This is an American-style amber ale that has been around for many years, in fact it was one of our first brews ever. It is one of two amber ales that we regularly brew at the pub, this being the drier hoppier of the two. Barkeater Amber is brewed with a variety of crystal malts which gives its red color and slightly sweet malt flavor. It has four hop additions, with the last addition being a relatively large addition of Willamette hops. This beer has a fairly dry finish and has been a local favorite since 1996.

Poured into vintage Old Detroit pint glass. Pours a clear reddish amber with light lacing. Semi sweet, bready on the mouth. Malt flavor wit slight coffee under tones. comes through in the middle with very slight bitterness. Goes down fairly easy. Not bad but wouldn't seek out.

I like this amber ale, because it is a major shift from the normal ambers made here in the united states. this reminds me of maine beers zoe, brick red with a creamy khaki head and superb lacing. a lovely full bodied texture with a certain density that's not common. furthermore, its incredibly full flavored from the red malts, but doesn't retain any sweetness at all. no caramel, no toffee, no candy, just good fresh grain in healthy proportions. hops are finishing only really, but add a nice crisp bitterness akin to their ipa, but not quite as aggressive. similar varietals though, and a fairly complex brew all up. the feel is really nice, with prickly carbonation and enough oomph to be a great fall brew as well as summer. looking forward to drinking a whole lot more of this while I am back east for the next few months.
