awesome take on a kriek here, different than many, this one done in red wine barrels, something light, maybe pinot noir. the color really throws me off, hardly pink at all, let alone deep red like some can be. from a visual standpoint, i would never know this is a fruited beer, barely a hint of pink to it. good head and some haze. the nose is real tart, lactobacillus and wine tannins. some oak and some thin wheat malt, but the tartness is what gets me. cherry is subtle here too. more robust in the flavor, especially int he finish. black cherry, sweet and fibrous and super ripe. a lovely accent to the wheat malt base. tartness never quite turns to sourness. there is a pucker to it, but not a sustaining dry acidity. its more drinkable as a result, and the popping carbonation makes it rather refreshing. neat to see the effect of the wine barrel on it, lots of fruity grape character, and the earthy richness of the oak. i think its a nice touch, and surprised we havent seen more krieks finished this way. have not had much from freetail, but this is awfully promising stuff. 2013 vintage.
