Part of the New Belgium Fat Tire & Friends Collaboration -

$14.49 at Bullock’s Wine & Spirits in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a lightly hazed, bronze-hued body with a smallish, coating, white head.

Smell: Lightly bready, biscuity malts with an edge of supple sweetness. A little apple, some citrus fruits. Slender herb, grassy component.

Taste: Toasty biscuit tops with some morsels of sugar cookie sweetness and a scant nuttiness. Light hint of orchard fruit juice stirred up with a bit of citrus. Mild herbal tone, a slight, subtle earthiness. Bitterness is fairly light here. A final nibble of sugar before the semi-dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Soft carbonation.

Overall: A fine effort.

Pours out to a quite cloudy burnt orange with flittering bits of sediment in the glass, forming a limpid head with poor retention and no lacing. Nose of biscuit malt, fruity esters and sour milk. Mouth feel is medium bodied finishing lightly dry. The taste is a bit odd. The biscuit malt is apparent but it's followed by a fruity and metallic note which then goes into a Weird chemical bitterness, some harsh higher alcohols and finishing with woody notes.
I do not care for this one. Much like the sour apple, these odd constellations of flavors do not mix . Another drain pour.

From notes taken 06/05/17:

Mostly clear but fine-hazed lighter copper amber. Head of creamy tan, pillowy fluff, good retention, with horizontal strings of patchy lace. Sweet malt, toast, subtle yeastiness, hint of figs on nose, with mild but unexpected alcoholic burn. Grain and bread-crust palate, in balance with sweet and semi-tart malt notes and a earthy to spicy, not quite leathery hopping, peppery and boozy on retro-olfaction. Metallic, wheat bread-crusty, and boozy aftertaste, although you assume by the body that it will be much cleaner. Medium-bodied, watery, plenty of sharp but otherwise not very active carbonation, mellowing to velvet by finish. Some alcoholic warmth. I am not fond of regular old Fat Tire unless it is served way colder than intended. One of the worst flagships in existence for a brewery of this calibre, even if still drinkable. This is head and shoulders above it, similar to it but better in every way. Hope to see it or similar offerings in the future. Now that I think about it, it is about like an Irish Red Ale, and a good one at that.

A- Dark golden in color. Great clarity. Head is off white and dense. A bit of lacing left behind.

S- Sweet, brown sugar with a little spice. Some bready malt.

T- Subtle Belgian yeast esters. Sweet and spicy. Vanilla with some nice malty bread notes.

M- Medium body. NIce little zip of fine carbonation. Finishes sweet and spicy.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a SA Perfect Pour glass. My sample was rather old, with a nice barleywine-like character. Quite malty, with lots of sweetness on the palate. Bitterness is understated. Clean finish, with a touch of lingering hop spiciness. I don't recommend aging this, but it seems to have held up very nicely.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a copper/orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of fruits, honey. Taste is hoppier than I expected, fruits, oranges stand out, malts, light resin. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a tasty beer that I would buy again.

My New Belgium horizontal that I am conducting as part of the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is beginning to wind down. I was at the FGBS last evening for a New Belgium Etch-a-Glass Night & my sometimes trivia partner, Sister Disco, won a bicycle! I began this home stretch with a revisitation of good ol' Fat Tire Amber Ale to kind of set a baseline as this series is predicated on that beer. The remaining five (5), including this one, are all variations on that theme in collaboration with other breweries, in this case, Rhinegeist Brewery.

From the bottle: "Fat Tire to the X P and A. The innovative Cincinnati folk from Rhinegeist went all new style on Fat Tire. The result is a Belgian-Style XPA. A combination of fruity Belgian yeast, bready-sweet European and Colorado malts an a healthy dose of fruity, vinous hops. Perfect for hop heads, wine lovers, beer fanatics and even whiskey quaffers."

I am SO happy with my etched NB glass! It reads "Bro. Woody drinks New Belgium beer!" & I am getting it seasoned nicely since its creation last night. I Pop!ped the cap & despite it being a fresh bottle, I have begun to embrace a gentle pour followed by an in-glass swirl. Man, did that do the trick! The three fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head reached almost to the top of my glass before it began to slowly subside, leaving great sticky lacing in its wake. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a pronounced breadiness as compared to baseline FT, and the hops were more in my hophead realm, causing my mouth to water. Uncle Pavlov has trained me well! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was quite a departure from FT & was very pleasantly surprised! It had an easily-discerned breadiness, but the yeast & the hops were not quite as easy to parse. I am not totally sold that it had a vinousness, but it was definitely of a mixed fruitiness, not as sweet as Juicyfruit, but along those lines. Maybe it will come to me. The longer that I drank this one, the more that I was totally digging it! I cheated and looked at the BJCP style guide and I will buy pear and a light spiciness, but not pepper. Dang, but this was a really good beer! Finish was semi-dry and I can understand the appeal for all of the factions mentioned on the label with the exception of "whiskey quaffers". I will confess to being a Rye Whisky fan, but this beer does not equate, in my small mind, to whiskey.

12 oz. Bottle

Pours a pretty nice yellow/amber color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/foamy white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, yeasty, spice. The taste is hoppy, malty, yeasty, spicy. Medium body. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.
