Poured out of a growler...

Very dark. Head dissipates quickly, but it laces nicely on my glass. Usual coffee, and chocolate tastes. Overall a very solid stout. Very smooth going down, hence the 5% abv. I enjoyed this very much, and will look this up again.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with brown hues; no head, no lacing. The aromas are full of subtle hints of chocolate malts. There's a also a subtle expresso aroma. Now the flavors start off bold and promising, but it becomes somewhat old pretty quickly. It starts off with a blast of roasted black coffee. It really seems to dominate. It's pretty bitter and lacks a sweetness to balance it out. More chocolate malts. There's also a touch of anise and smoke. Once again, the flavors are there but don't exactly follow through. Mouthfeel is very fizzy, almost too much carbonation. Very light and thin. Alcohol goes unnoticed, so it's easy to drink a few if you choose.

This one lacks depth and character. But some coffee lovers might enjoy this one.

Bottle poured into my stemmed Allagash glass.

The appearance is the typical black with a nice head that is off-white/mocha in color. The head lingers quite a while due to the vigorous pour and that is where the 4 on appearance comes from: the head. The aroma is of milky and bitter chocolate. The flavors are smoky and burnt up front which gradually gives way to a bitter flavor that lingers and in the end coalesces with a slight milk shake/chocolate flavor. The mouthfeel seems pretty standard: lower carbonation and a nice medium body. This isn't a bad stout, but the flavors don't come together too well on it either. They seem very divided and the transfer from one to the other is not smooth. It has the typical stout flavors, but they aren't well balanced or rounded. This is, in my opinion, a mediocre American Stout.

A 22 oz bomber bottle from Vintage Estate.

A: The stout is black, yup. Not sure much more is needed to convey the beer's appearance. A white head, thin even on the first pour, never amounts to more than a thin band.

S: Roasted, burnt malts paired with semisweet chocolate. The result is a bitter, dark aroma that brings lighter, toasted aromas of bread and nuts.

T: Thin and undercarbonated, the stout doesn't get off to a good start. The dark roasted flavors are there, but without the bubbles it lacks power. Chocolate and coffee follow, picking up the pace a bit. Generally thin, the body doesn't do much with our without the carbonation. Passable as a stout.

M: The flavors are there, chocolate, coffee and toasted breads, but they don't come together nicely. The low carbonation levels don't do the stout any favors. Average at best.
