Bottled 11/07
Bottle #11,138

I was lucky enough to get a bottle of this from BitterBill and russpowell, thanks guys! This bottle is from Russ and is the November 2007 bottling. La Folie gurgles from the glass and a fizzy head grows to a finger on a soft pour. The off white head quickly fizzles down to a few isolated islands of foam and a thin collar. The body of this beer is scarlet with a few glowing ruby highlights when backlit. The minimal head does leave behind thin drink lines and the dark body looks fairly clear when backlit.

The nose on this beer is outstandingly complex and inviting. I'm greeted all at once by vinous qualities, mild somewhat buttery oak and red wine vinegar. Each swirl of the glass awakens the head and allows some cherry and melon sweetness that can't quite keep up with the vinegar sourness. Again this beer is so complex and deep that I can't take my nose from the glass. New Belgium needs to make La Folie air fresheners.

The flavor is loaded with complexity as well. The red wine vinegar sourness takes over as soon as this beer hits the tongue but it's not so aggressive that it completely takes over. The vinous qualities flash through again with the cherry adding a touch of sweetness. The buttery oak floats around in back and adds a lot of depth. This has been my simpleminded review of the flavor, there's so much more going on I'm not going to begin to try and explain it all.

The mouthfeel is right where it should be for the style. The body is on the lighter side of the spectrum with a healthy carbonation that gives it that nice airy quick moving feel. The sourness creates a pucker and if given a chance will coat every inch of my mouth. The finish shows a growing dryness.

The drinkability of this Flander's Red is through the roof. The dry sourness keeps me coming back for drink after drink. The funny thing is, for me at least, it's a slow drinker due to the complexity.

La Folie is an outstanding version of the style and although I think Rodenbach Grand Cru is the benchmark I think this beer is slightly deeper. The bottle BitterBill sent is a 2004 so it'll be fun to see the changes. Thanks again guys!
