From a month-old growler kept in the back of the fridge. It kept itself pretty good...

A sturdy pour into a pint glass brings forth a couple fingers of foamy tan head with moderate retention. Perfectly clear ruby brown. A few straggling lines of lace. Aroma is sweet malts, doughy bread and dark brown sugar, quickly overtaken with a spicy hop kick. Flavor brings the malt forward, with less hops flavor but still a big bitter kick. As the pint goes on, the bitterness lingers long enough to undermine the malt body in the next sip. At first the carbonation was a bit much, but it's calmed down.

Looking for a classic doppelbock, keep looking. This is an aggressively hopped version which works well in the aroma but gets too off-track in the flavor.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper color with a very nice head (a feature of every Freetail beer I have sampled) that leaves several strands of lacing

Smell: There is a base of toffee malts lingering underneath but the pithy floral hops hijack the aromatics

Taste: Even moreso than with the aroma, the toffee malts really get pushed to the rear; while there is a malty sweetness from start to finish, the pithy grapefruit takes over throughout

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: WIth all the hops, it is hard to think of this as a doppelbock, though the Munich and Vienna malts are appropriate for the style; I am really enjoying this and think this is every bit the equivalent of some of the hoppy lagers that are being brewed by Jack's Abby

Thanks, jl28r1, for the opportunity

Thanks to channels321 for this extra in a recent trade of ours.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into my La Fin du Monde tulip glass.

A: Pours a hazy burnt orange with an aggressive 3 inch billowy white head. Good lacing left as I drank my way through this dopplebock.

S: Some malt but dominated by a rich toffee aromas and just toward the end some booziness.

T: Sweet Breadiness, some Toffee as in the nose, a gentle sweetness from front to back with just a bit of alcohol bite in the end that was very nice. Other reviews talk about a hoppiness taking over in the back-end but I did not find this nor was it missed.

M: Nice medium mouth feel that coated the tongue with sweetness and was very drinkable.

O: Really enjoyed this beer and would certainly like to drink it again when I am in the mood for that style.
