Brewed in homage to the beer of Cologne, Krankshaft is a pale straw hued smile in a glass. We throw in a little wheat malt to round out an easy Santiam hop bitterness. There are no Köbes to serve them up, but you should feel free to have as many as you like.

I wholeheartedly wanted to love a Kolsch style beer that came out of Chicago. As many beers that come from Metropolitan. However, this beer is close to nothing that comes out of Cologne. Being that I've been in Cologne, Germany... this beer is lackluster.

The malt is what makes a Kolsch. And Metropolitan lacks in terms of this. There should be a clean finish of my palate that is lacking. Good effort for the brewery, but in likeliness... nothing that comes from Cologne.

A clean malt with German hops and so forth, however lacking in style and taste. Numerous times I've wanted this beer and tasted this beer to no avail. The firm and minute nutty taste that comes from a Kolsch is not here.

Had this on-tap at Hackney's at the Printer's Row section of Chicago.

Served in a pint glass.

A: Poured a clear straw color with about a 1.5 finger head. Nice, classic Kolsch look.

S: VERY strong barley and grain scent... much more potent than I'm used to in this style. Still, not bad.

T: I bit more sugar-laced than most Kolschs on the market for sure, but still not bad, and the bitter finish was a bit off to my mind.

M: This certainly got a bit cloying after a while, which is not a good thing in the Kolsch world. Lots of lacing.

O: Meh, didn't care much for this one.

Appearance: Murky straw yellow with excellent foam and lacing.

Smell: Musky fruitiness. Strong yeast. A bit like a Belgian ale.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Subtle lemon dominates the flavor. Nice crisp mouthfeel. Very bubbly and refreshing.

Overall Drinkability: A very good American Kölsch.
