UPDATE: 8-14-2014

Yet another re-review of Krugel's Georgetown Deli & Beer.

My last re-review was at the beginning of this year, but at the time of writing I had stopped going to Krugel’s for quite some time, so this newest re-review is probably closer to a years time since I actually patronized the place seeing as I had stopped going to Krugel’s all together ... but a friend of mine talked me into giving them another chance with tales of lower prices and more courteous service, so here we are!

First off I do have to say they have adjusted their prices quite a bit. Still not a home run pricing wise, but a lot of higher end/rarer bottles that were $8-10 over typical NEPA market value are now $2-4 over typical NEPA market value, which when you combine with their selection, is much easier to stomach and not nearly as egregious.

Service has adjusted much the same as their pricing .... not the end all be all of service (but that is few and far between in general in the industry) but Joe is quick to help and is very knowledgeable. The rest of the staff is quite young, as is their knowledge of high end beers, but is in no way off putting, and the last several times I have stopped in they were more that courteous.

The shop is well organized, clean and easy to navigate .... the only gripe, and quite a small one, I’d have about the store as a whole is all the price labels are on the underside of the bottles. And as a person who loves big beers that are typically bottle conditioned, having to turn the bottle sideways is not ideal.

Overall I’d have to say Krugel’s has seen and/or heard the issues people have had with their pricing, service, etc ... and are really putting forth and effort to alleviate these issues, most importantly get in line with pricing in and around the valley. As someone who wrote them off for good, as of recently, I have found myself stopping by a few times monthly ... and if things keep trending the way they are, I don’t see why that wouldn’t continue.

UPDATE: 2-15-2014

I'm Re-reviewing Krugel's Georgetown Deli & Beer almost two years to the date of my original review ... and oooohhh what a difference two years can make.

Service, while not overly stellar previously, is now abysmal. Condescending and rude a good bulk of the time.

Examples like:

::Being laughed at when asking about certain rare beers.

::Told "no" with an eye roll when asking about 4-pack pricing on beer's that were previously purchased from there in 4 packs for months.

::Multiple times wasn't given change on purchases that required a few pennies back. (I'm neither poor nor wealthy, but I at least expect change, not matter how little, from any purchases I make. At least give me the courtesy of saying "keep it")

For the most part their pricing is ridiculously high, it is in line with fine dining/bar prices and nowhere close to other to-go places in the area.

The only bright spot, if you are willing to look past all those glaring offenses, is that their selection is still good ... although it seems to be thinning as of late on the beers I seek.

As you can see from my original review of Krugels, I was all "all in" on their business and was willing to overlook the price gouging. But with more professional, courtesy, friendly and decently stocked to-go establishments pooping up in the area, I personally have been forced, by Krugel's Georgetown Deli & Beer themselves, to cut them off my list of places to willingly give my hard earned money.

Old Review: 04-12-2012

I live about five minutes from Krugels, so the distance combined with my love of good beer made this place opening a godsend.

I've been buying beer from here since it's inception and over all is has been a good experience, mostly due to the selection.

They are pretty overpriced (about two dollars more per high quality 4/6 pack) than other establishments, but with the selection they have I can overlook that price difference for the convenience of having "harder to finds" right in my back yard.

Joe the owner is very professional a knowledgeable, and is always quick stop say hi when I stop by. The rest of the staff is quite young, not as knowledgeable, but very nice.

Krugel's is sort of in an odd spot. As one of the only places offering this large of a selection in Northeast PA, it's hard to compare it to any other shop. While the service is hit or miss (normally not bad, it just is or isn't there), the store itself is fine. You probably won't find the rarest of the rare but they go where no other local store does.

Very good selection of brews, food is solid, prices are high. Service is hit and miss, sometimes it's great, others times you could be walking around for 20 minutes without anyone saying a word to you. One of the great things is growler fills, so few places in the area offer them, though they change tapped beer here a lot less than do at other places....

Made a day trip to PA strictly to go to this place. They had Cinnamon Roll'd Wake N Bake on tap. Not to mention they have one of those Nitro fill growler stations, which was a nice surprise to see. They had a huge selection. Some reviewers say nothing is priced, but every bottle I looked at had a sticker on the bottom. The biggest surprise of all was at the check out, when I looked up and saw 2 bottles of BCBBW staring at me. Over 2 months after they were released! They were a little pricey at 9$ a piece but I've seen multiple places here in NY selling them for that as well.

There is simply no better place to buy single or six pack beers anywhere within 100 miles. Prices could be better, but they claim to have 1100 beers and I don't doubt it for a second. This is THE place in northeast PA to buy craft beer, and I rarely come up with something they don't have in stock. There is an entire section dedicated to ech major beer style. They also do mixed six packs and have six beers on tap which rotate frequently for growler fills or if you want to enjoy the food (which I hear is great). Friday evenings they have a rep from some craft brew company giving out samples and sometimes glasses. If you're a beer lover and come to the Wilkes-Barre area, make sure to stop by.
