Brewed in homage to the beer of Cologne, Krankshaft is a pale straw hued smile in a glass. We throw in a little wheat malt to round out an easy Santiam hop bitterness. There are no Köbes to serve them up, but you should feel free to have as many as you like.

My first review of a beer style that I actively dislike. Expect bias.

A - poured from the bottle, vigorously, into my goblet. Pale yellow (urine?) with nice head that recedes quickly with little lacing. Carbonation and clarity are nice.

S - yeasty, a little malty, with some honey on the tail end. Damn this beer, it's making me like it before I've tried it. And I so want to hate it.

T - ok, back to disliking it now, but I think it's only because I really don't like kolsch style beers. Sweet up front, marked fruitiness (mostly lemon) that carries through, with a tart finish. Crisp and clean though.

M - crisp and light, the carbonation is nice. Feels a little too much like drinking a soda, but again, bias.

O - still not at all my style. Ugh. But it's complex and nice, if you're into this style. I hesitate to say "chick beer." I'll stick to my pale ales, but I could (very rarely) enjoy one of these in the spring or summer. A nice kolsch.

12 oz. bottle served in a plastic cup at the Cubs vs. Sox game.

A: Pours a clear golden yellow with a fluffy, long lasting white head forming on the pour. It leaves some sticky sheets of lace behind as I drink.

S: Pretty standard. Lagery yeast with a clear, crisp hop profile. Grassy and slightly malty as well.

T: The taste is a step up as this has a more fruity hop profile than the nose. The finish is nice and clean with a pale malt body.

M: Light bodied, very refreshing with a nice ample carbonation.

O: Well rounded with a good taste and high drinkability. What more could you ask for at a ball park.

Appearance: Arrives with a clear pale golden color capped by whipped egg white foam; good lacing

Smell: Crackery and lemony

Taste: Taste follows the nose, with a rather lemony, slightly acetic balance to the cracker malt; just a hint of tart apple on the finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with crisp carbonation

Overall: Refreshing and flavorful

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pilsner glass.

A: Pours a hazy sunshine yellow with a fluffy head of coarse, sticky bubbles. Great retention and lacing.

S: Thick, slightly soapy yeast, herbal, bright sweet pale malt, a bit of citrus and stone fruits from the hops and malt.

T: Mildly medicinal esters pop up first - floral and a little fruity - followed by big fresh grain and yeasty pale malt.

M: What a great mouthfeel. Soft, creamy, great carbonation.

O: Nice to taste a good, fresh rendition of a kolsch.

A: Golden and very clear. Lot of carbonation bubbles visible and a pretty persistent head.

S: Grainy sweetness, toffee, and very slight hop aroma. Nice light-malt aroma.

MF: light bodied, and amply carbonated.

T: A bit of grainy sweetness, just a touch of bitterness, some sweet malts through the middle with a faint caramel taste and a clean finish.

O: This is a great beer, and an excellent warm weather beer, very crisp and clean. Perfect examples of this style.

Pours golden with a thumb of ivory colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Floral & perfumy

T: Grainy, lemony, golden delicious apple, some crackery dry notes up front. Lemons & pears mix as this warmms with some mineral hoppyness. Finishes crisp & crackery with nice lemony notes with pear nuances

MF: Light, crisp, very nice balance indeed

Drinks so easy, a very well done & refreshing Kolsch

Poured from a 12 oz (355m l) bottle into a Sam Adam's Perfect Pint glass (January 26, 2012). The best before date of "APR 20 2012" is printed on the bottom of the sixpack.

Apparently this is brewed with a small addition of wheat to the mash, which should help reduce bitterness and smooth out the flavor.

Eyes: Pours a super clear golden straw color. A clean near-white head. Near perfect for the style.

Nose: Appetizing hints of grain, bread, while undertones of lemon/citrus.

Tongue: Follows the nose with mild malt and a lemon zest finish. A bit lighter than I might like, but very solid all around.

Mouth: Lively and spritzy, but not enough to overwhelm the palate.

Libation: Very easy drinking and flavorful.

The only small issue I have is that I would prefer a bit more heat on the flavor profile, but not enough to seriously detract from this great brew. The addition of the wheat does a great job increasing smoothness. Easy drinking, smooth, this is a great example of the style.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a seidel mug.

A: Pours golden and spritzy with a full, pure, white head.

S: Bready and funky with some orange marmelade and toast notes. Interesting...

T: Pretty funky here to. Almost in a Belgian way(?) Hop bitterness is pretty low and malt is pretty restrained, but theres room to move in this style, so no problems there.

D: Damn drinkable (like all Metro's beers) and suprisingly complex for the low ABV.

Overall: This was unlike any Kolsch I've had. That being said, it definitely imprinted itself in my memory and I look forward to purchasing it again soon.

12 oz. bottle poured into pint glass. Served with sweet apple smoked chicken sausage with brown rice and steamed vegetables.

A: Very pale, yet slightly cloudy yellow. Fairly thick, frothy white head crowns the beer. Pretty much spot-on for the style.

S: Smells grainy, bready, slightly fruity (lemon?), and has floral overtones.

T: Starts off with a lemony and crisp grass twang. It fades into a slight, short hint of flowers, and finishes really bready and grassy.

M: Medium body. Really easy drinking. The beer just continually begs you to take another sip.

O: Pretty much excellent in every aspect. I'd maybe suggest adding a more assertive hop note at some point, as the brew was not as bitter as I'd like in a kolsch (35-40 IBU would be amazing, in my opinoin.) This is more of a finishing touch suggestion, though, as everything else is top-notch.

A - Golden brown colored beer with a bit of a white head that didn't stick around long but left some great sheets and stick on the side of the glass.

S - Bready, decent bit of yeast, slight sweetness.

T - Bready taste with a bit of grain character and some lightly sweet malts. There is a slight bit of balancing hop bitterness that evens it out.

M - Crisp, lighter side of medium bodied. Good carbonation.

O - Nice little beer here. Easy to drink, goes well with food, not a bad take on the style. Could drink more than one.

Have seen this sitting on the shelves forever and never picked it up until today. This beer is a bright crystal clear golden color topped off with a half inch of white fluffy head that recedes to a film an leaves nice lacing. Aroma is grainy and mildly bready, mild grassy earthy herbal hop aroma. The initial pour yields a bit of bread yeast aroma as well. Taste has a bit of makeovers with more breadiness and grainy flavor. Light fruityNess emerges as the beer warms a bit. Mouthfeel is nice and light and refreshing. Good carbonation. Very good beer.

A - Translucent straw color with a foamy white head that sticks around for a good while. Brilliant clarity. Lacing down the glass adds a nice visual touch.
S - Light corn, a bit of apple, and a touch of noble hops on the nose. Very pleasent and true to style.
T - The dry finish makes it immensely refreshing. Just enough hop character to make it interesting.
M - Light and well carbonated.
O - This is a highly drinkable beer- one that I would offer to any Bud/Miller/Coors drinker without hesitation. A great offering by one of the newer and better local breweries in the Chicago area.

This is an ok Kolsch style lager. Pours clear and light golden color. Nice white head. Bitter, but not overpowering. Very drinkable beer, however I am not a fan of this style. A slight metallic after taste. I know quite a few people who love this beer, so I feel bad not giving it a higher review. That said, in my opinion this is an average beer at best. It's better than coors light, but not by much. I love supporting local breweries so I will continue to try everything that Metropolitan produces, but this is not my favorite.

Thanks to htomsirveaux for this extra.

Appearance: Pale wheat gold. Super pale. Head is bright-white. Some lacing. Thin cap on the beer. Lively carbonation pulls from the bottom of the glass.

Smell: Slight wheat tang. Some grassy notes. Lemon zest in the back. Pale malts as well. Floral notes from the hops. Delightful.

Taste: Wheatier and tangier than I would expect from the style. Nice touch of lemon pulls form the back. A little sweetness. Floral hops round the whole thing out. Very delicate flavor. Slight sulfur taste flits through the back.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and clean. Slightly grainy. Smooth. Carbonation is spot on. Dry, but not overly so.

Overall: Easy drinking and packed with flavor, especially for such a pale beer.

Poured from the bottle into a tumbler.

What an incredibly pale straw color and hazy body. This looks so weak looking with a white head that does not stick around, but keeps a small puck. I have never seen a Kolsch this light ever this looks weak.

Nose is sour, and smells like bile/vomit. NASTY! There is a hint of yeast and bread but I can't get past this bad nose. Hints of lemon pledge.

Taste improves a bit but does not help much, has an incredibly tart and sour hints on the finish and alcohol drying in the palate. Cotton mouth aftertaste in the finish bordering on malt liqour taking away malt and crisp. No sense of bread either.

Overall, wow this might be the worst Kolsch I have ever had.

The color is a dull straw yellow and the head is white and fizzy.

The smell is floral perfume, lemon zest, and heavy on the bread.

The taste has a perfume-like characteristic and lemon zest. The malts appear grainy in the flavor.

Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Carbonation is prickley.

This is a solid beer but without a lot of depth. It's very refreshing, though, and is a good example of the style and a great summer beer.

Got this in a bottle at the French Market in Chicago. I was offered a plastic cup, so I opted to drink straight from the bottle; I can only assume the appearance was 'good'.

Kölsch is quickly become my favorite summer drink. This beer was very light and refreshing. Nice an bready and not too hoppy. Great beer, not much to say. I will definitely get it again, the brewery is so close to me.

Crank it up Gees!!! Trying the Krankshaft Kolsch...the appearance is ok....very yellow with no head, clear. The smell is mostly grain with some hints of citrus. The taste is powered by grain that is somewhat burnt. There are some hints of citrus, but this beer is really not to my liking. Mouthfeel...its light and somewhat easy drinking. but not one that I would choose unless the alternative was a typical American Adjuct from macro breweries. Worht a try sure....worth a revisit....i dont know.

A - Golden beer with a nice white cap.

S - A little bit of bready malt, some minerality. Just nice.

T - Spot-on flavor. Bready malt, mineralilty and a pristineness that makes it extremely refreshing.

M - Nice soft effervescence.

O - I would drink this all the time, were it available in my market.

The last of my sampling of the Metropolitan beers. The 3 previous styles were as near to perfection as any German beer consumed at its origin, so the Krank Shaft has a lot to live up to!

A -- Clear, pale straw color with a dense, white head that holds well through the duration and leaves light lacing.

S -- Juicy malt with mellow citrus characters finishing with spicy noble hops in good balance.

T -- Mmm. Bready malt up front that folds into mellow fruit characters then finishes with light, spicy & bitter hops. The malt makes a great backbone throughout the beer leaving a great, sweet bready character in the aftertaste.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft to crisp across the palate, finishing dry and the body is light.

O -- Overall impression? Another style home run -- not to mention delicious, to Metropolitan. I'm glad I looked past the price tag on these beers to find that they are so spot on for the styles - and so fresh that they will give anyone the true character of German style beers. Don't know what Aasher was drinking, but I'm guessing it may have been the first pour of the day and he should have requested a fresh glass.

Had on tap at Hay market, a fantastic brew pub in Chicago everyone should visit when given the chance. This beer came out with a thin head and clear gold body but what really grabbed my interest was the smell; very floral and alluring. The taste was amazingly clean and smooth but not wimpy, strong tones of wheat and a zest of lemon followed each swig. Didn't expect much but this is now my go to session beer when found on tap.

I had this one on tap while in Chicago yesterday. I hadn't heard of it before so I thought I'd give it a try. It was a huge disappointment. It arrived a very pale gold in color with a light white head. It was very clear. It smelled of a skunked dortmunder lager and didn't have much "kolsch" to it at all. I was really disappointed. The flavor too, of skunked dortmunder. Bummer! It drank light but I hated it. Luckily the manager came by and asked us how our meal was and brought me a fresh Lagunitas IPA to replace it. Amazing and courteous gesture!

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #48 (Jan 2011):

Sizable plume of white head tapers to a clinging lace; pale yellow color has a great clarity to it. Smells of fresh- baked shortbread, hint of lemon zest and subtle wildflowers. Deep-planted crispness presents the lighter body in a lush manner. Dry from start to finish, the lightly toasted cracker maltiness holds more flavor than expected. Lemon herbal hoppiness lends more than enough bitterness to get by. Ghostlike sulfur. Clean grainy finish. Obviously someone got their homework right here--this is more proof that smaller brewers can brew extremely flavorful, pale-colored beers. Kudos to Metro!

Pours a crisp, light golden yellow with a hint of haze and about a finger of white foam that quickly thins into a ring with decent lacing.

S - Lemon, grassy, floral funk and a bit of malt. Very nice. Better than I expected.

Taste agrees with the smell - crisp and refreshing - some floral yeast, some lemon, a decent dose of malt, and a smooth finish. An excellent summer beer, but not too shabby in winter time.

Mouthfeel is crisp and not quite light bodied. A tad bit sticky, and well carbonated.

Highly drinkable. I'm impressed by this one.

Another great bottle received from readbaron. Thanks!

12oz bottle poured into a stange glass. Pours a very cloudy yellow/gold. A small white head caps it off right away, but then dissipates quickly. Lots of sticky lace left behind. The nose is fresh with aromas of grass clippings, lemon-lime, spring, floral tones.

The body is crisp and clean. Carbonation level spritzes it up, without fizzing the mouth up. Lots of lemon tartness, mild hop presence, slight earthy quality. This is a splendid "tame" beer. Perfect for the warmer months, but just fine any other time. Tasty, refreshing beer. Recommend.
