Been waiting for awhile to get a chance to try the "number one rated brew pub" in Texas's beer.

A: A deep golden yellow body that is slightly opaque, topped off with a one finger off white head that dissapates quickly and exibited no lacing.

S: Smell of honey is largly present mixed in with a bit of citrus and sugar. I also detected hints of floral and notes of spice.

T: Sweet beginning from those malts, hops due shine through farely quickly with a surprising spicy bitter aftertaste.

M: Typical tingles from the medium carbonation.

O: I was really excited for my first beer from Freetail and after hearing/reading such good things this beer kinda let me down. This is a good, but by no means great brew that is worth a try even if only once.

On draft at the brewpub in San Antonio.

Pours a slightly hazy dark golden yellow color with pale yellow hues when held to a light source and a two finger frothy white head that slowly fades to a lasting cap. Chunks of soapy lacing left behind.

Estery light frut aroma with subtle malt resence and sweet alcohol. Floral and perfmuny with hints of apricot and peppery spice.

Medium bodied and sweet with a prominent estery light fruit character along with some peppery spice, subtle hops and sweet alcohol. Hints of apple, apricot and orange with a slightly buttery malt presence. The sweetness makes it a but more quaffable but there is a bit too much alcohol heat for my liking.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a hazy light orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, and grassy aromas. Taste is much the same with fruit and grassy flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is easy to drink but nothing too special.

On tap at Freetail 12 oz. $6.50 goblet 6.8.12.

Deep gold body chill haze thin broken layer of head. Big waft of orange peel in the nose a bit of cardamon no discernible hop aroma a bit floral if anything. Taste is a bit on the sweet side wee spice . Mouthfeel medium finish dry but a bit sticky. Needed more spice to offset the sweetness. Note thid batch ABV listed ad 8.5%.

Served in a snifter glass a glowing orange hue with a fair amount of haziness. Tough to comment on the foam as it was brought pretty damn full.

Nose is creamy honey-butter with some green apple and apricot. Lightly malted, so the fruitiness really stands out and even has some Sweetart candy aromas. Some citrus tangerine is in there as well as some doughy bread.

Tastes a bit like an alcoholic fruit smoothie. Maybe some high fermentation temps were used here to create a plethora of fruity yeast esters. The low amount of specialty malts are evident here as the heavy alcohol is tough to hide. Not that I mind a nice warming alcohol presence, but this seems a bit rough around the edges. Spicy black peppercorn flavors only accentuate the heat. Overall, it is still a tasty sipper, but I think it would be much better aged for a year-ish...it's drinking a bit hot right now.

A - Pours cloudy copper with a rich off-white head that shows great retention. Lacing is moderate.

S - The aroma is filled with an enticing mixture of floral, sugary, and fruity notes. Green apple, white grape, and a hint of lemon make for a very complex nose. Some alcohol is present as well.

T - A kiss of hop bitterness up front quickly gives way to a sugary/malty sweetness. White grape, sweet apple, and a bit of cherry are met by honey and alcohol to create a flavor profile that is predominantly sweet without being too overbearing.

M - Full-bodied with a thick, creamy finish.

D - Abv is definitely noticeable, and the sweetness gets old after a while. This is a good beer overall, but I think I'm going to pass on the 750 ml bottles in the future and just enjoy the 12 oz. servings on tap.

4 oz. sample at the Freetail Brewpub outside of San Antonio.

3Tail pours an attractive, lemon-blond hue with a fair level of haze. The off-white head retains well, and rises effortlessly upon a quick swirl of the sample glass. Great aroma to this beer, nailing the Belgian qualities of fruity yeast esters (mango, papaya) and lemon zest. Floral hops and biscuity malts add a nice balance, while the booziness lurks in the background.

The beginning of the sip starts out with an unsuspecting sweetness of Belgian malts, spice, and yeast. Then comes the alcohol, laying a thick kiss of warming booze across the back of the palate while the hops add a dash of bitterness. Truly a complex beast! Mouthfeel is chewy and slightly viscous, with a nicely carbonated body that finishes on the dry side. Overall, a BIG beer that's full of complexity, but the 4oz sample was almost over-bearing. I love my big Belgian beers, but I doubt I could make it through more than a pint of this one.

In a trade awhile back from jefferz5000.
Corked and caged 750 into 6oz wine glass split 3ways.

Darker than golden, closer to orange pour, burnt colors, uneven or feathered in the glass with an offwhite head.

Aroma of roast malt, fruit, burnt tangerine and yeast. There is good deal of booze in the nose and it is more evident in the taste.

Malt forward flavor, but complex and full flavor with the yeast and fruit notes well blanced. I found the carbonation to be mild and the mouthfeel to be lighter than I was expecting for the style. While I felt it was a bit maltier than anything else, there really are very nice fruit flavors and a good bit of booth boozyness and alcohol bite.

I found this to be greater than the sum of the parts. Certainly an enjoyable brew but one that lets you know exactly how stong an ale you're enjoying.

Sampled at the Freetail and Real Ale barrel-aged festival.

The beer pours a light orange color with a white head. The aroma is citrus, grain and some Belgian candi sugar. The flavor is alcohol, sugar, orange, cherry, grain and some spices. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
