Notes/Commercial Description:
Launched and enthusiastically received at the first annual Halifax Seaport Beer Fest in August 2007, this ale has quickly become known as the hoppiest beer in Atlantic Canada! Unfiltered Imperial I.P.A. is a robust, full-bodied and complex brew in the Double IPA style. An intensely fruity aroma combines nicely with a malty caramel backbone, clear hop bitterness and lingering citrusy finish. This beer is for the true hophead!

Tried several of these while on vacation in Canada in August 2012. I tried a red of theirs and then this, their flagship beer. After having quite a few tedious beers while on the trip, this one hit the mark and I believe I had 5 of them (they were 5 or 6 ouncers) while waiting for my wife for 90 minutes or so. This is a very good IPA that surprised me and made me happy waiting that day. Thanks, Garrison!

Garrison Imperial IPA
Poured a bright coppery gold colour, a bit of haze from being unfiltered. Nice white whispy lacing. 3.75
S – lots of juicy grapefruit, lemon, some crystal malt, florals come in, a big dose of cascade likely, some caramel sweetness, smooth and juicy hops profile. Inviting. 4
T – a citrusy, bitter start, grapefruit and orange rind, herbal hoppiness, really juicy, some astringent herbal bitterness, this one certainly has some biting bitterness which is nice. Malts hold up some bready and caramel notes but don’t really balance out the heavy hop load in this and it leave a slick oily bitterness. Finish is pleasant, some semisweet malts and citrus/floral notes. Overall this is a strong and rambunctious showcase of citrus hops, initially there is a lack of malt balance but when this develops the beer really comes into its own, some floral minerality, earthy notes, all ties together by a dry resiny finish. 4.25
M – moderate body with a full creamy, smooth carbonation, quite sessionable and in tune with this style, carries a heavy bittering load with a slick and dry finish that works quite well. 4
A little astringent but otherwise a very solid IIPA, thick malty profile loaded with cascade hops, oily and resinous in feel, quite nice all round. Still lacking to the best examples but a nice step up and I would surely consider getting this again. One of the better Canadian attempts at the style Ive sampled. 4

500 ml bottle purchased at LCBO for $4.10 CDN. Served fairly cold into a pint glass. Advertised as 8% ABV.

Appearance - Slight hazy copper / orange color. 2 Fingers of creamy white head with great retention and lacing. Clear and a some visible carbonation. One of the best looking IPA's I've had.

Smell - Pin, with a bit of lemon, but restrained in the citrusy smell. Definitely leans towards the piney aspect of IPA's as opposed to the citrusy side. Slight earthy undercurrent too.

Taste - More grapefruit and lemon here than expected, quite bitter; hopheads to enjoy. Also some big malts in play here that I haven't run across very often. There's also a orangy tangerine-esque citrus flavor running amok behind the scenes. Nice interplay between the two. Speaking from my limited experience I see this as a cross between Amsterdam Boneshaker and Founders Centennial IPA with Nova Scotia flair. All in all quite tasty.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, rich and full tasting with great crispness. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Really enjoyable IPA, that while coming with a steep price is one of the best beers I've had recently.

From the bottle to a tulip

A: orange/amber in color with somewhere between a one and two finger soapy head. The head breaks rather quickly leaving nice lacing and some islands of foam.

S: pine and citrus hops with a touch of malt sweetness there too.

T: follows the nose, with the malts playing a bigger role on the tail end. Really enjoyable.

M: good carbonation, medium body.

O: a nice IIPA. I enjoy these more than the usual IPA offerings as I find them a little more flavorful. Garrison does a good job with this beer, its fragrant, flavorful and easy to drink. I will look for more.

500 ml bottle from the New Minas NSLC.

A: amber and cloudy with about a finger of head.
S: Finally a Nova Scotia IPA that smells like an IPA! Citrusy hops.
T: Grassy, backed up by pale malts.
F: Medium/full-bodied.
O: This is a solid IPA, even if I would prefer the fruitier hop flavours of a West Coast IPA. I guess I'm now more of a Vancouverite than I am a Nova Scotian.

500 mL bottle picked up at the LCBO; bottled on Oct. 11 2013, listed at 8% and served slightly chilled. I'm glad to see that our benevolent monolithic government liquor agency has seen fit to import this quality Nova Scotian ale to Ontario annually. I had the pleasure of trying it once a few years ago, and although I didn't bother posting a review, I still enjoyed it immensely. Poured into a tulip.

Pours a beautiful, hazy orange-amber with a slight tinge of crimson. Atop the liquid is seated nearly two fingers of frothy, soapy, off-white head that slowly recedes into a denser cap. A doily pattern of lacing is left clinging to the glass - it's attractive, I'll give it that. The aroma draws me in as well, with plenty of the pine sap, pink grapefruit and orange pith notes that I love about American hops. A light caramel and biscuit sweetness is just barely detectable beneath the ocean of hops.

Very tasty stuff; the first sip makes me glad I decided to pick this up again. While the aforementioned caramel/biscuit malt backbone is detectable, this one is all about the hop bill. Grapefruit, orange peels and a wallop of pine resin dominate the flavour, with a bitter finish leading into a pithy, leafy, lingering aftertaste. The alcohol is well-hidden amongst the bitterness in the tail-end of the flavour profile, although after a glass of the stuff you'll know it's there. As it warms, the astringency weakens considerably, and this becomes a much more balanced-feeling brew. On the heftier side of medium-bodied, with a very smooth, almost creamy mouthfeel, and mild carbonation that lightly prickles the palate. About as drinkable as this style gets - too bad I didn't grab another bottle.

Final Grade: 4.36, an A grade. Garrison Imperial IPA is a superb sipper that I will assuredly return to again at some point, and quite possibly my favourite beer brewed east of Quebec. I will close this review by pointing out that I tend to avoid the boozier/prefer the lighter examples of this style (and at 8%, this qualifies as the latter) so this review should be considered within that context. Regardless, it's a great IPA that all BAs should try if given the opportunity.
