Appearance: pours a dark brown color. a finger off a tannish head that slowly fades to a spotty lacing. mostly opaque but blood red around the edges.

Smell: belgian yeast, dark fruit, a hint of alcohol and just a little bit of spice.

Taste: opens up with cloves and dark fruit. followed by a earthy spicy taste with a hint of lighter fruits. pepper is evident, along with a little bit of cinnamon. very complex profile

Mouthfeel: drinks slightly creamy, leaves a stickiness, warmth of alcohol and spice

Overall: very interesting. it really pushes the boundaries of what i consider a dubbel. overall its decent. i like it but it falls way short of what i consider a great dubbel. i was looking for some brett character and can't find anything that i would contribute solely to the brett.

December 26th, 2013 - New Belgium goes wild in their LoF Wild Dubbel, a dark, dark brown beer with a great, thick soupy head. It's like a smooth tan bubble bath, before I poke my nose in there. Piercing the outer crust, I get a spicy scent, like a strange, exotic spice shop, with glue, stone, and floral tones, with lots of scented soap. In a nutshell (though not smelling of one), it smells nothing like your usual dubbel, typically rich in those wood and cheese notes. And the taste is similarly deviant. I blame these mysterious sounding berries. There's dubbel notes way, way underneath, especially with traces of fig, dark berries and such. But all of that is eclipsed by a peppery zest that runs through the whole of the flavor. The end features touches of bubble gum - possibly a product of the schisandta, with a sharp, floral note on the end. Not the traditional stuff, but I knew that when I saw the Lips of Faith circle rise high up on the bottle.

Slightly sweeter take on the traditional dubbel, a little bit lighter weight as well. Still has the fruity character of the old country style, but toned down for the American palate., which is not a bad thing.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a Becher glass.

A: Voluminous head tops the mulberry-red, clear beer.
S: It's tart. Tart, but fruity and deep. Lactic and delicious. Potent.
T/M: Hm. There are a lot of conflicting flavours going on...Initially malty (with a gingerbread spice), then fruit, ever-so-light bitterness, then spice again. The aftertaste is dryish, but not quite enjoyable. Robust.
O: It smelled so sour, but it tasted nothing like that. Weird, and confusing, but not unpleasant.

Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing are good. Aroma of Belgian yeast with dark fruits and slight funky edge. Taste is very similar to aroma. Belgian yeasts with dark fruits but with a very slight funky edge. I was expected a little more sourness with it called "Wild 2", but I guess that doesn't mean a wild ale. Very good nonetheless. Smooth aftertaste, kind of creamy. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Had on tap at the Bryant Lake Bowl (from notes): It arrives dark amber with a slight haze and a thin foam collar. Fruit, malt and banana aromas. Banana, bread and fruit flavors with some pepper and herbs. Medium to medium full body, medium carbonation.
