Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station in Kansas City. Poured into a small Belgian-style snifter glass.
Appearance - Body is a hazy, glowing tangelo orange color with not much variation in hue from shadow to light. Just a slight hint at a yellowish orange where the sunlight behind the glass comes through. Atop the Body sits a frothy orange cream colored head about a finger and a half thick. Retention is moderate, with it eventually fading to a thick ringlet and healthy foam across the surface of the liquid. There is a foamy ring of lace around the glass where the foam once was. Overall, quite a beautiful beer, especially given the lighting.
Smell - The mango is obvious, as it should be given the use of extract. It's almost too overpowering and bordering on artificial smelling, but only almost. It's got a nice, bright fruitiness to it, and while it sort of pushes the hops to the side, there are still some more hoppy-smelling tropical fruits and herbal notes to give it a little more fragrance. The malt profile is pretty hard to detect through the fruit sweetness.
Taste - Well, then. Given the decent smell, I expected nice flavor, but I'm thoroughly impressed by what they've achieved here. The artificial impression I got from the aroma has gone by the wayside and in it's place is a luscious bouquet of mango and passionfruit, with some herbs and pine from the hop profile to prevent it from going overboard. It really tastes like a fresh fruit, but without any of the cloying sweetness that I usually associate with mango juice. Some notes of tangerine are also present to add to the taste.
Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and moderate carbonation, with a very juicy feel and a predominantly dry finish, with just a kiss of sweetness to keep it refreshing.
Overall, this is probably the best beer I've had from Empryean and I wish they would start producing this one year-round. Honestly, it's up there with other fruit-infused IIPAs I've had in terms of taste, and as noted before, it's quite an attractive beer. Some minor adjustments to make the smell seem a little more natural would help it go a long way.
