- Appearance -
deep amber in color at around 15 SRM, lively carbonation, poured with a two finger head which allowed for decent head retention, and served in a shaker pint glass
- Smell -
pervasive brewing wort smell on head and throughout, with faint hop fragrance occasionally
The whole restaurant smells like a brewing kitchen, so we ate outside. The wort fragrance found its way outside with this beer though! (However, for comparison, the Berliner Weiss had much less of the pervasive wort fragrance on its head.) Their website says that this beer was brewed on July 15, 2014, so that may have had something to do with the smell. It's an interesting smell for sure, but it is not my favorite fragrance and definitely detracts from the tasting experience.
- Taste -
The hop character is very subdued but present. The dominant flavor is a well rounded malty flavor that sits well on the tongue with consistent carbonation that offers a refreshing bite. The flavors come on strong, though without tasting very alcoholic, and drop off gradually, leaving a pleasant and slightly hoppy taste.
Consistent with Beer Advocate reviews of other IPAs from Freetail, this IPA tastes more like a malty session beer. At first taste, the unexpected malty dominance combined with the pungent wort-smelling head produced a peanut flavor for me.
- Mouthfeel -
medium body, and smooth mouthfeel overall with consistent carbonation on the tongue to offer a refreshing bite
- Overall -
This is definitely a surprisingly non-IPA-tasting IPA but is still mostly enjoyable.
The atmosphere of the brew house's patio contributes to a cozy Texas Hill Country feeling:
-medium volume alt rock music played inside a sports-bar-like atmosphere with many TVS
-low volume alt rock music played on our secluded shaded patio, where we dined alone until one customer arrived as we were leaving
-views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country on the outskirts of San Antonio including Six Flags Fiesta Texas
-dog friendly patio with a young lady and her adorable puppy arriving just as we left
-quite the variety of delicious food, including some of the best pizza in San Antonio -
We shared a five cheese pizza with chicken and basil added. Yum!
