Appears a deep ruby red deep amber, large off white light khaki head forms thick and dwindles slow leaving behind speckled lacing. I guess the old brewer from Penn is up in Youngstown at the old B& O brewpub working it production style, I wonder what he is going to do now that Tom Pastorious is back at the helm in the Burgh.
Aroma is very muted mild sweetness and toasted malt character from the darker malts used in this Irish Red ale, a mild fruitiness with a sharp metallic mineral character pretty clean other than that.
Flavor is weird with a slight sliced apple tartness that dwindles and fades with roasted malt character. A touch of caramel but everything fades quickly and doesn't leave behind much on the palate. A grainy carbonated lifelessness with an almost rusty mineral flavor in each sip.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied carbonation is a bit much after half the 22 ounce portion is poured. I'm not a fan of the finish on this beer it's hard to tell why, just the way the flavors fade and finish grainy and off falling flat much like the new version of Penn Dark brewed at the Lion in Wilkes Barre, PA. Sorry Penn I had to throw that in there again!
Drinkability is pretty weak not a beer I'm yearning for it's pretty middle of the road for craft beer so far only three beers out from these guys I hope the other two do better for them.

Pours a rusty bright reddish color with a one-finger tan head that has average retention. The appearance is nice. Unfortunately, that's pretty much where it ends.
The aroma is rather faint. Sweet caramel malt mainly, along with a little cola. Slight acrid notes to it that are rather unpleasant.
The flavor starts with sweet malt, caramel and candy apple covering, but then it goes south and tastes like what happens when your stomach contents go north. You guessed it: vomit. There's also a little bit of rusty/metallic flavor, which I guess is fitting given the brewery's name. It's not too awful, but it's definitely off, and reminiscent of the Indian Wells flavor in a way, which is not a good thing, believe me.
Medium-bodied with average carbonation. No complaints really on the mouthfeel, although it doesn't exactly excel in this category.
As Snoop Dogg would say if he drank this beer, drizzain to the pizzour. Only finished 4oz or so before I couldn't take it anymore.

light brown color, hazelnut highlights are riddled throughout with a wonderful mix of colors. A smallish head of light tan then pops up from the bottom of the glass and reaches about a half an inch before settling back down again.
Aroma is of light caramel, roasted nuts, light touches of butterscotch like sugary notes. Warming brings out a very earthy and pronounced flavor to it. Really nice done but a touch light. This is my only complaint as it did not have the pop I was really looking for at the time

Being from the Youngstown area originally, i had to try this beer. i got a 22oz bottle and shared it with a lady. the head could be more sustained and no lacing. it is a handsome beer when poured. dark red, can't see through it too easily. the smell is delicious, a nice cereal grain to it, dusty in a good way. taste is more of the same, malty creamy, which brings me to the mouth feel, smooth with a crisp finish to it on the tounge. i could really drink this all night. if i were sitting in a bar in downtown youngstown, i know i'd have to be drinking heavily, this would definitly be a pint i'd be working on. lets turn youngstown around with beer!

Pours a hazy copper with a decent, cream-white head that sticks around for long enough. A good amount of lace. Haze not due to cold, and i'm pretty sure this isn't bottle-fermented, so i'm not sure what's going on here.
Aromas of some faint caramel malt, dry grain and some ripe fruit (banana?) followed by a bit of earthy hops.
More caramel malt in the flavor, as well as an earthier hop taste and some faint fruit.
Mouthfeel is a little too thin for comfort, though carbonation is about right.
Though unimpressive overall, this one's refreshing enough and a decent red ale for the price.

Appearance - Pours a 'rusty' amber orange that quickly settles to a very dark crimson red and brown. Opaque and full of brown hue. Fairly nice lacing with two fingers of frothy head.
Smell - Light hints of caramel and malts. Rather an unpleasant well water smell to it. A consistent dark fruit note in the background as well.
Taste - Surprisingly sour to start off with. That traditional red ale taste is masked by a funky sourness that is slightly tart on the tongue. The taste has light cherry and creamy properties as well.
Mouthfeel / Drinkability - I was surprised by this beers taste at first, and I really enjoyed it for the first couple of sips. But then things began to go downhill quickly. Soon, I could only taste alcohol and funk in every drink that I took. Which is odd, considering it's only 5.5% alcohol and does not hint whatsoever at being sour. Luckily, I really love sour beers. It isn't real sour or anything, but it will definitely fizz on your tongue due to it's medium body and high carbonation. As far as red ales go, this is towards the bottom of my list. But for $2.99 a bomber, this beer wasn't all that bad to just sit and drink a glass. I'm sitting here staring at the second half of the bomber, though. And it's random high ethanol notes and unpleasant fizzy tartness are off-putting me to drinking the rest. Not to put down Rust Belt, because I thought this beer was okay, but it begins to taste like bottled well water with a tablet of airborne, cherry throat spray and capsules of ethanol that randomly burst in your mouth.

Light aromas of caramel, toasted grains and fruit. Also a light metallic like aroma too. Really nothing there.
Taste is pretty unimpressive. The first sip reveled a slight sour twang which wasn't noticeable afterwards. Some really upfront fruity notes which dominate I think. Also some dark roasted malt flavors too. Really thin. Almost to the point that is feels watery.
Overall, I'd stay away from this one. Really nothing there. Tastes bland and unremarkable.

Pours a deep amber to reddish color with a light tan head. In the aroma, a small whiskey and caramel like malt. In the taste, a small caramel roast and a small taste of whiskey. A small bite and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry to sweet malt in the aftertaste. It is kind of all over and can't decide which way to go.

Poured into a snifter on 1/7/10
Dense ruby color with crimson highlights. Very nice, sharp color. 1/2 inch head dissipates quickly to a skim. Swirling brings it back, but retention remains weak. Sparse lacing.
Very doughy bread aroma with abundant yeast notes. In fact, it basically smells like unbaked bread dough. Notions of caramelized sugars waft about. Are there any hops in this critter? It's like the nose has a void where some hops should have been.
This tastes bad. As if the nose wasn't questionable enough, here is what I have to presume passes for acceptable flavor. At least the aromas was weird enough to be sort of interesting. This is just a just a bland mix of yeasty dough, watery caramel & something that I reckon is supposed to pass for hops. What a let down.
The feel is about as watery as you can get & still be medium bodied. Carbonation is very low. Ghosts of flavor that could have been haunt on the finish.
Each category is progressively worse. There are basically no redeeming qualities. No complexity. It tastes like flat, watered down Pepsi. Add some hops, a decent malt bill & an actual shot or two of rust water & this might be tolerable. Damn near a drain pour.

An eerie, near post-apocalyptic label; dark, blood red tones, foreboding.
Appearance - the beer is a reddish amber, like a dark iced tea. Three fingers of tan head fade back to about a quarter-inch and hold. A few strays rises of lace.
Aroma - slightly fruity and roasty at first, but settles into a bready, slightly sour aroma, even a breathy alcohol note with warming.
Taste - mild roasty grain, and just as mild of a hop kiss. The flavor is watery, lacking depth. I know it shouldn't be pegging the flavor registers necessarily, but this comes across as a Killian's Light or something. The lighter flavor allows the grain to win on the aftertaste as opposed to the roast character, a critical miss for me. The finish does it no harm but offers no help. The beautiful label art left me utterly disappointed with the taste. While I do notice some improvement with some warmth, this isn't a style that generally sits around in the glass.
Mouthfeel - it's too bad about the flavor, because the mouthfeel here is superb IMO. Very smooth for an Irish Red. Crisply carbonated for a fine, refreshing feel. A nice fluffy but creamy brew.
Drinkability - while I too salute the steel industries past of Mahoning Valley, I would guess the intensity of their laborers exceeded the intensity of this bottle's contents. Not a bad beer, just disappointingly average and light tasting.

A: Poured into pint glass. Nice deep ruby color. Very full tan head.
S: Mild with a bit of caramel and biscuits.
T: Tasted of biscuits but quickly finished off as bland and watery.
M: Started out with an average amount of carbonation and finished dry.
D: Average at best. Starts out real nice but finishes quickly and very mildly. Almost seems watered down at the end.
I stopped by a store looking for an Irish Red like Brian Boru. It's hard to find Irish Red's other than Sam Adams or Brian Boru around here. They didn't have Brian and I thought I'd try this.

Poured from a bomber sized bottle into a pint glass with an enormous head. Dark brown color with a small amount of carbonated bubbles coming to the top. Strong caramel malty flavor. Very flavorful beer. I am not going to have a hard time finishing this beer.

22oz bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint.
A - Pours an aptly-fitting rusted orange color that is translucent for the most part. I guess if I went to Youngstown, this would be the color of their river. About a finger and a half worth of light tan head with pretty long retention to it. The lacing, however, is very faint and sparse, only covering a small majority of real estate.
S - The nose on the Rusted Red is inoffensive, but minimal at best. A moderate amount of malts give off a slight caramel and toffee, and a touch of roast, but from there, the only additional contribution is a pinch of dark fruits here and there in the form of candied raisins and even wisps of banana intermittently.
T - Unfortunately, the disappointment continues into the taste, as there is just a bare minimum amount of flavor going on here. It begins promising, with the caramel, candied fruit, and some breadiness, but it falls off flat and from there it's a bland watery taste. I am getting almost no hops here, and the mid-palate on is just completely devoid of any new flavors.
M - Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with low carbonation. The lifeless flavors pair well with the thin body and watery feeling left behind after this beer. Pretty dry finish.
D/O - Drinkability is low. Don't get me wrong, it's not a beer that is hard to drink, it's just that it doesn't offer anything that gives me much enjoyment drinking. I think it would fit well for a kegger or a sporting event, but for a beer to sit down with a savor? Not this one.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a ruby color and a cloudy consistency. There was a thin amount of foamy head that quickly dissipated. Not much lacing.
S: An underplayed, almost faint aroma of malt, caramel and bread.
T: Tasted of caramel and malt up front with a touch of biscuit, but the finish was thin and watery. Way too uneven.
M: An OK amount of carbonation with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.
D: Not a horrible beer, just not particularly memorable.

Pours a hazy amber color with a skim head that leaves little to no lacing present. The aroma is faint and it smells like a caramel malt or sweet malt. The taste is of a caramel malt backbone with some hints of sweet malt and nuttiness. The mouthfeel is low carbonatation and slightly creamy. The drinkability is okay, the taste is average. You could drink it absolutely, but it doesnt do much to make you crave and want it.

The appearance of this beer is a deep and rich looking reddish brown color. The head vanished extremely quickly and left no lacing or residual head. The smell is of sugary sweetness. The flavor is a hearty and full flavored caramel and strawberry twizzler like flavor. It lingers on the tongue for quite a while but doesn't seem to evolve too much. It tastes rather musty in the beginning. The mouthfeel is a little more oily and thick than other Irish reds I have had. I enjoy it. This is a a simple ale but I feel that it is one of their better beers. It is rather one dimensional but still extremely enjoyable.

Bomber bottle with nice graphics on the label, lots of stuff to read.
Pours a dark copper, soapy off-white head soon disappears. Smell is fruitcake, sweet and bready. Taste starts off a little bitter and morphs into toasty mellow malts. Finishes bitter, but also thin and a bit dry. Decent red ale, but I'm wanting just a bit more body in this one.

Appearance: Pours a clear ice tea brown with a thin cap that pancakes the liquid; very little lace
Smell: Loads of caramel, with a grainy element underneath
Taste: Caramel, up front, with the grainy flavors arriving by mid-palate; the finish is rather aqueous
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with low to moderate carbonation; rather flabby
Drinkability: Easy to drink and a nice crossover beer; the flavors are on-style but the mouthfeel problems need to be fixed for this beer to be deserving of a higher score

A: Pours a dark amber color with some reddish hues throughout. Provides a thick tan foam head with moderate retention. Some spotty lacing.
S: Some mild dark fruits and bread. Does not get more intense and more flavors are not revealed as it warms.
T: Starts off bready and grainy and that taste lasts throughout. There is some very light dark fruit such as prunes or raisins that comes through toward the back end. Not offensive taste, just not enough of it.
M: A thin mouthfeel with nothing really left on the palate to savor.
O: My first Rust Belt Brew. Was intrigued by the art work for the brew. The taste was not offensive just extremely mild. Needs more flavor.

Rust Belt Rusted River Irish Red Ale was a dull brown color with a one finger beige head that showed little retention.
The aroma was that of a copper penny, which was at least consistent with the rust belt image, in my mind.
The taste was hardly there at all. There was some malt, so light I couldn't pin it down any closer. Low on sweet and not a bit of hops to be tasted. I did find a diet cola after taste that did not help the flavor at all.
The mouth feel was somewhere between light and medium bodied, with low carbonation.
Drinkability was not good; I will finish the bomber, but don't really want too.
In a word: Insipid. The only other Irish red's I've had (Brian Boru & Conway's Irish), left me expecting a lot more, though I do realize we are not talking about 3F or GL here.
Late note: Even though the suggested serving temperature was 40-45 degrees, I found the flavor and mouth feel to have improved as it warmed even more. Unfortunately, not enough to save it.

This beer pours a deep ruby color with a full pillowy tan head. The aroma is a bit mild with nice caramel malts on the nose and a touch of toasted biscuits. Not much in the way of flavor, mostly just toasted biscuits. The finish is a tad short and sweet.
