Sampled on tap at the Freetail-Real Ale barrel-aged festival in San Antonio.

The beer pours a black color with a tan head. The aroma is heavy on the smoke with some roasted malt mixed in. The flavor is heavy smoke, chocolate and roasted malt. Thick mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Very good, but I think the smoke overpowered any of the more subtle flavors that may have been in the beer. Still, glad I got to try this one.

Courtesy of the Tx Gang Bang BIF Crew. This is a 2010 bottle

The beer is pitch black with a mocha colored head that is finely knit. The beer smeels of burnt sugar, charred oak and a smokehouse. The beer has great mouthfeel: soft and luscious. Slightly sweet, but lots of dark roast flavors, bitter chocolate, and smoky coffee. The aftertaste is long with some astrigency acrid roasted malt. Overall, a pretty good beer.

Review #200 and a HUGE thanks to pwsoldier for hooking this up! Khaki waxed bomber served in a red wine glass at the local BYOB.

Pours a dark brown, not quite black, with a medium head.

Smells like roast, chocolate, smoky campfire, bacon and burnt toast.

Taste is also smokey with notes of chocolate, toffee, brown sugar and dark fruit. The heavy smoke element is a little off-putting.

Mouthfeel is thin with medium carbonation. Very smooth but not thick and chewy like I prefer my RIS. Overall, a good attempt at the style but I'm not enamored with this like I hoped I'd be. Hopefully my other bottle will undergo a nice transformation in a year's time.

Bottle shared by Grant - much obliged! Bottle 103 of 406 (unsure of that last number).

Pours black with a half-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing and decent legs.

Smells of sweet molasses, roasted malts, and smooth dark chocolate, in that order. Also present are very slight amounts of char.

Tastes similar to how it smells, but less restrained. Large roasted malt and dark molasses flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by moderate amounts of dark chocolate. Midway through the sip hints of syrupy dark fruit flavors make a brief appearance before fading into a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a heavy thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I've been wanting to try this beer for a good while now and it didn't disappoint. Certainly on the more decadent and sweeter side of RIS's and one of the better ones I've had that didn't involve a barrel. Well worth a shot if you can track one down.

Review from notes.

A: Pours a dark brown with a one inch brown head on top. Nice retention, but minimal lacing.

S: Extremely smoky aroma with some charred malt, and little bit of meat/bacon. Some hints of chocolate as well. The smoke is a little too heavy for me.

T: The smoke is not as heavy as the aroma, which is a good thing here. It is mixed in with some heavily roasted malt, chocolate, and some dark fruit.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: A little too smoky for my taste, especially in the aroma.

Thanks to Speedwayjim for this long time want! 2010, bottle 251/450

A: Deep black and slightly viscous. Graham cracker colored head.

S: Heavy chocolatey overtones with smoke and rich molasses underneath. No noticeable alcohol.

T: More chocolate and black strap molasses, subtle anise, and brown sugar. Well integrated hops, showing a sappy bitterness. Some hints of oxidation.

M: Lightly heavy, if you'll permit me saying so. Carbonation is a touch high and detracts a tad from the overall experience.

O: A flavorful stout, heavy on molasses notes. Quite rich but falls a hair short in overall balance.

Very smooth drinker. Average mouthfeel but dangerous drinker. Great flavours cover the booziness. Brown coloured body with a creamy foam. Complex, with smoke the pleasant hook in the smell and in the taste, leaving a velvet chocolate finish. Great beer in a great style, this one is a meal in itself.

Thanks to HopsSchnapps for this one. 2010 vintage. #247/450. Poured into a Darkness snifter.

A: Standard pour yields a 1 finger dense, dark mocha head with decent retention. Beer is an opaque black. Lacing is spotty and sparse with little cling. Average.

S: Nose is very unique. Smokey maple bacon, chocolate, roasted malt bitterness, and some brownie. Booziness is very apparent. Not very subtle.

T: Opens sweet molasses, prunes, raisins, and other smoked dark fruit. Roasted malt presence is very apparent throughout, but exerts a smoky presence rather than a bitterness. Chocolate and some sweet bozziness towards the middle and end. Brownie and logan at the finish with a brief, molasses aftertaste. Interesting with some unique fruit notes.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Oily and smooth in the mouth though a bit thin at times. Goes down with some bubbles and a touch of heat. Finish is messy with a nice, brief aftertaste. Solid.

O: A very solid offering from La Muerta, I'd be really interested in trying the Bourbon Barrel version of this one. There's a weird fruit and smoky flavor in this one that I can't quite place my finger on, but its not unpleasant. An interesting beer that's rather easy to appreciate.

On tap at RealTail fest at Freetail brewpub. Poured into a snifter.

A: Dark thick black with thin mocha head. No lacing and head is very thin.

S: Vanilla, smoke, dark chocolate, and molasses.

T: Dark chocolate, molasses and smoke. Some faint vanilla on the finish. Kind of hot.

M: Thin but coats the tongue well enough. High carbonation.

D: Pretty good Impy but kind of hot. More age would do this beer good.
