This is one of the first brewpubs in the New River Valley. Even though it has a Radford address, it is actually in the Pulaski County community of Fairlawn. The bar is built like a lodge with a nice view of the New River, and is very clean and inviting, if not a bit fancy. The beer is always top notch for a brewpub. Your glass will never run dry, the service here is wonderful, both in the bar and in the restaurant. They have a full line of beer and very good seasonals. The food is to die for, some of the best in the NRV, the dry rub is very good. The only real downfall is that it is a bit pricier than most places to go here, but they have $2 pints on Mondays and everyday Happy Hour, so you can save some, but the food is quite pricey. Overall, I recommend making this a stop if you are in the area.

The atmosphere of this place is inescapable even before you walk in the door. The post and beam construction visible from the parking lot is just a primer for the warm and cozy feeling you get when you come to the front table. A bar on the left with a granite top overlooking the brewery below, offers a great sitting place to enjoy one of the breweries great offerings.
I would highly recommend the onion rings with are battered in a beer batter made with the brewery's own hefeweizen. I've yet to taste any of the dry aged steaks however the wet aged steaks are delicious. The great service is just icing on the cake for this beer lover, who always enjoys drinking a beer within earshot of where it is brewed.

Took a drive down a dark back road outside of Blacksburg, looking for some good beer and tasty house aged steak. Got one out of two.
River Company is housed in a great looking oversized log cabin-style building. Nice looking inside too with an open ceiling and exposed beams. Plenty of tables filled with business travelers from the look of it. We sat at the small bar to the left of the entrance.
The house beer was nice. Eight taps ranging from quite good (the pale was really tasty with lots of amarillo hops, the IPA had an interesting leathery aroma and the porter was chocolaty and smooth) to decent (hefeweizen and cream lager) to odd (an apple brown ale that tasted *exactly* like Apple Jacks cereal).
I would have enjoyed a full pint of one or two of these had our bartender not vanished for long stretches to wait on tables. We would have stuck it out if the meal was enjoyable but no such luck. Our steak was bland and pale (crank up the heat on the grill guys!), the mashed potatoes gummy and the slaw decent though oddly chopped into chunks.
Maybe we caught this place on a bad night but I am unlikely to give it another shot.
Oh, yeah, I did knock the quality down from 4.0 due to the presence of bottled BMC products on the beer list. Sorry...
