My only beef with this fine establishment is that it is way too far from my home...then again, that might be a blessing in disguise, as I would probably be there every night and my wife would divorce me. Here are my two cents...
Atmosphere: Even though I am a beer geek, I don't necessarily look for bars where I can shoot the shit with other beer geeks. I simply just don't want to run into the fratboy crowd, or disrespectful ones who waltz in and get angry when the bar doesn't have Budweiser. Unfortunately, you do run into these types here from time to time, but fortunately that only constitutes a minority of the time. Typically, you'll run into the respectful, down-to-earth, low-key, beer loving crowd, which makes the experience very enjoyable, and a healthy retreat from a bad day.
Quality: In this day and age where a guy can open a bar, throw a few taps of Brooklyn, Sierra Nevada, and Dogfish Head on the bar, and label his joint a 'beer bar', this place is a refreshing standout. Whereas you might find the aforementioned 'large micros' (and their brethren) at most other NJ beer bars, this place focuses on the REAL micro micros. Expect to find Anderson Valley (CA), Sixpoint (NY), and RiverHorse (NJ), to name a few, amongst some of the rarer offerings from the Dogfish Heads of the world. This selection is second to none, the freshness is excellent, and the ownership continually strives to wow you. Furthermore, impressive promo nights....Capt Lawrence, Sixpoint, HighPoint, Flying Dog, to name a few...will keep you coming back.
Service: Vito, the owner, will not only impress you with his beer knowledge, but also with his personality, and Matt, the main bartender, is a great guy as well. On numerous occasions, when we've been chatting about new beers we've tried, and he's mentioned one that I've not sampled, he'll have it the next time I come in and crack a bottle open just for me to taste. Similarly, don't be scared to ask them for a sample if you are unsure of what beer to select from the 20 taps (or numerous bottles).
Selection: I already touched on this earlier, so I'll skip right to...
Food: Non-existent. The kitchen is 'coming soon', but there are plenty of delivery menus on hand to order some of northern NJ's finest eats; the management doesn't mind, and in fact, encourages it.
Summary: My favorite beer bar in NJ, bar none.
