This is a unique IPA in that it is much darker in color than most IPA's. It is one of the newest beer styles to hit the market. The beer style is called American-Style India Dark ale. It is essentially an IPA brewed with darker caramel malts to bring about sweeter caramel flavors in the malt profile, while keeping the highly bitter, highly hoppy IPA characteristics that so many Americans love. Our version, is a single hop beer, meaning that we use Simcoe hops for every addition to the kettle. Very bitter, and slightly sweet and nutty, this beer is sort of a cross between a brown ale and an American IPA.

On tap at The Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.
This one does not pour all that dark, more a moderately dark brown, with a one inch foamy, creamy looking head, and sheets of lacing down the glass.
Smells like caramel, black bread, and piney hoppiness. I guess this was brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo, but I don't get any of the juicy complexities that are usually a part of those hops, unfortunately.
This is a pretty paltry Black IPA, all in all. Neither the dark malt backbone or the hops shine brightly enough, it's like the beer can't quite figure out what it wants to be. Just some muddled black malt flavors, and generically piney hop flavors. Not all that great.
This has a very creamy mouthfeel, with a moderate level of carbonation.
Just boring and poorly done, unfortunately.

I'm a big fan of the black IPA style so I was anxious to try this one and a bit disappointed when I did. The color was off to me because it really wasn't all that dark, certainly not black. Basically a cloudy, somewhat unattractive dark brown hue. Head was decent, fell off pretty quickly, lacing left behind was adequate. Aroma and taste were pretty close to that of the brewery's standard IPA with perhaps a slightly increased malt character; the roastiness I like so much, in combination with a big hoppy bitterness, in this style was very much lacking. This was a basically a brown IPA with an increased caramel malt flavor and a fairly uninteresting hop profile. Drank very easy with alcohol well hidden, medium carbonation and a fairly short and clean finish.

On-Tap at the brewery.
A: Served a mahogany color with a good head that fades to nice lacing.
S: Mild aroma of roasted malt, some caramel, pine and fresh grain.
T: taste starts with a mild touch of citrus, roasted malt, a bit of caramel sweetness and a nice bitterness and a dry finish.
F: A good medium body, smooth and fairly creamy. Very well balanced. No hint of the 6.8% ABV. Similar to thier IPA with a bit more character.
O: Good drinker, goes down easy. Not hard to follow with another.
