Four Seasons Liquor - Morris, IL

Generator proudly shows of a brilliantly clear, mahogany body that shimmers with ruby highlights when backlit. Forming of the head took a hard pour but eventually made it to a finger in height with khaki foam. A little fizzle and crackle brings the head to nothing but a thin ring in short order. The quickly diminishing head takes away from the looks of this doppelbock.

The nose is big, malty, and complex. Toasted grains upfront with a little sweetness. Caramel picks up quickly along with a sweet neutralizing freshly husked graininess. Slightly bready toward the backend with a touch of both floral and spicy hops. Very mild fruity esters add yet more depth, soft plum mostly.

The flavor profile basically follows the nose step by step. Lightly roasted grains are fairly sweet upfront. Rich caramel washes through the middle before brown bread brings up the rear. The sweetness is very evenhanded and well done. Floral hoppiness wraps the malt in it's loving embrace. Good shit!

A full, robust, roundness weighs along the tongue. The finish is semi-dry and works well with the lingering, but soft, floral bitterness. The carbonation is firmly in the middle of the spectrum, a little tingling left along the tongue.

Generator is an excellent doppelbock right from my backyard. It's well rounded, clean, complex, and dangerously drinkable. Not often do you find expertly crafted German styles in the United States but Metropolitan manages to brew incredible, clean, crushable, German styles again and again.

L - brown hued with a nice ruby glow when held to light, creamy beige head sticks around for a bit
S - malty nose with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, grain, spicy aromatic hops
T - sweet toasted grain, brown sugar, burnt caramel, spicy grassy hop
F - creamy and smooth, finishes dry with a bite of pepperiness
O - very good American brewed doppelbock. A bit rough around the edges as I find the finish a bit more harsh than I'd like, otherwise it's solid.

Excited to find this new addition to Metropolitan bottles. Their German-styles have been pretty spot-on to style and I have high hopes that this one will be no less.

A -- Pours a clear, deep copper color with bright garnet highlights and a dense, long-lasting, light tan head.

S -- Earthy malts and peppery alcohol. There's some vague sulfur lingering and bready yeast.

T -- Taste is a little hot from alcohol up front, but there's great dark bread crust maltiness making up a rich backbone to this beer. Spicy, rather bitter for the style -- but not overly, hops balance out in the finish, along with peppery alcohol, but the good breadiness controls the aftertaste. Some mellow, slightly tart, dark fruit characters become apparent in the aftertaste as well and balance nicely with the sweetness of the malt.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a dry finish and full body.

O -- Where Sprecher's Premium Reserve Doppelbock flaunted its high ABV to the point of harshness, the Generator lets you know it's around, but puts up a sweet and flavorful front that lulls you into one more taste... and another, and...
