Served in a cervoise at Tap House - Des Plaines.
My second new bar today that happened to be a Tap House, and this one has a New Belgium Lips of Faith tap takeover of sorts going on. Oh, and Svengoolie's here, too. I like this place. Anyway, this stuff pours a clear amber-gold topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises sweet malts, earthy pepper greenery (like sniffing the outside of a fresh pepper), light Belgian yeast, and a touch of allspice. The taste leads with the sweet malts and spicy Belgian yeast, then some decent pepper heat bubbles through. This heat, when at its zenith, matches surprisingly well with the surrounding beer, rather than trying to outdo it. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, a bit of a surprise here, in that I enjoyed this beer and the interplay of pepper heat and Belgian-y base. Not bad.
