It's a refreshing change of pace to find a brewpub specializing in casual Mediterranean cuisine. A quick survey of The Blue House Café's menu serves as a reminder of the delectable food items too often absent from American bars: gyros, couscous, stuffed grape leaves, flatbread platters, and Mediterranean salads served with warm pita bread. And for dessert, a pastry case awaits you filled with baklava, éclairs and more.
It almost seems odd that this quaint, rural café run by Armenian immigrants also produces its own beers. The tiny 2-bbl brew house behind the kitchen was crafted locally by metal fabricators in Vernonia. Only four taps are provided with an emphasis on modest session ales. No guest taps, nitro, or cask ales are available though the House offers a thoughtful selection of wine. Beers are served in handled mason jars that may be capped and purchased to go.
The Blue House first opened a few miles north of town but relocated in the spring of '09 to its present location in downtown Vernonia. The building originally served as a bank and still contains a vault dating to the 1920s, now used to store brewing malts. Colorful attention to details and locally produced artwork create a relaxed vibe with a comfortable, small town feel. The adjoining courtyard hosts a farmers market on Friday afternoons in summer.
Though Vernonia is off the beaten track for most of us, one whiff of the intoxicating aromas of this Mediterranean (not Greek) café is enough to assure the worthiness of a visit. Recommended.
