Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a New Belgium Globe glass. Bottle says enjoy by June 8th, 2014.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A spicy and juicy hop froward aroma with good hints of citrus, pine, and rye spice. Upfront mix of earthy, floral, citrus, and herbal hops with some hints of grass and spicy pine resin. Citrus hop hints of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, mango, tangerine, and kiwi. Toasted malt with hints of sweet caramel, grains, biscuit, rye spice, yeast, and cracker. Also some hints of pepper. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely juicy and spicy hop forward taste with good notes of citrus, pine, and rye. Earthy notes of grassy hops and some herbal and floral notes. Spicy pine resin. Citrus fruit notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, kiwi, and tangerine. Light notes of pepper spice. Solid sweet malt presence with notes of caramel, rye spice, grains, biscuit, cracker, and yeast. A very solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely juicy, oily, and somewhat sticky. Finishes fairly dry.

Overall: A very solid take on a IPA. Good mix of citrusy and piney hops with a nice kick of rye.

On tap at the Cork & Tap (SC).

Clear medium amber with a decent head that leaves little lacing.

Feel: Medium-light body with near medium carbonation; seems too thin.

Aroma: herbal/floral hops with faint malts.

Flavor: hops, floral and herbal, with well proportioned spicy notes from the rye.

O: a good version of style, but not quite up to New Belgium's standard.

Serving type: on-tap

Reviewing from notes after having this one way back on March 24th, 2014. Enjoyed out of a 22 oz brown bomber with an 'enjoy by' date of 6/8/14. Poured into a Speigelau IPA-specific glass... or should I say "Rye-P-A" glass? [ba-dum ching] Anyway...

Appearance - Pours a caramel-tinted burnt ochre color with brassy amber highlights, pretty clear throughout, with little to no haze. Atop the body is a tan colored head that is composed of a mesh of superfine bubbles, almost like champagne head, but with far more staying power and far less evaporation as the bubbles expand. Retention is quite good, with the foam lingering for quite some time before fading away and leaving a moderate amount of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell - Not as powerful as I might have hoped, but notes of spicy rye grain waft to my olfactories alongside a healthy bit of herbal, dominated by pine, and a trailing bit of citrus zest to provide a little bit of pungency. This is one rye IPA that, based on the smell, could easily trend towards the "rye beer" end of the spectrum. The specialty grain leads the charge, with it's hoppy aroma companions flanking on the wings.

Taste - Much the same in the taste that was suggested by the smell. Pretty strong notes of rye, with spiciness and that rye kind of sourness--like a darker sourdough--being front and center. Orange zest and just a hint of grapefruit pith provides some bitterness. The pine resin that was part of the initial aroma is also present here, but it seems to bind to the rye characteristics, again contributing to more of a rye beer impression than an IPA. Maybe I'm just used to IPAs that blast you with an assault of tropical, citrus bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and moderate carbonation, with a slightly bitter finish with hints of grain in the aftertaste.

Overall, a pretty good beer, but certainly far from my favorite of the Hop Kitchen series by New Belgium. A solid brew that I probably wouldn't purchase again, but well worth the amazing price they've been putting on this series. $4.50 for a bomber is pretty damn good. I completely agree with the style designation on this site, in spite of New Belgium's apparent belief that it's an IPA.

A: Pours from a capped bomber a slightly hazed amberish orange with a solid 1-finger thick white head with good retention which yields rings and splotches of lace.

N: Oranges, tangerines, grapefruit citrus, mango and passion fruit tropicals, some pine, faint bready malts.

T: Spicy rye malts with some citrusy and piney hops. Bready and slightly dank.

M: Moderate body and medium carbonation. Finishes dry, bitter, malty and rye spicy.

O: Fairly inexpensive at $4.99, but just meh with a nice nose. Consumed 4 days past the enjoy by date (6/8/14).

Picked up a bomber from BevMo on Memorial Day for $4.99. Enjoy by 06/08/2014.

Beer poured a less than clear orange with a decent white head.

Nose is malt based with light hints of citrus.

Taste is pretty well balanced. Malt backbone with the rye spiciness is very nice. Hops are not huge but lend a touch of lemon zest and pine.

Mouthfeel drinks like a double ipa. Carbonation is lower, malt bill is bigger, finish is smooth.

Overall this is a tasty brew. I find myself drawn to the rye spice style of ipa...very enjoyable at a decent price!
