From the tap into a slightly chilled pint glass. Pours very dark, with some amber hues, but overall darker than many porters. A healthy, creamy head floats atop it.
Not much scent going on here. Some roasted malts perhaps, but that is all. Maybe poured a little too cold?
Taste is all roastiness. Smooth, roasted, slightly chocolate-toned maltiness. Oh, and did I mentioned the roasty toasty flavors here? I'll be damned if this isn't a porter. Hops are smooth and unpronounced.
The ale-ness of this comes in with the mouthfeel, as it lacks the creaminess of a porter or stout. Wondering if this might have a little more carbonation-driven texture to it out of a bottle.
This is a very pleasant dark beer. If you are on the stout/porter side of life for the night, by all means, fill up. A very drinkable dark ale.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A - A rigorous pour yields a 1 finger head that doesn't last too long. Color is a mostly opaque blackish amber. Looks kinda like a coke. Lacing is moderate.
S - Dark smoky malt. Alcohol.
T - Licorice and dark malt up front with a dry bitter finish. Alcohol is certainly evident.
M - A bit overcarbonated for the style. I felt like it amplified the bitterness making for a rather unbalanced beer.
O - A strong ale that doesn't really shine in the flavor department. It is certainly strong in some aspects but unbalanced.
