On draught at the Brklyn Beergarden in JFK, Ubu ale is dark garnett with a small tan collar leaving light lace.

Smell is mild, sweet caramel malt.

Taste is also pretty mild oddly. Very little here for a fairly sizable beer. Mostly just a little sweet malt mid-palate before a bone-dry, slightly acrid finish.

Mouthfeel is dry, with very full, creamy carbonation.

Drinkability is ok. So little flavor that it is effortless to drink, but it's far from inspiring or anything I'd want to drink again given a choice.

A real nice find while visiting the in-laws in Buffalo, pours a deep amber with nut much head to speak of a nice deeply fruity malty taste with an appetizing dry earthiness that lingers thru the finish.A somewhat chewy very appetizing night cap beer, now I know why I love this style of beer!

I first tasted this beer in the fall of 2001 when I was doing a weekend trail service project in the Adirondacks. That time, it was served out of a big growler. At 7% ABV, I'm not embarrassed to say that my friends and I got a little 'Ubu-ized' that night.

That was a long time ago, though, and I have tasted many beers since then, so I was obviously curious to see how a fresh bottle would stack up to its remembered greatness. Finally, Lake Placid has started distributing!

It was pretty good, but not spectacular. Very drinkable, and it had a very unique taste. Not quite metallic, but maybe burnt or roasted with a very dry finish. Very hard to pin down.

Overall, this is pretty darned drinkable for a strong ale. Be careful!

12oz brown bottle. No freshness date.

Deep, dark, brown/copper beer with a slightly off-white, two finger, tight foam head. Nice retention.

Aroma is nearly non-existent; mostly grainy and powdery, a splash of citrus perhaps ... but my nose is really struggling to even pick that up.

Smooth mouthfeel, medium-bodied. Malt flavour is a bit weak / thin with little sweetness and grain tannins dominating over any distinct malt character. This allows the hops to pull through with a snappy, semi-rind bitterness and coarse feel on the palate. Notes of wood, earth, suggestions of chocolate and chicory and some veggie flavours as the beer warms. Dry grainy finish with husky tannins coating the palate.

Hmm ... not too sure what to think? An English-style Strong Ale at 7% ABV, which you can't even detect, and no real malt character that would suggest such an alcohol content. A bit bland, very mild and uneventful, but regardless, it's quaffable at the moment.

Deep garnet red/brown with a white head that hangs around for a while.

Aroma of dark malt and whiffs of fruit and hop. Hugely flavorful - slightly sweet dark malt flavors are balanced with a restrained, English (Goldings? Fuggles?) hop character. Hints of dark fruit, bitter chocolate, toffee - all there, but the whole seems like more than the sum of its parts. Almost insanely drinkable - a 20 oz. pint of this disappeared surprisingly fast. If you find yourself in the vicinity of the Adirondacks, get yourself a growler of this puppy.

And the best part - come November, it'll be coming out in bottles. Sweet!

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. There appears to be no freshness date on the bottle.

Appearance: Its body has a dark brown color with deep crimson highlights. The head on top was about one and half fingers thick, light tan in color and made very nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Sweet caramel and brown sugary notes pop out in the nose along with some toasted malt and mild earthy/leafy hops.

Taste/Mouth: It has a base of roasted and toasted bready malt flavors. There is plenty of sweetness up front with notes of brown sugar, sweet/buttery bread, diacetyl and dark caramel. The 7%abv adds only a slight touch of character and is mostly well hidden. The middle sees the addition of dried leafy and earth hop flavor along with some bitterness for balance. The finish has a nice blend of sweet malt, a hint of bitter dark chocolate and hops. It has a smooth, slightly slick texture with soft yet active carbonation in a solid medium to full body.

Notes: I would like to thank my good friend Don for telling me about the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery and for recommending the Ubu Ale. I really enjoyed very interesting and complex ale.

Good lacing with a deep orange brown hue, buttery and fruity aroma is think of malt and mildly estery alcohol.

Musty diacetyl, buttery at first then more must flavour and then a splash of fruitiness. Toasted malt flavour hit in the middle hard. Hop bitterness is right up there to keep things balanced. Quite malty with a bitter sweet finish.

A tasty strong ale, it was a tad hard to get by the musty character but other than that it ended up to be not half bad.

12 ouncer sampled, pours dark amber with a moderate tan head, nose is a nice malty sniff, this is a malty brew, notes of caramel, smoky light toffee notes. Pleasantly balanced and packing a well hidden 7%. Took me awhile to get around to this Ubiquitous brew, but I'm really impressed, tasty stuff. Warming malty finish, long lasting, smooth and satisfying, Nice strong ale. Fine winter quafer.

Dark brown body pours with a half finger white creamy head.'quite pleasant. Smells sweet and caramelized, a faint hop smell, some musty quality too. Overall good smell. Tastes starts sweet and coating, medium full body average carbing makes this 7% slide down nicely. On the finish there is something that I can't describe better than funky, not in a bad way, it's interesting and tasty all at once. I'd pick this up again. $1.70 a single at BoTW Rochester.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, clear, dark brown with a touch of red when the glass is raised

Smell: toasted malt and a bit of chocolate

Taste: toasted malt dominates with traces of milk chocolate, minerals, and coffee

Mouthfeel: smooth, medium-light bodied, high carbonation, slightly sweet, and dry

Drinkability: An above average strong ale, but really not interesting enough to merit trying again. Not a bad beer, but nothing jumps out. It almost drinks like an imperial English brown--if there is such a thing. One is enough.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a red-amber color with a white head. The aroma is toffee with some earthy and dirty hops. The flavor is toffee, earthy hops and some fruit. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Decent, but nothing special.

Appearance - dark auburn colour, very clean and crisp looking. some good head, off-white and some nice lacing.

Smell - good combination of hops, malts. very nice pine smell with slight hints of caramel.

Taste - found this to be a more malty/caramel tasting beer with a dry aftertaste. there is no pine taste to this beer at all.

Mouthfeel - added bitterness, more volume, lasting flavour. there really isnt much more of a dynamic added here.

Overall - Not impressed, this is a beer i am happy i tried, but not something that blows my mind.

A great, weighty brown ale, but not nutty and mild like most browns. Rather, this is a big, brazen, malty beer with flavors of maple, caramel and beef jerky. Enough hops to give it a tasty bitterness as well as a minty herbal quality. Effortlessly drinkable considering the proof. The beer is dark amber with a good-sized, lasting head. Aroma is deceptively sweet. Mouthfeel is lustrous, unfiltered, and great. Overall a great beer, certainly as good as any other beer available, it's wonderful to see this in bottles.

Chestnut colored with ruby highlights and a low off-white head that doesn't rise up much and clears quickly.

Low aroma of toasty malt.

Flavor of roasted malt, slightly leathery and smokey, hints of earth and stone, good balance with bitterness but not hoppy. Hints of toffee and marshmallow. Very tasty.

Even mouthfeel, moderate carbonation.

Good beer, very drinkable.

Pours a very dark brown with a tannish head. Fair amount of lacing down the glass. Smells of toasted malt with a bit of earthiness.

Tastes quite strong and powerful. Big rush of toasted malt is quickly followed by a a very dry middle. This then proceeds to a hopped up ending. Lots of little notes of nut and molasses in the middle. It lives up to the category of strong ale.

Poured into nonic pint glass; dark brown/black in the glass with a huge fluffy brown head. Smells malty, sweet and boozy. Taste is similar to a barleywine, except with an odd bitterness to it, almost like...the aftertaste of cheese, is the only way to describe it. It works with the style; lots of lacing on the glass as it's drunk, a delicious and hearty beer.

Dark roasted malts develop into a ruby highlighted brown ale hue with a light cream colored head with evenly spread lacng. Aroma has dark English malts very earthy and herbal tones going on. I had no idea what Ubu was but it's named for a Black Lab from Lake Pacid, NY cool. Nose also has some deep cocoa dark chcolate tones, with a flavor that adds some complex earthy bitterness to a dark roasted English Ale, touch of peated malts and somkiness but finishes dry with herbal/earthy hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied slight alcohol caramel streaks across the palate smooth mild carbonation. Drinkability is decent nothing I'm reaching for soon, somebody visited England and wanted to make English ales in Lake Placid, listen up this is American we don't have to brew to style.

Provided as an extra from orcasteve!

Pours chocolaty brown with a one finger, off white head. Looks like a decent beer we've got here.

Caramel, chocolate and roast in the nose.

Taste is similar but I'm picking up some coffee bean and the slightest hint of hops. This is pretty tasty.

A thin mouthfeel with good carbonation.

This was a great extra and I was surprised by how easy this drank. Thanks Jeff!
