Some how I managed to never see this bottle (or brewery) in the 4 years I have been drinking craft beer. I really wish I could turn back time to 15 minutes before I bought this beer. Not only would I not buy it, I would purposely bump the shelf and break every bottle so that no one else would have to suffer through this beer.

Pours crystal clear with no head. Looks like apple juice. No beer-like quality in the appearance. Aroma is overly ripe pineapple, pineapple jolly ranchers, and stale boxed white wine. Flavor is pretty much what I expected: pinneapple juice with a stale white wine oaky character. Extremely sweet, gritty, sugary mouthfeel on the teeth, and leaves an oxidized beer/wine flavor when its gone.

Avoid at all costs.

I come from Ontario. Our beer and liquor stores are overseen by industry or government monopolies, so it's not really a free marketplace situation where consumer choice drives what appears on the shelves. That means that the scariest thing about this beer is that some nitwit functionary somewhere decided it was tasty and belonged up on the shelf beside the decent stuff.

First bad sign is that it pours up fizzy like a can of soda pop. No head, no lace. Aroma is overwhelmingly of cheap or chemically derived pineapple juice. Taste is very tart artificial pineapple with a big butterscotch bite.

I don't see how this could be remotedly described as any kind of beer. Possibly passable as a summer cooler poured over a ton of ice. Would also like serve as a semi-decent base for a wing or rib sauce.

Note that the original label has a sticky saying the alcohol content is not 3.5%, but a mere 1.5%

Buy it to try if you need a notch on your belt, otherwise pass.

Murky golden colour with a head that rapidly disappears. The smell was quite strong, like pineapple syrup and very musty, and it was difficult to get past in order to try a sip. Same qualities in the flavour, but less pleasant. The pineapple flavour seems very manufactured and had a chemical quality, not remotely like fresh fruit (or even canned fruit). This one went down the sink rather fast.

Bottle: Poured a chemical-like yellow color beer with no head and faint carbonation. Aroma of fake pineapple is all over this. Taste is entirely covered by the pineapple syrup and leave little place to lambic. Can’t really say I care for this one but boy am I curious to taste the unblended lambic from De Troch.

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a cloudy yellow body with a very bubbly off white head. Aromas are fruity, pineapple, some citrus. Taste is sweet, pineapple, no traces of hops or malt, though I am sure they are here. Won't be getting again. More of a cooler to me. Marker at only 1.5% ABV.

Wow! This is not what I expected at all. My Mother and Girlfriend both like sweet lambics like Lindemman's(sp?) so since I was at a Superbowl party with both of them I thought this stuff would be appreciated. Boy was I wrong. This stuff tastes like artificial pineapple flavoring and cheap cooking sherry. We could barely finish a 12 ounce between four people.

The wife saw this and wanted to try something pineapple. As a precursor to the the actual review, her response was "How can people give this a bad grade?!?"

A - Clear yellow beer, almost miller light-like, small head that left some stick on the sides.

S - Smells a little like rotten fruit and strong ether alcohol, strange as this is supposed to be a 3.5%. Lot of sugar and juice smell in there.

T - Disgusting, somehow this tastes heavy in alcohol, which doesn't seem possible. Must be some sort of screwed up chemicals. Something which kind of tastes like pineapples and citrus fruit is present, but not good. Do not like this one bit.

M - Light, sugary, clean finish.

D - It's easy to drink because of the low ABV if you like bad beer.

Made the mistake of including this in a cider/fruit beer tasting I hosted tonight without having tried it before-hand. Feel so sorry for the people I gave this to. I really dislike this beer. Hot garbage meets spoiled, rotten fruit. Appallingly sweet, cloying, and just plain bad. Ghastly liquid, steer clear.

Appearance: Pours a clear, vaguely orange-hued bdoy with a few large, stray, unorganized bubbles, but nothing to call a head.

Smell: Oddly chemical-scented nose, as if one set fire to a bucket of various office supplies and long-expired pineapple husks.

Taste: Disturbing, eye-watering flavor of mold-infested pineapples and, as always, that signature De Troch trash can juice taste. A boatload of syrupy, cloying table sugar does what it can to quell and temper the loathsome flavors. As with the nose, there's this conspicuous chemical quality to it that coats the tongue. Sweet finish with some of that fetid character oozing through.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Woof. A ghastly, awful beer by any stretch of the imagination. If nothing else, at least this brewery is consistent.

375ml green bottle with no freshness date. Flavored with natural juices ... meaning sweetened.

LOOK: Clear pale golden, minimal lacing.

SMELL: Over ripened fruit, honey, pineapple, very sweet, oak, sweet wine.

TASTE: Sweet pineapple, chalky, oaky, musty cork.

Yikes!! Overly sweet, cork favor pretty much kills it for me. Not recommended.

"They took a lambic, and then they ruined it." -jalaffler

That comment about sums up Chapeau Exotic. "Lambic" ruined with loads of saccharine pineapple candy syrup. Thanks Don (I guess) ;)

High clarity orange color, little to no head. It looks like a lambic, but that's where the similarity ends. Musty cork and iodine smell, honey and sweet-n-low packets. Sugary juice. It tastes like overly sweetened iced tea stirred with a fistful of pineapple dum-dum suckers. Very one dimensional, with less character than a wine cooler. I'd believe this was a kiddie drink in Belgium. Had to water the garden with this, couldn't force myself to finish it. Avoid!

Bottle labeled best before '07.

Poured a lighter and clear yellow color with a small sized white head. Aromas and tastes of, drum roll please, pineapples. I found this to be on the one dimensional side and didn't really care for the pineapples. Cloyingly sweet.

What is that stink? A very hard beer to judge as to the taste because of the stench that assaults your nostrils every time you draw it in.
Appearance wasn't bad, just limited crown to go with the straw coloured hue.
Carbonation is limited as well.
The aroma is that of rotting vegetation and pineapple, hmm, methinks rotten pineapple vegetation.
The taste is primarily pineapple, but what have they done to it?
Not impressed.

From a 12oz very heavy green bottle capped and corked - Pours a golden yellow with a slight haze and no head just a few white bubbles hanging out at the top of the glass. Smells mostly sweet with plenty funk present. The sweetness is reminiscent of a charms lollipop. First sip is super sweet and musty with honey and pineapple dominating. There is hardly any funk nor is there much sourness. The massive sweetness has me reaching for an insulin injection and makes this lambic not very drinkable. As it warms the pineapple takes over the honey leaving only additional sweetness.

Pours very pale yellow with no head, just a little foam around the edges, but with nice bubbles making their way up my glass. If Michelob Ultra and Champagne had a baby, this is what it would look like. Smell is very funky sweet with a lot of phenolic plastic aromas that are making me feel apprehensive about the taste. I am really not getting any fruity aromas, perhaps a little bit of apple. It actually smells kind of like whiskey and apple juice served in a brand new plastic cup. The flavor is quite surprising. There is a definite lambic tartness up front but not as much as I was expecting. Overall this beer has a lot of sweetness. Pineapple and banana like flavors really don't break through till the very end as you swallow. Only a rumor of the mustiness that I enjoy so much in lambics. A pretty thin mouthfeel keeps it from being cloyingly sweet. I have to say though that as far as drinkability goes, this is probably the one and only bottle I will ever have. What a bizarre beer.

Chapeau Exotic
Brouwerij De Troch

Pours a near lifeless pale gold, some active carbonation is seen rising to the top. The head consists of large bubbles.

Aroma of sour green apple, pineapple juice, cidery and quite sweet to the senses.

In the taste, cider like, more green apple skin, pineapple juice, musty cork. In the finish there is a very small tartness that just gets dominated by fruit juice flavor.

Mouthfeel is light bodied, drinks like scantly carbonated apple/pineapple juice.

Overall, this drink is very sweet and main stream. Not a whole lot of lambic flavor at all. It is basically juice.

So this is the commercial effort displaying the tradition of mixing young lambics with fruit juice? I don't think so. This really could have been a nice ale coctail for the summer but it is just too cloying to make it. The very smell is soo sickeningly sweet it smells like bubble gum and confectioner's sugar with a slight mustiness to it...looks like a faded orange in the glass...cap vanishes quickly. Slick moith feel. Tastes like an over sweetened fruit drink ( pineapple) with some slight mustiness...certainly no lambic horse blankent tastes are destinct...not bad but not good either ...should be relegated to the "summer patio drinks for ladies" category. Not to my liking because of the cloying effect...if it were not as sweet it might have made a nice lambic cocktail

This alcopop, I mean, lambic pours a hazy dark amber with a pathetic head and no lace. The aroma is nothing but pineapple, with maybe a faint hint of farm funk in the back (then again maybe my glass just wasnt clean enough). The taste is pure pineapple concentrate, theres no other dimensions. The mouthfeel is surprisingly syrupy and mouthcoating. At least its not distractingly sweet or artificial tasting. Just pure pineapple, wheres the lambicness?

Ive never had a beer with only 1.5% ABV before. It came in a tiny 250 ml bottle which is a good thing because I dont think I could drink more. Id say avoid unless youre a pineapple juice advocate as well.

Tarnished Krugerrand gold with minimum head but maximum clarity. This is a much better appearance than that of the last bottle I sat down with; it was abhorrently clouded and looked utterly repugnant. (People pouring beware: these little Chapeau bottles often pack a good sized portion of coagulated yeasts.) The gleam and dazzle in this sample, however, makes it look far more inviting.

The smell, on the other hand, isn't exactly what I'd call enticing. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of pineapple but that seems to matter little in terms of aroma - this boasts something oaky, a whiff of something tart and a diabetes inducing level of sugar but not much of anything easily discerned as pineapple, or even overly fruity for that matter. It's a musty, soiled scent that scratches at the inside of the nostrils.

There's one immediately obvious problem with this beer: the tooth-decaying level of sugar. This is pinching sweet to the point of really obstructing the delicacy of the pineapple flavour, of which this beer could use a little more of given the label depicts one (even if it's not included in the name). I'd think toning down the sweetness and upping the fruity tartness would be a welcomed improvement. As it is, this gets really cloying really fast.

Some flags ought to have been raised after inspecting the ingredients list: beer, pineapple, sugar, flavour. Isn't listing "beer" as one of the ingredients in a beer kind of like using a word in the definition of that same word? Hasn't anyone ever told you not to do that De Troch? And if you're going to use artificial flavouring couldn't you have chosen better than this? The beer tastes like a cheaply made pineapple syrup blended with ginger ale.

Although this time I will finish the minuscule bottle, Chapeau Exotic has been one of my very few 'drain pour' beers (amidst a scorching summer heat no less). The excess sugar and faint fruitiness might be appealing to children, but its dreadfully low carbonation and cloying syrupy character isn't something I'd think would be appealing to many adults. Even if you really love pineapple don't assume this will be a sure hit. Venture with caution.

Looks like a macro, nothing special. Smells horrible, like stinky feet. Taste is alright, pineapple, like a beer pina colada. mouthfeel is pretty well reminiscent of fruit juice, well, more like a pina colada. This is something that i wouldn't drink everyday, but could be, in theory, something that would taste good mixed with something else. (coconut milk or whatever to make a pina colada)

In not so many words, the Pina Colada of beers.

Tried this bottle on a whim.

Pours a hazy peach colored scrod chunkers filled pour into my wine glass.

Scents are a touch musty with a coconut aspect in the fore.

First swigs: Barely a lambic flavor, more like just a wild wayward fruity ale. Light slight pucker. Coconut and a smooth not acidic, orange and tangerine with the fruity aspects. Tastes like a mixed fuity drink withou the awl-kee-hawl punch. Dry finish. Just can't make up its mind to be a fruit beer or a lambic.

Last swigs: A tad fruity without the lambic pucker. Interesting, but nothing to seek. Not required reading.

Appearance: clear, pale orange color, highly carbonated, short, fizzy head.
Aroma: intensely powerful, bubblegum, and pineapple, a candied sweetness, and a touch of sour.
On first sip, treacly sweet, thick and chewy, pineapple is felt, but only underneath all the sugar. Tastes rather flat and gummy.
Light body, sticky mouthfeel, and short, though slightly cloying finish.
Flavor, just to start with, lacks quite a bit. Sadly, one of the lesser offering from De Troch. They could have pulled this one off, but lost it somewhere.
Yup, I'm still searching for that stellar pineapple lambic!

33 cl bottle purchased last year for around four dollars at some store in LA, listead as 3.6% ABV, currently drinking from my Stone sampling glass, color is gold with some light orange tint, 1/2 inch bubbly white head that does not last long, minimal lacing, aroma has a large amount of pineapple, also guava, grass, tons of sugar, sweetness, and mild lemons, taste starts off with nothing but sweet pineapple, sweetness in the middle, finish also has pineapple dominating everything else, warms up with citrus but it still has the taste you would get from the juice left over at the bottom of a can of Dole pineapples, sweet and sugary mouthfeel, medium bodied, could use some more carbonation, taste lasts a decent amount of time, this stuff is filling, low in alcohol but could drink much more than the bottle of it, sweetness needs to be balanced by something else, pineapple is quite pronounced in here, too bad it is not sour at all, that would have been awesome with the fruit flavor, too sweet, would not drink again, not recommended
