341ml bottle, a surprise find in the singles bin of a randomly accessed crappy local liquor store. 10 ratings here, and no reviews yet, WTF? Ok, Maritimers, Daddy's in town for the time being.
This beer pours a clear, bright pale copper amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves some splendid and awkwardly webbed lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.
It smells of sharp orange, white grapefruit, and lemon citrus rind, subtle earthy yeast, heady caramel malt, a further touch of toffee sweetness, a minor hard water flintiness, and peppy leafy, weedy, piney, and certainly perfumed floral hops. The taste is gritty bready caramel malt, still prevalent toffee pudding notes, an edgy blood orange, red grapefruit, and aged lemon fruitiness, and spicy, herbal, and piney hops.
The bubbles are actively engaging in their low-fi frothiness, the body a solid medium weight for the style, and not particularly smooth, but nor do I particularly care at the moment. It finishes well off-dry, that caramel/toffee malt damned if it's going to let those pesky hophead kids get away with their apparent misanthropy.
Wow, when I grabbed this one-off, I had no idea that I would be walking into such a dense jungle of American IPA goodness - big, juicy malt, varied, and interesting (somehow) bitter hops, and a hanging scepter of agreeably warming boozy booze. Yup, this is one innocuous, sneaky palate usurper, it is.
