Notes/Commercial Description:
The kinetic beauty of spicy hops grabs you by the nose and lets you know: this is German-inspired beer. A mild, bready malt sweetness greets you at the lips, smoothing the crisp hop flavors. Flywheel is meant for bombastic celebrations of singing voices and clamoring mugs. But then, that first contented moment of happy hour is uniquely celebratory as well.

Appearance: Straw yellow color with some darker accents of orange. Half a finger of head on the pour which dissipated quickly to a thin layer across the top. Very light random lacing left behind. Active carbonation is a touch low for the style.

Smell: Butter and dough blast out on the front. A full bodied nutty malt profile that I always expect from a good german pils. Some light fruits and lingering bright yeast notes shine on the body. A touch of pepper finishes this one off.

Taste: Smooth, creamy malts on the front really pull the drinker in. The yeast has a very clean profile on the body with accents of butterscotch, prairie grass, and grains. The finish is a compilation of all the accents found in the body easily settling into the palate.

Mouthfeel: Full body with the creamy, buttery malts being the biggest player. Carbonation is a touch low but makes for a very easy drinking lager.

Overall: Excellent german pils from Metropolitan. New to my area and I am always welcoming of more well crafted lagers in an ale driven world. Definitely worth a shot.

Glass: Ayinger pilsner glass

Metropolitan's Flywheel is a satisfying German pilsner that features many of the classic flavors found in fresh German examples of the style. There's an interesting malt base below a complex mixture of hops that makes nearly all aspects of drinking this rewarding and enjoyable from a flavor perspective. One I will enjoy again.

Pours a 3cm tall head of white foam, made up of small-sized bubbles that yield a frothy appearance. Retention is above average, the foam lasting around two minutes in a decline to a thin cap of lace atop the body of the beer for the duration of the drink. Lacing is excellent, with heavy, thick patterns, lines, and dots clinging to the walls of the glass. Beer is a moderately dark golden yellow color, with light bringing out pale yellow hues. Carbonation visible through the slightly hazy body (10% opacity), low in number, moderate in activity.

Aroma is very rich, of spicy, floral, herbal, and slightly peanut-like hops, which I find to be fairly common in fresh, quality German pilsners.

Overall flavors are of colorful hops that contribute spicy, floral, herbal, and somewhat lemon-like characters along with a sweet and occasionally grainy and biscuit-like malt flavor. Front of palate tastes floral, grassy, and spicy continental hops with an underlying pale malt sweetness. Mid-palate experiences moderate hop bitterness with fairly bright, lemon-like, dried herbs and grasses, floral, and spicy hop combinations; modest peanut and grape ester; a bit of pale malt sweetness and bread-like flavors rounds the experience out nicely. Back of palate tastes of dried grass and herbs with underlying notes of flowers, moderate to medium-high hop bitterness, and a slight peanut flavor and pale malt sweetness. Aftertaste of grainy and biscuit-like pilsner malts with moderate residual bitterness, and spicy, floral and lemon-like hop characters.

Beer is medium-light to medium in body, with carbonation of medium to medium-low intensity, leady to a mostly foamy (4/5) and slightly smooth (1/5) mouthfeel that fits the beer itself well, and is in line for the style. Closes dry, with medium amounts of stickiness lingering on the palate and lips.
