Poured from a 12oz bottle into an etched New Belgium Globe Glass. Served as per bottle instructions at 50-55 degrees.

A- Pours a mahogany/amber hue with a nice fluffy white head which lingers and laces nicely.

S- Smells of yeast and spice with a solid fruit background (a delicious ripe banana scent is most prominent), also get some hints of mild phenolic

T- Delicious. Malt forward with a strong fruit presence (again banana is most noticeable). Some bread is there too along with the creamy phenolic. You can tell it's 7% abv as it has a little alcohol bite to it

M- Medium bodied with a little creaminess to coat the tongue. Low carbonation

D- VERY drinkable. An awesome value if you are looking for that Belgian Dubbel taste without the cost of it actually being from Belgium. Impressive brew.

Pours a clear, deep amber color with a small white head that leaves little lacing on the glass.

Smells of a fruity aroma and a bit of yeast spice.

Tastes of sweet fruits followed by some spice. Caramel malt is evident and gives the fruit the sweetness. Fruits are raisins and bananas. Notes of clove dominate the spice.

Mouthfeel is medium-full with an effervescent amount of carbonation.

12 oz bottle with a best before date of 08OCT10. Pours a very clear, light caramel color with a voluminous 3 fingers worth of light tan foam. Retention is decent, but the lacing is ridiculous...very nice looking beer.

Hmmm, pretty impressive nose as well. The Belgian yeast is showcased nicely here. Deep breadiness and yeasty spices come through, cinnamon and nutmeg almost. There is some fruitiness, but not a whole lot. Kind of like a freshly baked loaf of cinnamon raisin bread. Plenty of sweet maltiness here as well, similar to a Skor candy bar.

Bready yeast flavors mingle with some raisin-like fruit notes to give a pretty nice Belgian taste. There is more of a piney hop presence than some Dubbels I have had from across the pond, but that is accentuated by more of a toasty maltiness than a sweet one. Still has some candi sugar sweetness, but does not seem as full and creamy as maybe a SB Pater 6. Still an immensely delicious American version of a dubbel and quite a surprise coming from New Belgium. I like it.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip. It pours a beautiful amber/red color. A 2 inch off-white head forms and reduces to a thick and full coverage lacing. Carbonation is readily visible and no sediment.

The aroma is a good blend of banana and yeasty components with some coriander and a solid dose of fruity sweetness.

The taste seemed just a bit weak but nice flavoring including a yeast banana bread flavor that includes walnuts. There is a dark fruit maltiness that gives a nice blend overall. A hint of alcohol is also present.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and almost thin. The carbonation is mild and quick to dissipate off of the palate. A nice dryness lingers at the finish.

Overall, this is a decent beer and well worth having. I could easily have more as the ABV is not destructive and the flavors although not particularly intense, also make it fairly drinkable.

This abbery poured bright amber/orange with a good zied fluffy head. The retention was pretty good, as was the spotty lace.

The nose was excellent. It was sweet and spicy, packed full or pear, coriander, ripe banana, walnuts, and especially yeasty tones.

A bit more of the spiciness and pepper comes out in the flavor. Tons of yeast and fruit (banana, pear, and even cherry) dominate the mouth. More recessed notes of coriander, alcohol, brown sugar, and caramel. The finish was clean and had somewhat of a peanut flavor. Interesting and awesome.

The body was quite full, and the feel was excellent, mouth-coating and smooth. A bit of a cottony/fluffy character and crisp carbonation kept a full body feeling light and almost weightless.

This beer is packed with flavor, and does everything well. Good work NB.

12oz bottle poured into a thick glass chalice.

A- Abbey pours an interesting sunset red, topped with a soft fluffy and bubbly light tan head. Aggressive pour into the chalice gives it a classic Belgian look, but slightly softened and Americanized. Lots of visible carbonation, and the great head leaves some patchy lace levels behind.

Color is slightly cartoonish, too bright and neon, but other than that, this beer looks great.

S- Fruits and bread smells, fruits like plums, apricot pits, overripe bananas. Spices, maybe some coriander? A very live and active smelling beer. Belgian yeast gives it that bright character found in so many Belgian style beers.

T- The taste is not very strong here, definitely sublte. Richer malt tastes lay the foundation, spritzier hops give ample bitterness and the live yeast provides a rounder and more complete flavor profile. A full beer, encompassing a lot of flavors; dark fruits, bread-like malts, spices and hops and slightly creamy yeast tartness. Hints of honey deep in there. Several layers and true to style. I'm glad I took the time to explore this beer more, I've never actually TASTED this beer, I always just drank it out of a bottle.

An unusually subtle and rewarding beer brewed local, this was underrated for several years by yours truly. Now rediscovered as a really great beer, this may have piqued my interest in more serious dubels in the future...?

M- Medium-light body and thinner feel. Nice viscosity and spreadable, evenly moved around and not very sticky at all. Could be somewhat fuller in my opinion, just a little too thin for me.

D- High marks for drinkability. The many layers to this are integrated so smoothly that palate fatigue is no worry here. Little residual stickiness and aftertaste, lighter body makes laid back day sipping easy and rewarding.

As other reviewers have stated, do not expect this to compare with the true abbey ales, and you will not be disappointed. Pours nice enough with a clear copper color and large head. A lot of sticky lacing is left on the glass. Yeasy aroma with hints of spice. Some earthiness as well. A bit one dimensional in the flavor with just the spice coming through. Hides the ABV very well. The body could be larger but is nicely carbonated. A good value for a middle-of-the-road dubbel. Just do not expect something great.

pours a clear dark copper with a small beige head that dissipates quickly, and not much lacing.

smell is slightly sour, roasted malt, some caramel, grape and prune, a little spice in the back.

taste is a tad watery, roasted nuts, dark fruit (prune, raisin, etc...), some spice, some caramel, and malt, ends smooth.

12 oz bottle from my trip out west over christmas

app: A wonderful blend of dark amber, ruby, and garnet. Fluffy tan head that fades to a nice cap and thick lace.

Smell: Yeasty, sour funk. Sweet fruitcake like aroma. Darm rum. And a healthy dose of herbal hops.

Taste: A slight fruitiness and zesty yeast quickly followed by an earthy bitterness from the hops and roasted malts. A bit of tobacco flavor which is rather off-putting. Rather bland and unidimensional in the flavor department

Medium plus mouthfeel with low carbonation. Perhaps not enough secondary fermentation to produce the necessary carbonation.

I've had this before and it tasted better...perhaps a bad bottle?

My review stands until I get out to CO again

Poared into a chimay goblet, yeilding a 2 finger head that died down quickly hith very little lacing. Color is a very nice dark red.

The smell was very nice, yeasty and belgium-esk, but dissipiered after three drinks.

the taste is very good, exspetially consitering the 6.99 a six pack price. It tastes just like it should; this is an average, sterio-typical belgian ale. It does not stand up to any "abbey" ale that is actually from belgium, so dont exspect it to. With that said and considering the price and avaliability ( we cannot get any real belgians in MT other than chimay red if your lucky and in a big "city"), the flavor is well balanced mixture of fruty/banana type belgian yeast and malt goodness. Not to sweat and not to yeasty.

Moreover it is incredably drinkable. Hides the 7% very well and no syrpyness or overly yeast after taste like that left in your mouth with new belgiums Trippel.
All in all i would recomend this if you want a belgium ale with out spending a lot of money. Remember you pay for what you get, so dont exspect magic; but you do get a well balanced, very drinkable belgian style ale that has all the charatoristics that one looks for in this style without braking the bank.

After enjoying some 2 Below, I promised myself that the next beer from New Belgium that I would try would be Abbey. Very good call.

Mahogany body with ruby trim topped by a fat finger of off-white foam; modest duration and lacing. Nice malty, spicy aromas--plenty of clove, some pear, candied apple. It would just be nice if the nose were bolder.

The taste, however, IS. Lots of fruit, with pear, apple, and a hint of cherry carrying the day, with the spice reserved for the finish--mainly glove and a dash of ginger. Sweet but far from cloying. I am a bit surprised how much I like this; I like it a lot.

This is without question one of the best domestic Dubbels I've had, taking a place behind Ommegang and Goose Island's Pere Jacques--no shame there--on the list. My favorite beer from New Belgium without question. Excellent.

Served at the said temperature, just by coincidence- 50 degrees. Pours 1 finger fluffy tan airy head. When held to the light its a blood red peach, not too sure about this color.

Fairly unfragrant dark fruits.

Light dark fruit, somewhat sweet with a mildly tart finish. Im not expecting a triple or anything but low fruity taste.

Low bubbly mouthfeel. Moderatly smooth.

Not the most drinkable. Not the least, but Its not my favorite ever. Worth a try. A little too much on the fruity side.

A - Deep amber/mahogany in color with a nice fluffy off-white head.

S - Wow, very sweet and aromatic. Toasty malt with hints of fruit and sugar.

T - Malty, sweet, smooth. Great beer.

M/D - Very smooth with little carbonation. Perfect maltiness and sugary sweetness. Recommended for sure.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

A: Dark Amber with a tinge of gold in color. Small head that lingers a bit.

S: Smells like bananas and a sweet malt. Very similar to an Amber Ale, with fruity esters.

T: What a beautiful malt taste! Very nice on the palette, with notes of Apple, banana, and even citrus hitting the tongue. Not bitter at all, but instead is a sweet beer.

M: Very good - not too thin, not too thick. It could stand to be a little thicker, though it does do an awesome job of covering up the higher amount of alcohol.

A: Rich, dark amber. Lots of lacing.

S: Fruity and sweet aroma, with some caramel.

T: Fruity as well - a bit of cherry and plum in each sip. Enjoyably malty.

M: Medium, lots of carbonation.

D: High drinkability. There's really not much to complain about with this ale - it's a solid, relatively easy to acquire belgian style ale.

Poured from into a chalice in Aspen, Colorado with lamb and clam linguine.

A: cognac-like with excellent lacing.

S: strong smell of Belgian sugar and light fruityness (plums).

T: really pleasant taste with strong stone fruits, sugar and a little bit of chocolate.

M/D: excellent mouthfeel with good alcohol balancing. Aftertaste is very smooth, an enjoyable experience.

bottle into pint. poured aggessively for a thick, rocky, tan head. beer has little retention but some nice lacing. its a darkish red/brown, but fairly transparent. im getting belgian yeast, malts, and clove on the nose. taste is malty up front (caramel sweet), some earthy yeast qualities, with an underscore of spice that becomes more prominent towards the middle and finish. some fruit sweetness underneath that reminds me of cherries. finish is clove like and medicinal, and a bit warm. for an abbey its not all that complex, not getting much of the fruity sweetness that i expected based on other abbeys i've had. mouthfeel is nice, not highly carbonated and about medium bodied. certainly not thick. this is one of the easier drinking abbeys around, drinkabilility is certainly a strong point for this one and i enjoyed that. overall a pretty good abbey, not the best but well worth a go.

Pours a clear ruby or dark amber color with a nice inch and a half off white head. There's excellent head retention and a nice bit of lacing as well.

The aroma is quite nice. Right away I get some ripe banana and cherry. There's a light caramel presence as well as a bit of a phenolic aroma. There's a slight yeastiness as well. Overall just really pleasing.

The taste is pretty nice. Again nice notes of cherry and banana. There's a raw grain feel to the malting that gives a nice bready note. There's some caramel as well. It's quite pleasing.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a high dose of fine bubbled carbonation

Drinkability is high. The flavor profile is quite pleasing and feels fairly authentic to a Belgian ale. The ABV is moderately high but well incorporated and easily managed. I really dig this beer and I'm glad I revisited it.

NB Abbey simply put is a great daily beer for this style. Recently purchased for $6.99 for 6 and with a 7% ABV, it packs a great bang for your buck. On top of the value is a great tasting beer. Bread, some Banana, with some sweetness. Nice drinkability...If you like this style, you have to try this one!

Presentation: 12oz brown pop top bottle, nice label, bottle is modelled on the Westmalle bottle shape, which is kind of cool. Best-by date marked.

Appearance: Dark amber brew with burnt orange highlights when held up to the light. Clarity is remarkably bright; I poured carefully, but with this being bottle-conditioned, I'd expect at least some sediment here. This pours with a fairly large ivory cap which soon fades to a thick film with decent persistence.

Smell: Nice aromas. This is chocolately and bready, with big notes of sweet dark fruit (raisins) and some dark sugar as well.

Taste: Mild chocolate, toasty grains, some mild-medium fruitiness (almost a hint of banana here, rather than the raisin suggested in the aroma). Just a slight hint of alcohol present. Sweet throughout, but ends slightly drier, with a bit of hop bitterness. Bitterness is a bit high for the style (IMO), but mellows a bit as the brew warms. Still would like just a tad less. Also, a bit of rum raisin emerges with the increasing temperature.

Mouthfeel: On the light side of medium bodied

Drinkability: Fairly high.

Conclusion: Nice American Dubbel. Not the best I've had (Ommegang still has that claim) but it's pretty good, especially considering you can get a six pack for 8-9 bucks.

A: Amber/brown with a thin head that dissipates quickly leaving pretty good lacing

S: Malty and sweet with banana/clove aromas; also a biscuity smell that is prevalent

T: The sweet maltiness is dominant upfront but not overwhelming; the banana and clove flavors from the yeast strain are also there

F: carbonation is okay but slightly thin; there is a nice mouth coating though

D: Quite drinkable, especially on a cold night . . . it will warm you right up.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A: Pours out a clear, golden chestnut amber and topped with a thick and foamy two inch thick head. Nice little ropes of carbonation bubbling up from the bottom of the glass, showing a little life in the beer. Nice curtains of Belgian lace decorate the wall of the glass.

D: Lovely, super sweet and super malty. Dark fruits, caramel apple, cherries with a bit of nuttiness and some candi sugary-ness.

T/MF: Tastes much like the smell, wonderfully sweet, sugary maltiness balanced by a subtle fruitiness of fresh cut apples, faint cherries, golden raisins and an underlying nuttiness that keeps the sugary sweetness from becoming overly pronounced. Mouthfeel is solid, chewy but not overly thick, yet light without feeling watery or overly bubbly, solidly constructed.

D: Another solid effort form New Belgium and one of the best in my opinion. Drinks far easier than the ABV might indicate, a nice winter time sipper that packs a complex punch.

This beer gave way to a inch tall head that revealed fruit all the way in the aroma. I wanted to serve this one warmer to reveal the complex flavors. What resulted was balanced sweet, fruit flavors with a dry, warm alcohol mouth feel. A touch of licorice and smooth yeast (bread?) is revealed in the midway through my swallow. I would consider this a sipper. The flavors are pretty powerful and need to be enjoyed slowly. I can't believe this came in a sampler at the price that I got it at. Although this is not a "Wow!" beer (though close) and it doesn't demand attention, but I think they did a great job and deserves to be considered Belgian style. Heck its better than some actual Belgian Ales I have had. A must try in my opinion. I gave it such a high overall rating due to the price and lack of any direct competitors at this price level.

Update-- After another year of drinking many different belgians, the flavor profile depth of this beer is where it is clear that this is somewhat of a "imitation". The yeast profile is extremely off, seemingly NB's house yeast. The mouthfeel is too chewing. It has a large amount of bubble gum flavor that I don't remember. The malts taste like a lot came from malt extracts and candy sugar. This is a very good deal still and would be a great first dubbel style beer.

My 2nd bottle, this time I've served it a little warmer.

[Appearance]: Dark amber-bronze color, clear, quite of few bubbles, creamy head, lacing is pretty good.
[Smell]: Dark fruit (plum like), banana, bready, some touch of spice (cloves and a little nutmeg).
[Taste]: Spiced banana up front, some hint of dark fruit, bready from the malt, a little hint of cloves, finish off a little earthliness from the hops.
[Mouthfeel/Finish]: Light-medium bodied, carbonation is fairly weak, finish off slightly dry and crisp, yet very smooth with some alcohol warm.
[Drinkability]: Fairly drinkable.

New Belgium Abbey

pours dark brown/red with a small head that left some lacing, but not much. smells of raisins, spice, alcohol. raisins and dark fruits dominate the taste. thick caramel and sickening sweetness make it difficult to enjoy. creamy and sticky on the palate. quite a strong beer. tasted like a new belgium to me. somehow they all seem to have that same artificial apricot taste. nothing really jumps out of this beer and makes me want to drink it. pretty average across the board for me.
