Took a long bus ride up here during a recent trip to San Antonio.

Atmosphere is good. It's kind of strip-mall-ish from the outside but once inside it opens up nicely. There's outside seating at a large window opening up to the bar and plenty of inside seating in a fairly large space. The bar is at the back in an L-shape with the brewing equipment visible behind. La Muerta and Dirty Rat Bastard paraphernalia hang all over the place. A few TV's dot the space above the bar.

Quality is good. Now that I think about it all my beers came in large pint glasses but they were all at the proper temperature with proper amounts of head.

Service was very good. I never had to wait long to get refills and the gentleman behind the bar did his best (and a pretty nice job) of answering my random questions.

Selection was very good for a brewpub. A myriad of styles was available along with random treatments of the styles (cherries added to a stout, spirulina added to a wit, peppers added to a BSDA). I was told they normally had a guest tap but the tap was broken when I was in.

Food was good. I had the basic margherita pizza and it was better than expected. I can't speak to any other items but if they're as good as the pizza you'll enjoy it.

Value is good. I went on their pint night so the beer was exceptionally cheap but even the normal prices were reasonable.

Overall I was expecting big things before arriving, lowered my expectations at the door, and then saw them raised as I stepped inside. It's not in the most enchanting location but it more than makes up for it with what's inside. Well worth a stop if you're in the area. (1,638 characters)

Great beers, especially the various 'Wit' beers. Food at the north (pub) location is very good. Food truck at the production facility (south) is excellent (Mr. Fish'. Taco Truck). (179 characters)

Great option on the outskirts of San Antonio. Active vibe, lots of TVs to catch sporting events, and plenty of room to get comfortable. Wide ranging variety on top, with make your own 4 beer samplers. Pretty extensive menu as well with one highlight being the hot pretzels. Definitely worth a trip. (298 characters)

I didn't try the food though I've heard it's great. Just came in and got two flights of beers.

They seem to like wit beers and had at least four on tap when I was there. A spirulina wit stood out on the menu but it's not too remarkable to drink. The Witicus is the beer geek's best bet of the wit beers.

On the other spectrum they had a black IPA, a Belgian and Imperial Stout and an American Wild Ale that all appealed to me on the menu. They represented a good mix of styles and offered different flavor profiles that I like when visiting a brewery (I like variety).

I must say they're Endymion is an exceptional brew and reminded me a bit of The Dissident or La Folie, both exceptional beers that I love. Unfortunately it wasn't available for growler fills.

The service was friendly and helpful, although you can tell they get a lot of inexperienced beer drinkers in there, so you'll get warnings like "It's sour," which are kinda funny.

Lastly, the outdoor area here is nice, but the indoor area does feel a bit like a dark, trashy college bar. Maybe it's meant to suggest a cave (for the freetail bats) but either way, it's not exactly appealing.

Also, the location along the highway in a stripmall kind of setting isn't much to write home about either. (1,269 characters)

Before driving to Austin and leaving San Antonio, I took the wife to Freetail Brewing.

Driving there is no joke- miles and miles of northbound freeway to a point where you are still within city limits but it feels like a subdivision in the middle of nowhere. The space is large and standard, nothing terribly unique but comfortable and functional.

I spotted 19 taps all around, including 15 Freetail and 4 guest taps from Texas. Of the house beers, I tried, in a 5-oz flight of 4 brews, the Old Bat Rastard (winter warmer), Hopothosis (DIPA), Thanatos (7.2% stout) and FT2 Witicus (sort of an imperial wheat). All of them were OK but a little underwhelming aka average. I wouldn’t rush to fill a growler here… although I did like the La Muerta imperial stout I had on tap at Friendly Spot.

I had read about the Freetail pizza and was curious (and hungry!). But both the wife and I were left a little cold… the size is good and the crust is thin, but it lacked flavor all around, from dough to toppings. Not even hot sauce and cheese could save it from blandness. The cheesy bread appetizer was simple and yummy, though.

Service was pretty friendly and prices are not terrible ($18 for a massive pizza). It was a good stop for us and I’m glad I tried Freetail, but I don’t think I will revisit. (1,310 characters)

Attended for La Muerta release. Did a sampler and beers were good, but not as great as I had hoped. Not as congested as expected either, venue as attached to a mall with plenty of outdoor seating. Service was good and prices reasonable. Will probably go back on a slower day. (279 characters)
