32 oz growler into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark ruby color, one that's fairly hazy as well. The head is around two fingers high, with an off-white shade. Retention is quite good for a sour, and the creamy texture leaves an attractive collar around the glass (no lacing, though). (3)

Smell: A whole lot of stuff is happening here. It starts off with a solid nose-twitching sourness, but afterwards it unfolds in many (cohesive) directions. First I pick up some of the whiskey barrel, then it develops some vanilla touches, and soon after some chocolaty, faintly roasty malts come through. There are even kisses of leather here and there. Did I mention how much is going on with this brew? Yeah, it deserves a second mention. (4)

Taste: Immediately, tartness envelops the palate. The approach is more lactic than acetic. Afterwards, the malt base appears with subtle chocolate notes, and the barrel finishes it off. The barrel and whisky influence is bang-on - there, but not ridiculous. In fact, as I drink more of it, the sourness calms down some more, even to the point where it *aaaaalmost* resembles a barrel-aged porter. Disappointments? Well, I'd like a bit more blackberry, but its influence is limited to the flavoring of the whiskey barrels, so I'll let that slide. Yeah, it's tough for me to find nits to pick on this - it's only down to that unspeakable X factor that keeps it from getting an even higher score. (4.25)

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is quite low: perhaps it's the style, or perhaps it's the growler condition. Still, it fits the mouthfeel due to its combination of tannic dryness and a body which isn't overly full. Not even a wisp of alcohol comes through. Rich AND easy to drink? Yeah, this one's a total danger. (4.25)

Overall: Let it be said that while a lot of New Belgium's mainline of beers (and even most of the LoF series) are quite average, they tend to brew kick-ass sour ales as well. This being no exception. It's bigger and sweeter than the norm, but that just allows more complexity to come through. Simply put, I'm loving this. (4.25)
