22oz bottle into a tulip. 2012 vintage.

A: Pours a very dark purplish brown with a small cream-colored head.

S: Soft musty funk, light vinegar and acidic raspberry, sweet brown bread and a little bit of spice.

T: Puckering plum skin tartness over wood-laced roasted malts. Vinous acidity, sour cherry, oak, slight chocolate, caramel. Dry and tart in the finish.

M: Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Nice feel.

O: Probably New Belgium's best beer, and honestly one of the better American sours out there. Very sour, but the base brown ale comes out nicely.

650 mL bottle poured into a taster glass. 2011 bottle. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Burgundy with a small off-white head. Nice patterns of bubbles on the surface.

Smell - Malty smell. Caramely with a cherry tang. Slightly acidic.

Taste - Much nicer cherry tartness in the taste. Creamy caramel malt, but no sweetness. Very creamy. Nice tart finish and a little dry.

Mouthfeel - Creamy wonderfulness. Excellent. Dries out in the finish with a clean sourness.

Overall - Spectacular American sour. Not much aroma, but it tastes great and has a wonderful creamy feel.

Pours very dark red-brown with a dense tan head.

Aroma is sour Brett with a good bit of barnyard funk. Hints of brown sugar. Caramel, toffee, and dark fruit sweetness.

Taste is intense sour dark fruit - cherries and under-ripe plum. There is a good caramel malt backbone with subdued toffee notes that bring sweetness. Finishes with a musty basement and dry cedar quality that lingers.

Mouthfeel is a chewy medium-full.

Overall a very tasty and interesting beer. Flavor is intense, but unified, creating a pleasant experience.

Appearance: Very dark brown that turns maroon when held up to the light. Thin film of light brown head.

Aroma: Sort of like soy sauce. Getting some of the sour notes and dark fruits.

Taste: Tartness engulfs the palate from beginning to end and lingers on the tongue for a while after you've swallowed. Some of the usual brown ale flavors are behind all that sourness and give it some balance.

Mouthfeel: The tartness causes it to be slightly harsh but definitely doesn't keep you from enjoying each sip. Below average drinkability, but that's completely expected given the overwhelming flavor. A little over carbonated but otherwise solid.

Final Thoughts: Finally, an American crafted sour beer that will actually make you pucker your lips. Enjoyed this one.

On tap at Pi on Delmar for SLCBW.

I didn't realize this was a brown ale base. I'm not sure what I was expecting it to look like I guess, but definitely not what I got. Dark caramel-cola brown, some visible bubbles running up it but basically no head to speak of. Nothing special.

Smell is some earthy funk, some oak, granny smith apple, some citrus. Smells really nice. A bit of cherry - actually more cherry than the Kick.

Taste is a lot of acidic tartness upfront. Some apple, funk, hay, cherry, bit of earthiness. Really similar to the nose, but man is it acidic. I felt like I needed to eat a Tums after drinking that. Very tasty, but that acidity is a bit much.

Mouthfeel is excellent. On the lighter side, bubbly carbonation, pretty smooth. Very good.

This is a solid sour, decent complexity and great taste. Great tartness. I just wish it wasn't quite so acidic!

poured from bottle into snifter

A - Reddish copper, low carbonation and a head that dissipates almost immediately.

S - Apple cider vinegar, sour cherries and granny smith apple, oak and a subtle vanilla aroma.

T - Similar if not exactly the same as the nose. Woody and tart. Sour cherries and apple.

M - Produces a small pucker. Acidic with a tart and dry finish.

O - Not a bad offering from New Belgium. Tastes like a dumbed down Rodenbach. Which I guess would make since due to the fact their head brewer helped New Belgium with this project. I have heard that the 2007 vintage of this beer is phenomenal. Overall the 2012 hits me as a decent sour but, there are much better offerings out there when it comes to Flemish red's and brown's.
