very dark brown, almost black. but almost no head.

this is labeled as a "Strong Ale", which I guess is kind of a catch all, but the aroma and taste I would discribe as more of a Porter character. somewhat sweet and malty, with slight flavors of roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate.

easy to drink, and paired well with a barbaque dinner.

Medium brown color with decent head and lace.
Aroma of malts with hops.
The taste was medium bitterness, malts and some alcohol booze.
The feel was medium body, medium carbonation.
Just a C+ beer.

Beer Name: Ubu Ale
Brewery: Lake Placid Brewing
Location: Utica, NY
Style: English Strong Ale
ABV: 7%
Date: 2023

I served the Ubu Ale in a Belcher glass at 46 degrees. The pour created a frothy and creamy two-fingered head with above-average retention. The beer has a dark brown with a reddish tint and an airy, foamy two-fingered head with poor retention. The slow dissipation left lots of lacing on the glass. The beer is dark brown with a reddish tint, measuring around 26 on the color chart. The beer's appearance is above average for its style.

Nosing the glass, I smell malty, bready, and toasty characters. Swirling the glass again, I detect soft earthiness, floral ester, light caramel, and phenols. I smell these aromas, but nothing prominent stands out; I would suspect the malts to have more of the show than I was smelling.
The malts have more presence in the flavor. The malts are toasty, roasty, bready, crust, cereal grains, light caramel, and sweet. Other flavors are phenols, floral esters, and soft earthiness.
The mouthfeel is astringent and finishes somewhat creamy. The body is medium-plus, and the carbonation is low.
The beer is average; it reminds me of an old ale, but the hops are toned down. The hop presents is firm with a solid malt backbone.

This would be an exceptional winter beer. If I was in Lake Placid in the winter, sitting in the lodge at Whiteface after a couple of runs down skyward, this beer would be unbelievable. Dark, flavorful, bold, but as I said at the St. Lawrence River in the July sun, that’s not exactly what I’m looking for. It’s a great beer, just not a summer beer. I’m trying to have that not ruin this review. Unfortunately, it’s damn near impossible to find their Golden Ale, which at one point you could buy in stores, but haven’t seen it since probably 2018. That is some of the best summer drinking you’ll ever experience.

I've always found this beer under appreciated.
A solid example of a strong brown ale, it has always been an in-betweener - part brown ale part robust porter - part Old Ale. It always tasted best on tap at the brewery after 4 or 5 days camping in the Daks.
The Old Ale is what it reminds me of, though w/out the British hard water and low alpha hop character.
Sharply bittered but balanced more to the malt side, this beer always reminds me of mixes I ask for - " give me a Celebration Ale ( or best IPA on tap) with a splash of Ipswich Porter ( or whatever porter is available)".
The body is medium plus with rich, dark malt flavors and firm hop presence.
A fine, hearty beer from a great little ADK Brewery.

Poured this from a bottle.
A: Pours a dark brown/dark amber body with a small, off-white head with ok retention and lacing.
S: slight, roasted toffee undertones with slight, earthy notes.
T: fairly roasted toffee and alcohol notes with a slight, earthy and musky aftertaste.
M: medium-bodied and pretty smooth.
O: nice feel and taste combo; nice drinking beer overall.

Reddish-brown body with a small tan head and little lacing. Sweet malt aroma with ripe, dark fruit esters. Earthy, moderately sweet taste. Faint hint of dark chocolate. Lightly hopped although more pronounced in the aftertaste. Medium bodied, modestly carbonated mouthfeel with a lingering finish.

This is a clear indication of how BA scores are skewed against unpopular styles. This beer is far better than its rating suggests. Hits the character of a strong ale well, with tons of bold flavor.

This Lake Placid Ubu ale is a strong ale, marketed as a deep Garnet red color with roasted malt flavor. The red does reveal itself when you held up to the light. Roasted malts are on the nose and the taste. Enough hops are present to balance the sweetness. There's a little delayed taste on the tongue, but the mouth feel is generally inoffensive.

Sit Ubu, sit! Good dog.
