Swung by this awesome, burgeoning brewpub after a gorgeous Sunday in San Antonio with the fam.

Despite the "corporate plaza" feel to the surrounding area, Freetail keeps a rustic vibe with a huge windmill off its porch. Inside, high ceilings and a long bar surround a pretty good-sized seating area surrounded by flat-screens (sports on all channels) and a few arcade/dart games. Don't get it twisted, this is not a sports bar! On-tap is one of the finest assortments of Texas microbrews I've ever encountered. Not extensive, but very nicely selected, with beer from Real Ale, (512), Alamo Brewing, Rahr & Sons, and more. Did I mention their own Freetail brews on-tap? They had about 6, and all were fantastic. Still, I was heartbroken when I found out they had no more La Muerta, Rye Wit, or Bat Rastard left :(

Service was excellent, even though the place wasn't all that crowded. Our waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the beers she was serving. We ordered a large pizza of the mushroom variety---good, but nothing exceptional. Nevertheless, the menu choices were beyond your typical pub fare and showed a good level of creativity. Very reasonable prices, and on Sunday they have $2 off their growler fills. I ran off with a jug of their Freetail Ale. I recommend it, their IPA, and their Exxxtra Pale Ale. Will be returning once La Muerta is brewed again....

Wide open floor, shockingly insane number of HDTVs and even a projector screen. The sound is cranked to 11 on just about every sporting event you can think of. You'd think this was a sports bar first and foremost, except it's a brewpub, and, you can hear the games better than you would a sports bar--is it a plus or a minus? I'll let you decide.

Tap list is a good large selection of their own brews, plus a few other guest taps, which are mostly other locals. A good number of sours are featured, which is what I went for and I was not disappointed. There were also some risky IPA experiments, and some standard darker beers were available as well.

They also have a decent food selection, including some features for the cool wood fired oven, such as pizza and other yummies flying out in quick succession. If you're not familiar with the area, and the loop around San Antonio, it's a little confusing to get to, even for a good GPS. Otherwise, good location, interesting brews, if not a little overboard on the sports TV offerings.

While I'm not impressed with the basic interior or the sound of the room (lots of hard surfaces) at Freetail, it's OK. I'd rather sit outside though. I appreciate that they get a college crowd, and that they support that, and that's what the interior and decor seem to be designed for. I'm not against it, I just want you to know what to expect. The big parking lot is a bonus.

They do have some pretty decent pizza though, and let's face it, we're going for the beer. At least the beers you can't get somewhere else pretty readily. I've found the bar staff to be quite good, well above average, and that makes a difference to me. But again, back to the beer, that's what seals the deal for me: 15 on tap with 4 guests to boot... not bad, and more than half of those are rotating or one-off specialties. Worth a trip.

Great environment, nice atmosphere with the people, and decent view of the hillside it resides on. Heard it was more beautiful before they built the houses surrounding the hills but nonetheless very nice scenery to enjoy a cold craft brew. Staff very knowledgeable of their beer selection so very helpful in deciding what beers to have. Overall great experience.

Vibe - Nice place to go. Usually always packed and has a really good following. Lots of tv's
Quality - I'm a little less impressed with the majority of their beers than many people seem to be. Some of their limited release stuff is very good, but the majority of the what they have on their 16 taps at any given time I find just to be average.
Service - Service seems to be hit and miss. Sometimes I have great service, other times it seems the bartenders couldn't care less if I'm there or not. That's why I rated a 3.5 for service. I will say the past two times I've been, the service has been really good.
Selection - 16 beers on taps and several guest taps.
Pizza is excellent and what keeps me coming back. Highly recommend getting it.

Great beers, especially the various 'Wit' beers. Food at the north (pub) location is very good. Food truck at the production facility (south) is excellent (Mr. Fish'. Taco Truck).

Great option on the outskirts of San Antonio. Active vibe, lots of TVs to catch sporting events, and plenty of room to get comfortable. Wide ranging variety on top, with make your own 4 beer samplers. Pretty extensive menu as well with one highlight being the hot pretzels. Definitely worth a trip.

I didn't try the food though I've heard it's great. Just came in and got two flights of beers.

They seem to like wit beers and had at least four on tap when I was there. A spirulina wit stood out on the menu but it's not too remarkable to drink. The Witicus is the beer geek's best bet of the wit beers.

On the other spectrum they had a black IPA, a Belgian and Imperial Stout and an American Wild Ale that all appealed to me on the menu. They represented a good mix of styles and offered different flavor profiles that I like when visiting a brewery (I like variety).

I must say they're Endymion is an exceptional brew and reminded me a bit of The Dissident or La Folie, both exceptional beers that I love. Unfortunately it wasn't available for growler fills.

The service was friendly and helpful, although you can tell they get a lot of inexperienced beer drinkers in there, so you'll get warnings like "It's sour," which are kinda funny.

Lastly, the outdoor area here is nice, but the indoor area does feel a bit like a dark, trashy college bar. Maybe it's meant to suggest a cave (for the freetail bats) but either way, it's not exactly appealing.

Also, the location along the highway in a stripmall kind of setting isn't much to write home about either.
