Received as part of a trade with sry23. Have been wanting to try this for a while. This is bottle number 4434 of what appears to be a bottling on 7/08.
Dark, opaque brown with light brown head. Intense nose. Vinegar notes, but not as overpowering as some others of the style. Nice. Grape and cherry notes. There is a touch of earthy, grittyness. Taste...well, TART. More so than I had expected. Given the smell, I expected it to be sweeter, but the tartness really dominates. After a few seconds, as the sourness subsides, some of the fruit flavors appear. Sour cherries, tart green apple. Sour aftertaste left on the palate along with a slight woodiness. Very interesting, good balance and complexity. Due to the sourness - did I mention it is tart? - this is not a beer that I would want every day, but consider me a big fan. I had high expectations and I am more than pleased.
