It poured the deepest black color possible with no head whatsoever.
Aroma of dark chocolate, caramels, coffee, vanilla, nuts, overripe plums and mint. Not super complex, but pleasant with an assertive nutty cocoa.
Bold flavor predominating cocoa powder following by notes of coffee, mint, mild tangy citrusy, herbal hops, molasses, oat, mild lactic acid, wood, some spices and licorice. Very dry aftertaste with a lingering roasted and chocolate note. Definitely it doesn’t fell like the announced 70 IBUs.
Full body, almost liquorish and very smooth with low carbonation. Alcohol of 12% abv has proven to be dangerously hidden.
A chocolaty RIS, tasty and not aggressive. Sure worth trying. Interesting that the first time I had it, it felt to me like a heavy condimented RIS, this one felt like a much easier to drink brew. And it still has a couple of years to expiration date. It would not bother me to have more spices and hops.

Wäls takes their operation to another level. Not happy with brewing an outstanding quadrupel and tripel, they have borrowed a double stout recipe from DUM and have added Petroleum to their portfolio. This is batch #3 (more on that later), and it comes bottled in a 360 ml size already corked and caged. Many thanks go out to Sergio for this one! On to the beer:
Black as you could imagine, but the story is the color of the head. I have seen heads that are well tanned, but this must be one of the darkest heads that I've come across. It drops away, evenually exposing the beer to the air above. That nose is incredibly delectable. An aphrodisiac even. The aroma is full of melted Mexican chocolate. Soft yeast aromas mix into the chocolate.
As this was the "infamous" Batch #3, I anticipated a beer that would be very powerful with the carbonation. That is the one downside to an otherwise glorious beer. The antithesis to Lost Abbey, a very overcarbonated stout, one that gives the beer a very spicy kick. Time diminshes the intenisty of the bubbles, fortunately. In regards for taste, there are loads upon loads of cocoa and chocolate. But it also has a Belgian accent to it, bringing it Belgian yeast and prunes. It's seems to be 50% imperial stout, and 50% Belgian dark. It's possible that Wäls is using their own house yeast in this homebrew recreation. It's full bodied, and the alcohol is masked very well considering it's already at 12% ABV.
A very good showing from Wäls, and the scary part is this beer can only get better.

Bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store.
Pours a deep, dark inky black, with a small half-inch head, and a not much lacing.
Smells like chocolate, coffee, hazelnut, roasted malt, and a small amount of booze.
This has just a wonderful chocolate flavor to it, like rich melted Belgian chocolate, with hazelnut, nutty roasted coffee, roasted malt, raisin and other dark fruit flavors, and a small amount of bitter booze, which is ok- this one's 11%.
This one has an insanely creamy mouthfeel, almost milk-shake like, with an appropriately low amount of carbonation (I've heard it could be too high in the past). It's fairly thick bodied, and very drinkable.
This is a great little brewery from Brazil, and I will be on the lookout for more beers from them in the future.

A: Pours a black oiled color forming minimum head. Low retention and no lacings left
S: Roasted malts. Caramel malts. Toffee. Dark chocolate
T: Slightly sweet upfront. Roasted malts. Toffee. Dark chocolate. A little bit sour. I guesd that the high temperature screwed it.
M: Heavy and very creamy body. Low carbonation. Roasted aftertaste
O: Good drinkability. Authentic Imperial Stout made in Brazil

Nice, rich and boosy. High body, with great aroma of cocoa, coofe and caramel. In the mounth we can feel a great body and cocoa, cofee caramel like. Sweet aftertaste with hints of caramel and chocolate. Great beer, nice aroma and flavour, onde of the best beers

This is petroleum. Or maybe old engine oil. Anyway, very dark liqueurish beer, with a dark brown head that easily dissipates. Distinct cocoa notes, hence dark chocolate (of course, it's maturated with belgian cocoa), and a few sweet yiest notes that balance the whole. Despite the fact that it's a 70 IBU Stout, this beer doesn't show a huge bitter mouthfeel effect, which is counterbalanced by the forementioned sweet notes. It's a full-bodied beer, as one would expect, which confirms its molasses appearance, and it has some toffee toasted notes, a gift-cliché from Stout style beers. Lingering finish with astringent qualities. Look forward to tasting another Wäls beer.

A: Pours black with a tall deep brown head, one of the darkest heads out there, like Chocolate Yeti.
S: Belgian cocoa with a hint of dark fruit, dark chocolate.
T: Dominated by dark chocolate especially on the finish, that flavour is clear. Lighter notes of molasses and roasted malt.
M: Much too carbonated, of this I am sure. Full-bodied, but too much coaxing to get the beer down to drinking level.
O: An interesting Imperial Stout, fix the carbonation problems and you could have a winner because the flavour is there.

This beer is the result of a collaboration between a group of Homebrewers (Dum cervejaria) that developed the recipe and the Wals Brewery from Belo Horizonte, Brasil that finally brewed and released it on a large scale.
It's an Imperial Stout with a huge roasted grain bill, oats and belgian chocolate. Along with Colorado Ithaca and Bodebrown Milk Stout it is one of the first and few big stouts produced in the country.
It pours a very opaque dark color with a faint reddish brown cap that recedes very quickly leaving no lacing whatsoever.
Aroma is of roasted dark malts, bitter chocolate, coffee/espresso and mollasses. Faint vanilla notes are also there.
Taste begins with a huge roasted punch followed by lots of mollasses and candy sugar sweetness. Notes of dark chocolate, coffee and a little smoked malt are also perceptible. Finish is astringent and fairly bitter from its roasted grain character as well as hops.
Body is huge, thick and syrupy with moderate to high carbonation. Warming alcohol feel after each sip. Aftertaste lingers for a long while with roasted and dark chocolate notes.
Overall a great example of the reinvented Russian Imperial Stout style popularized by US craft breweries. This is a top notch beer, certainly one of if not the best stout currently being produced in Brasil, so be sure to track it down if you are ever down here.
