Served On-Tap

Chuckanut Märzen is one of my favorites, smoke beers are hit or miss for me, but I still expect big things from this one.

A — Pours a nice clear dark leathery amber color into the pint glass. There is a thin nearly white colored head on top of the beer that tries to leave some lacing along the inside of the glass. Great clarity, and looks pleasing.

S — Smell is quite strong initially, but its not a total smoke bomb. I get notes of sweet malts, caramel, as well as a real light oaky char that leads to a pretty smoky and meaty component. Not much else comes through, smells a bit like a campfire.

T — Taste is mild initially, but as it warms and builds it really develops into quite the smoky treat. Smoked sweet malts dominate, and almost are a bit chewy.

M — Light in bodied, quite crisp, clean, and dry.

O — Good overall, another solid beer from Chuckanut.

They call this a "Rauch Märzen Lager." So sweet and smokey, it's a delirious fragrant experience. Dark brown-tinted amber; it even looks smokey.

Tastes like alder and apple wood. Malty and richly flavored with a nice tingle of carbonation. Another great beer from Chuckanut. On tap at the brewery restaurant.

Well-balanced with relatively subtle smoke, compared to most rauchs I've had.

I'm not a huge Rauch fan, but sure appreciate clean, balanced, malty lagers. Like their Vienna lager, this one has a strong malt backbone. Generous carbonation, moderate head which dissipates quickly. Dry finish. Oh yeah, the smoke. Restrained in a way that lets the overall quality of the lager continue to amaze and please.

At the brewpub the other day.

The beer pours a copper amber color with good head retention and lacing. This beer has just a wonderful nose of smoked bacon and underlying orange citrus. Flavors replicate the nose very well, and I love how the smoked bacon flavor doesn't overwhelm the flavor profile, but instead is just one more interesting element to savor. The beer has no more then moderate sweetness, which is countered very well by the smoke in this beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and drinkability is not bad at all. Very nice.

My first sip of Chuckanut's Rauch gave me a full-on WOW! reaction. I knew more-or-less what to expect in terms of smoke flavor and I was hoping Chuck's effort wasn't over-smoked. It wasn't. But the first sip was still surprising for its bold smoked malt qualities.

As the beer breathed the smokiness receded to a more integrated component nestled among casual hop spice and backdrop sweetness. It is a perfectly clear ale of classic amber with low bubbles and light suds.

Rauchbiers are an acquired taste and I'm not exactly a fan of the style. But Chuckanut's is not excessively smoked as some are and still manages to taste like a beer as opposed to a salami. Recommended if you like rauchbiers.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a pretty light amber color with about a half-inch of just off-white head that dissipated quickly and left a bare trace of lacing.

A basic, and pleasant, malt aroma greets the nose, with just a hint of smokieness wafting in the background. The smoke had a much bolder presence on the tongue, but not overwhelmingly so. A balanced maltyness is the dominant flavor, which is why this brew is more enjoyable than a lot of smoke beers.

The body was typical for a Marzen. This beer was much more drinkable than a lot of smoke beers and having several would be easy to do. Overall, a solid beer that is worth trying when you see it.
