NOLA Brewing Smokey Mary
Appearance: orangish amber, good lacing, and a small head.
Smell: very nice sweet caramel apple.
Taste: caramel apple smokiness.
Mouthfeel: medium and smooth.
This is a very nice smoke beer. The smoke is not over bearing like some smoke beers I've had. It is nice and smooth.

Had a pint a NY Pizza on Magazine St. in New Orleans. I had the odd urge to eat this beer, the mix of spice and smoke with toasty malt and caramel reminds me of food. Or at least it'd make a great pairing with anything spicy. This is surprisingly complex for an amber, or smoked ale, with a great balance between the smoke and malt. Find this beer.

I'm not a fan of smoked beers, no I am not. However, I will try anything from NOLA brewing, since I live about five blocks from the brewery. Smoky Mary has made me a believer in the power of smoked beers. I find myself craving it.
Beautiful golden-brown color, with a pale beige head.
The base is a fest style-ale, with a hint of smoked malt. You don't get much smoke on the aroma, but it's there on the palate, and it's nicely balanced against the festy maltiness. That's the main thing I like about this beer: the balance. A lot of smoked beers blow out your palate after a couple of sips, but this is one that you can settle down with for a night or two.
Outstanding with a burger.

Poured from tap into pint glass at Bulldog Midcity. Pours a slight brown color with slight foamy head. Some smokey/bacon aromas, with sweet malts. Taste is really nice smokey and bacon, mixed with great sweet malts. It super well balanced and not so harsh. Maybe my fav smoked brew I ever had...and I usually dont like smoked brews. Overall, nice brew and great Rauch brew...

Poured into a pint glass a slightly hazy light copper color with a thin off-white head.
The beer has a slight smokey arOma, but is backed by a sweet crystal malt backbone.
The taste is similar to the smell, a sweet malty backbone with a hint of smoky flavor.
Smoky Mary isn't a terribly complicated brew, but is definitely a solid offering from NOLA.

Poured a pale golden color with a creamy white head, good retention and nice lacing.
The aroma was of toast, caramel and very subtle smoke. Low grassy hops in the back.
Light, crisp, and clean malts with bread, toast and caramel with a slight smoky finish.
Creamy, and dry finish.
Nice, but too subtle to call it smoked.

Appearance: Had this on tap at the brewery. Poured a nice golden amber with little to no head. Lacing present throughout however.
Smell: Nice aroma of toasted bread, caramel and an ever so subtle smell of smoke.
Taste: Nice malty sweetness which is balanced perfectly with a slight smokiness. Didn't really detect a whole lot of hop bitterness. Maybe a slight hoppiness but your mouth is drawn to the smokiness of the beer more than anything. A lot of "smoked" beers are just too much. Thankfully this one is not assertive and is an easily drinkable "smoked" beer. It's like they smoked an Oktoberfest style beer only it's an ale not a lager. Confused? Me too. Either way it's a tasty brew.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with medium carbonation.
Overall: Once again NOLA Brewing continues to amaze with their specialty beers. Would love to see this one in 22oz bottles!

Consumed May 2nd, 2012 at Woodshed Grill & Brewpub.
Beer is a clear coppery caramel color with virtually no head.
Aroma is virtually nonexistent; there is a hint of caramel and nothing else.
Beer is light on flavor; sort of a watered-down brown ale (slight nuttiness and smooth crystal malt) with a little carbonation bite. Smoke taste appears only fleetingly on the finish. Very low bitterness.
This beer is smooth and easy to drink; it's not much of a rauchbier, but it's ok for what it is.

On tap at Walk Ons in Lafayette, LA.
A: Pours a slightly hazy copper/orange color. A bubbly white head forms, but recedes in a second. Light lace is left behind.
S: Toasted malt with a light caramel sweetness. Smoke is very apparent, but is never over barring. Very nice.
T: Toasted malt, caramel, smoke all intermingle. Smoked meat, wood. Just incredibly balanced. Everything seems to compliment each other perfectly.
M/D: A medium body and carbonation. Impressively, silky smooth. The ultra smoothness and incredible balance makes this a treat to drink.
I am not a fan of Rauchbiers but this is excellent. Plenty of smoke, but incredible balance. Well done and highly recommended.
