Brewed in homage to the beer of Cologne, Krankshaft is a pale straw hued smile in a glass. We throw in a little wheat malt to round out an easy Santiam hop bitterness. There are no Köbes to serve them up, but you should feel free to have as many as you like.

From: Binny's, Schaumburg, IL
Date: Best by 04/2014 on bottom of six-pack
Glass: Founders snifter

Krankshaft is a decent kolsch, a bit harsher and more raw than other examples of the style, indicating that it probably needs a bit more conditioning time than the brewers at Metropolitan allow it (or at least this batch). While not exactly "refreshing," as it's a bit too substantial in flavor to be considered that, this was definitely an easy-drinking beer that would be good to have a few of at the bar.

Pours a 1.5cm tall head of white foam, made up of small-sized bubbles, yielding a frothy appearance. Retention is below average less than one minute, the head fading to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass and a small island of lacy foam resting atop the body of the beer. Lacing is good, with some thick and large dots, lines, and patterns clinging to all sides of the glass. Body is a bright, medium-dark golden yellow, with light bringing out bright golden yellow hues. Carbonation visible through the slightly hazy body (10% opacity), moderate in number and moving at a medium-pace.

Aroma is pleasant, of musty hay, slight apple and pear esters (reminding one that, after all, Kolsch uses an ale yeast), slight lemon citrus from hops, and a background of light pale malt sweetness.

Front of palate is of wet hay, lemon citrus, apple and pear ester, slight acetaldehyde, and a hearty pale malt sweetness. Mid-palate of grain, white bread, hearty pale malt sweetness, mild acetaldehyde, and grassy and lemon-like hops. Back of palate features wet hay, yeast, slight graininess, lemon-like and grassy hops, and acetaldehyde. Aftertaste of lemon, slight graininess, and mild bitterness.

Beer is medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, leading to a slightly fizzy, then foamy (3/4) and smooth (1/4) mouthfeel that's a bit overcarbonated for both this beer and the style. Closes dry, with light stickiness clinging to the palate and lips.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a clear pale green lemon yellow with faint white head.
S: Sweet and light caramel malt. Bananas and grass.
T: Very pleasant and stronger version of aroma. Bananas, hint of clove, lemongrass, sweet light caramel malt.
M: Light body. Silky smooth, soft, and slightly sticky sweet. Nice lingering on the palate too!
D: Extremely drinkable...the definition of a good session beer. This one surprised me in a big way...started out unassuming and finished extremely strong. Thanks to Kris for bringing this one back!
