This beer poured a copper red with a 1 finger high white head. The head dissipated slowly and eventually remained as a ring. Thick lacing was visible on the glass and clung when the beer was finished. The initial smell of the beer was a pleasant hoppiness with some citrus. The initial taste of the beer was citrus and hops. It finished dry as all imperials do. The beer has a medium body with medium carbonation.

All in all, this was a decent beer. It seemed a bit weak, but the bitterness seemed about right for a double, as did the body.

Presentation: It was served on tap at the Pearl Street Grill And Brewery in Buffalo NY and presented in a pint glass.

Appearance: To start I was very impressed with the look and head retention on this beer. The body has a rich coppery orange color with good clarity. It is capped off by a creamy one inch collar of off white foam. As I drink this thick creamy head clings to the glass and coats it with thick lacing all the way down the side.

Smell: The aroma is mixed with sweet malt and deep citrusy hop notes.

Taste/Palate: The flavor starts of with sweet bready and caramel maltiness on a smooth full palate with some citrusy hop notes just starting to creep in. Bright citrusy grapefruit and orange hop notes slowly take over in the middle and are backed up with a firm smack in the mouth of sticky pine resin hop bitterness. This mix of juicy and resinous hops lingers on into the finish.

Notes: This Imperial IPA hits like a light heavyweight and hides a solid 8% very well. I could easily drink one too many of these and be out for the count. Overall it is a very enjoyable beer.

served on tap into a standard pint glass at the brewpub.

one finger of white head, decent retention, some nice webby lace, clear burnt orange body.

in the aroma lots of pine and citrus, a bit floral. mostly hop forward, but as it warms bready malt and a bit of caramel are noticable.

a nice range of hoppy flavors. mostly pine, floral, and citrus with some spicy and grassy characters mixed in there. a little caramel and bready malt balances.

medium bodied, lots of sticky resins.

drinks pretty easily. this always seems to be my go to when at pearl street. not a super great IPA, but still pretty decent.

Enjoyed a the brewpub. One of their better brews although a fair DIPA. A bunch of C-hops in the taste, the aroma, and then sugared down. Not very balanced. Lacey. More of a 1.5X IPA. Average mouthfeel though really tastes like sugar added in the mouthfeel as well.

On tap at the Brewery in a pint glass.

A - Poured deep amber colour with very little head and some visible carbonation.

S - Light nose. Some bitter hops and sweet malts but no specific notes jump out. Possibly a function of being served in a pint glass.

T - Well balanced. Sweet caramel malts and citrus/floral hops. Lacks a normal DIPA punch, tastes more like an IPA.

M - Medium body, lightly carbonated.

D - An enjoyable beer but could use a little more punch. Drank more like an IPA. I would order this again on my next visit.

Very dark brown but still slightly translucent. Nice strong very white head contrasts nicely with the dark brown color. Very nice strong smell of hops with a funky but pleasant note. The taste is magnificent, with the flavor of hops, but nice balance with the malts and a little sweetness that comes through. This beer is the quintessence of smooth. Has just the right amount of thickness without being syrupy. Very drinkable, I can have plenty of these.

tap

Pours a deep clear gold, white suds for a head with a slow dissipation.

Smells of honey and a light piney hop aroma.

Strong pine hops up front in the taste followed by a lit biscuit and honey malt.

Medium body with a light tingle on the tongue.

A nice above-average ale with good flavor, goes down easy, good clean aftertaste.

Appearance- Very clear. Burnt Orange with a Snow White head just under half a finger.

Nose- Surprisingly a bit of the weak point on this beer for me. You sort-of have to search for any aroma. There is some light citrus fruit to pick up on. Certainly doesn't smell very hop-forward.

Taste- The beer is well-bittered. What it lacks in aroma it makes up for in terms of hoppiness in the taste. Initially I get those light citrus tastes and it finishes well with some twang of grapefruit. Not a lot of pine aroma/taste on this one. The mouthfeel is perhaps a bit light for a double IPA but just about spot on for a regular IPA. I don't think they try to sell this as a Double but, if they do, it is a bit lacking. Most notable is the high hop bitterness lacking a really hefty malt backbone of a double.

Overall- A great beer. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy this but it is a great regular IPA. The keyword is bitterness without any real overwhelming malt. Also lacking a bit in terms of aromatics at the initial nose. But still a good beer. I only tried a couple of their beers today but this one would be a beer I'd order again. Probably would be my Pearl St. go-to.

Serving- On Tap in Pint glass at the brewery.

presented with a golden copper pint with a thin head that faded to a ring left small lacing
smell was light caramel malts and heavy pine hops
taste was heavy on the pine and citrus hops but was mostly balanced... as in it didn't knock you on your ass with its hops
mouthfeel medium to full bodied and very drying due to the hops
drinkability is just your average IIPA nothing shocking
