This is not what I was expecting. Drake's is located underneath the shadow of a condominium far away from the bar scene, in a residential neighborhood. I thought I had walked into the wrong neighborhood...until I heard the noise of people drinking at what looked like a private pool party. Keep on walking along the gate, find an opening, and walk on into the party...what do you know, welcome to Drake's.

The tables and bar sit above what looks like a shallow pool of water, which glows green at night. You feel like you're on a boat's deck, but with modern conveniances. There's a space towards the back which is rich in fauna where one can hang out at and relax if one is aquaphobic. Great atmoshphere, it had an open air feeling to it with a small cover over the bar and table area. The people drinking there also created a good vibe in the air for me.

There are seven drafts at the bar, with the most noteworthy being a house-brewed IPA (made by Microcervejaria Nacional FT). The bottle list is long and distinctive, over 120, and 2/3's of them being Belgian. I noticed Tilburgs, Mardesous, Blanche de Bruxelles, Scotch Silly, Gulden Draak, La Chouffe, Hoegaarden Grand Cru, Achel...man lots of Belgian beers in the bottle! And high quality ones too. The pouring was great, my Hoegaarden Grand Cru was swirled in the bottle after two-thirds was poured out by my server. Beers weren't served ice cold, glassware matched the beer...if they were pouring their Guinness properly I would give it a 5. It takes a little bit of attention of get service, but the bartenders were already dealing with a lot of clients. Oh and be aware that this place is expensive. Everything here is going to cost you more than other places. R$10 Eisenbahn longnecks? At least the beers offered were great.

Drake's Bar & Deck wound up being one of my favorite spots in São Paulo. The combination of ambience, quality pouring, and selection of Belgians makes this place worth a visit.
