New Belgium 2012 La Folie Sour Brown Ale, 22 oz. bomber: Sour beers are all the rage these days, and it was time for me to give one a try. Not a cheap endeavor, but hey, you only live once. The risk was that I would really like sour beers, and that would get expensive. This was not the case. The La Folie has a glowing brown body with a reddish tinge if held to the light. The head is pretty thin, but hangs in there. The aroma tells you that this is not your normal beer. Sour apple is the outstanding note. As so it goes with the flavor. Definitely sour, definitely complex. Sour apple and vinegar are some of the notes in the flavor. It’s just SO different. Beers cover a big range from wheats to stouts and IPAs to Belgian styles, but all are recognizable as beer. The La Folie is definitely on the very edge of beer, if not beyond. The sour style is not what I would go for in an after dinner sipping beer. Maybe with certain foods, or a bit before dinner as an appetizer, a sour would work better. That anything like this comes out of a brewery is a testament to the brewer, I am sure a sour is hard to brew. But likewise, I think it will take time to acquire a taste for sour beer, and there are too many great brews to be had.

Served on tap in a 11oz. goblet.

A- Deep garnet with a light toffee head, good degree of clarity.

S- Sour apple, light vinegar, some oak, maybe a bit of spice and vanilla.

T- More sour apple than anything, then some light vinegar, some oak, finishes dry. Not as complex as Le Terrior IMO.

M- Medium a bit more carbonation then I was expecting.

O- A great American version of the style and one of the best beers I've had from New Belgium. Definitely give this one a try.
