22 oz bottle, best by 6/8/14. Pours clear ruby amber with a monstrous creamy white head (nitro-like) that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is spicy rye malts and piney hops with some tropical fruits coming out.

The flavor is sweet bready malts with some spicy rye and some tropical fruit and a big floral piney bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin and watery.

Overall, nice hop and rye, just really thin and watery.

S-Spicy rye notes dominate, complemented by grainy malt. Earthy hop notes are present at a low medium level. Orangey hop notes noted as the beer warms. No esters, no alcohol, no DMS.

A-Pour is a crystal clear honey amber. Huge foamy slightly off white head has huge retention and lots of lacing.

T-Very alt forward with a strong rye presence. Grainy malt notes as well. Hop bitterness is medium high. Floral hop flavors are very nice in the mid palate, working in nice harmony with the rye. Finish is smooth and moderately bitter, with nice lingering hoppiness. A light hint of alcohol warming in the finish as well, but at a medium low level.

M-Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. slightly creamy. No astringency.

O-A very tasty rye beer. Strong rye character is well balanced by floral hops. Smooth finish is very pleasant.

Pours into an impy nonic a full rich bronze with a tightly formed creamy-like one finger head,great color and a great head.Some sharp rye and pine resin in the nose although it doesn't really hit hard,still quite nice.The head gives off a creaminess in the mouth and the beer has a nice slick feel.Some nuttiness hits upfront on the palate along with mild sharpness from the rye with some lactic notes that linger in the aftertaste,the hops are not in your face but give some resiny and grapefruit-like notes.A solid rye IPA,a little more punch on the palate and this would be off the charts,love the look and feel.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a New Belgium Globe glass. Bottle says enjoy by June 8th, 2014.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A spicy and juicy hop froward aroma with good hints of citrus, pine, and rye spice. Upfront mix of earthy, floral, citrus, and herbal hops with some hints of grass and spicy pine resin. Citrus hop hints of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, mango, tangerine, and kiwi. Toasted malt with hints of sweet caramel, grains, biscuit, rye spice, yeast, and cracker. Also some hints of pepper. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely juicy and spicy hop forward taste with good notes of citrus, pine, and rye. Earthy notes of grassy hops and some herbal and floral notes. Spicy pine resin. Citrus fruit notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, kiwi, and tangerine. Light notes of pepper spice. Solid sweet malt presence with notes of caramel, rye spice, grains, biscuit, cracker, and yeast. A very solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely juicy, oily, and somewhat sticky. Finishes fairly dry.

Overall: A very solid take on a IPA. Good mix of citrusy and piney hops with a nice kick of rye.

On tap at the Cork & Tap (SC).

Clear medium amber with a decent head that leaves little lacing.

Feel: Medium-light body with near medium carbonation; seems too thin.

Aroma: herbal/floral hops with faint malts.

Flavor: hops, floral and herbal, with well proportioned spicy notes from the rye.

O: a good version of style, but not quite up to New Belgium's standard.

16oz glass, at Craft Beer Market in Calgary, during the New Belgium Alberta release party, from notes.

This beer appears a clear, bright bronzed amber hue, with pervasive red highlights, and one finger of weakly foamy, and mostly soapy ecru head, which leaves some random paint splotch lace around the glass as it quickly abates.

It smells of generic citrus peel, musty, somewhat dank pine resin, spicy and grainy rye malt, a soft dark breadiness, and further earthy, leafy hops. The taste is meaty caramel malt, gritty, grainy, and spicy rye malt, bipartisan toffee, more vegetal dank, and earthy, leafy, and piney hops.

The carbonation is soft, mostly just a tame frothiness, the body medium weight, and rather fruity in its softly approachable smoothness. It finishes off-dry, with the spicy grain, citrus fruit, and musty, leafy forest floor pine notes still keepin' on keepin' on.

A pleasant enough rye-based IPA, the expected metrics all there in spades - spicy malt meets West Coast hops. Not something that I would normally say "hey, what a splendid idea!" about, but this seems strangely agreeable, in its off-set and subtly off-putting nature.

Pours a clean amber, with a huge head of bone-white carbonation. Thick wall of lace, too.

Nose is crispy rye malts and fresh citrus hops. Quite appealing!

Taste is sharp (no doubt from the rye), with a bitter hops finish. There's a complex combination of hop flavors (citrus, pine, and some acidic notes) here, playing alongside the spice-edged rye malts.

Overall, a solid and very strong showing from New Belgium's Hop Kitchen series. I liked this one.

7.5% ABV, Enjoy by 08JUN14

A - The iconic glass' nucleation point keeps carbonation steadily streaming through the beautiful copper, clear beer, which feeds the tall and lasting off-white head.

S - Hops and rye collaborate on a sharp nose that starts with freshly squeezed citrus juice before making the switch to earthy pine notes that compliment the spicy rye nicely.

T - Aromatically, the beer is potent but, in flavor even the sharper notes of both hops and rye mellow out with some clean smoothness. Caramel sweetness washes over the earthy, spicy rye that, like the aroma, is a wonderful compliment to the complex hop profile of earth and citrus characteristics.

M - New Belgium's RyePA begins with a smooth feel and soft, almost creamy carbonation tickle that accelerates to a firm rye sharpness and hop bitterness on the tongue that lingers well after the finish.

O - The aggressive aromatic intro tricks the brain into expecting a pretty hoppy and sharp rye flavor but the taste, in combination with the creamy-ish smooth mouthfeel, is considerably more mellow with caramel sweetness offsetting the citrusy, earthy hops and spicy rye. A drinkable, tasty beer all around!

Poured into a Dogfish Spiegelau glass. Label says 08JUN14

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 3/4 inch beige head that retains well before falling to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of billowy surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves clots behind.

S- I read a review where someone was comparing this to Rampant and I agree it does have a very similar earthy, musty hop aroma but with a spicy kick of rye.

T- Tastes like Rampant too but there's, once again, that sharp, spicy rye flavor that accentuates the hops very well. I will say it's not as bitter as Rampant, which is fine and, in exchange, there's a bit more of a malt presence.

M- This is where the beer definitely differs from Rampant. It's a bit more viscous and tingly from the rye. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- Though there are striking similarities to Rampant, this definitely qualifies as its own unique beer and not just "Rampant done with rye." I will say I don't prefer this to Rampant, especially due to it costing more per ounce (not to mention it's also not as strong) but I would definitely revisit it if I saw it on-tap somewhere.
