Winding down on my Connecticut reviews.... The beer selection used to be a whole hell of a lot better. Nearly 20 taps and a big list of bottles but nothing crazy crazy. Lots of macros and the standard New England micros (Sam Adams, Otter Creek, Hammer & Nail, Magic Hat), plus some not so locals (Pete's, Oregon, Anchor Steam). I drank the Harpoon Winter Warmer because I could.
The service was excellent and the food was very good, as usual. They make great overstuffed "sangawiches", a variety of burgers and chicken sandwiches, and the wings are very good. The menu is a laundry list of standard bar grub and the not so ordinary; items that are more comfy food than anything else (pop tart and cookies & milk apps, and fluffernutter sandwiches). Apparently, they do bands and comedy nights and stuff, but I've never seen it and can't speak for it. It's your standard sports bar with much better food and a better beer selection.

Visited this establishment a few times. Side Street is definitley a college bar. It's pretty much your usual college bar atmosphere. Went on a Friday night for happy hour. The place gets very packed. Almost no room to move. The staff there were very friendly and would keep your glasses full. No the greatest beer selection out there but not bad. Guiness , Sierra Nevada, assorted Sam Smith bottles, Sam Adams, Magic Hat, Harpoon , and Saranac. Not too bad i guess. Food is great there . You won't leave hungry. Prices are reasonable and parking sucks unless you get there early.

Stopped here the other day. The atmosphere here is nothing special. 5 or 6 TV's along with all kinds of beer, sports, and Rock'n'Roll memorabilia are all over the walls and ceiling. The bar stools and tables & chairs look like they were found at a yard sale. This is a college bar, so they do have free popcorn and many beer specials. The service was very good with the waitress coming over many times checking up on us. The selection is misleading. Although they do have 16 taps nothing was really interesting or that good. Guiness,Bass,Harpoon IPA,Sam's, Saranac,Bud,Bud Light, New Castle,Miller Lite, Rolling Rock etc.
A lot of taps do not make a good beer bar. In their defence they do have Sierra Nevada.
What makes this place great is the food. Without a doubt Side St. has the best bar food in New Haven County. The wings are the BEST. The portions are very large making the sandwiches around $8 to $ 9 a little pricey, but there's no way you can finish it.
To sum this up, Side Street Grill doesn't have the best beer, but if your hungry look no further.

Side Street Grill in Hamden, Connecticut. Usually only go here when I am home for the holidays and almost never went here while in High school. On a small side street off Whitney Ave. Inside is pretty small but it opens up outside to a patio which is nice. Restaurant food is pretty good with a bunch of selections, your usual bar food though--burgers, chix sandwichs, and others. Service is good and fast. On tap and in bottles they have an average selection--it tends to change though. From what I can remember they have Brooklyn, Magic hat, Otter Creek, Harpoon, and your average Macros. They did have Longtrail at one point.
Best thing about this place is Tuesday nights--$2 drafts. Also, Wing specials for happy hour. Very good Wings, definately Superbowl Sunday worthy. Pretty good place to start, however, it wouldn't be the first choice for me on an evening!

Atmosphere is fairly comfy, with lots of antiques and college dorm style decorations hanging on the walls and from the ceilings. The menu is pretty extensive and pretty funny to read. Food is very good, and the portions are huge (don't ask for a side of fries unless you really mean it cuz it's about a 3 pound basket). Service is consistently good, but I have to agree with most of the reviewers who say that the beer selection is disappointing. It's fairly standard stuff, and of the handful of micros they have, it's usually the most well known selections. The beer list on the web site must be old because many of those beers are just not available. They used to have many Brooklyns and Magic Hats, but now they MIGHT have Brooklyn Lager and #9 (yawn). Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area. You will be able to get a decent beer and a good meal, but the beer will not be eye opening.

Tap selection is run of the mill american beers with a few good american micros and guiness. The bottle selection used to be alot bigger but still have alot of good foreign and domestic beers. The food is good and the portions are huge. I got bonless buffallo wings and there was 4 full chicken breasts on my plate and the cheese fries come on a small/medium pizza pan. Overall good local place but I wouldn't travel far.
