I love this brewpub. It has been a long time coming for me to make a visit. I have had several beers through trades and growlers from friends, so I already knew the beer was top notch.

A large room opens up as you walk in. Lots of tables scattered about with some TV's turned to sports (with the volume off). The bar is towards the back and zig zags a little. There is a chalkboard above with what is new, and the brewing equipment is visible behind that. A concrete patio is outside. Relaxed, but the building is a little sterile.

The service is excellent. I was able to meet Scott and Jason for the Old Bat Rastard release. They are great and very welcoming. The other bartenders are great as well. They know just as much about the beer as the brewers. They put up with all the crazy BAs and did not mess any tabs up. Oh ya, they are fast with your order to boot.

The food is good. I had some appetizers and a pizza. Both good, nothing outstanding though.

Now, THE BEER! Lots of stuff on tap, and everything exciting and unique. Lots of big beers for the geeks in everyone, Hopothesis A., BA Old Bat Rastard, and BA La Muerta was on tap when I visited. The Morning Wit and Freetail Ale for the non big beer lovers. Tons of other unique offerings. I love it.

Quality wise, I have never had a problem with the taps. Always fresh and rotating. Though I have had issues with some of their bottles they release. Infected or just plan off bottles for what ever reason.

Overall, an excellent beer nerd paradise. They have an ever changing tap list and bottle releases. What more does anyone want? One of my favorite brewpubs.

Before driving to Austin and leaving San Antonio, I took the wife to Freetail Brewing.

Driving there is no joke- miles and miles of northbound freeway to a point where you are still within city limits but it feels like a subdivision in the middle of nowhere. The space is large and standard, nothing terribly unique but comfortable and functional.

I spotted 19 taps all around, including 15 Freetail and 4 guest taps from Texas. Of the house beers, I tried, in a 5-oz flight of 4 brews, the Old Bat Rastard (winter warmer), Hopothosis (DIPA), Thanatos (7.2% stout) and FT2 Witicus (sort of an imperial wheat). All of them were OK but a little underwhelming aka average. I wouldn’t rush to fill a growler here… although I did like the La Muerta imperial stout I had on tap at Friendly Spot.

I had read about the Freetail pizza and was curious (and hungry!). But both the wife and I were left a little cold… the size is good and the crust is thin, but it lacked flavor all around, from dough to toppings. Not even hot sauce and cheese could save it from blandness. The cheesy bread appetizer was simple and yummy, though.

Service was pretty friendly and prices are not terrible ($18 for a massive pizza). It was a good stop for us and I’m glad I tried Freetail, but I don’t think I will revisit.

Attended for La Muerta release. Did a sampler and beers were good, but not as great as I had hoped. Not as congested as expected either, venue as attached to a mall with plenty of outdoor seating. Service was good and prices reasonable. Will probably go back on a slower day.
