2013 Edition

- Pours a deep golden orange.

- Strong hop scent followed by tangerine and grapefruit. At first the nose made me think the beer would be quite hoppy/bitter, but after initial taste the aroma changed more to the fruit-citrus notes.

- Taste is a very interesting mix of a nice citrus fruit sour and an IPA. Citrus Tart flavor up front followed by bitterness from the hops and a creamy mouthfeel. The fruit acidity kicks in to clean the hops away and leaves a dry palate and no lingering of the hops. No huge flavors from the oak barrel and not overly complex.

- Overall an astonishingly good IPA sour with the two styles complementing each other quite well. The citrus sour profile definitely dominates between the two, making this a true sour with IPA undertones to balance it out nicely. Biggest issue with this beer is the lack of complexity, but this also makes it VERY drinkable and palate quenching.

Update: After having this many times over the last 8 months, I need to adjust my scores down a bit. The awesome mango fruit flavor is completely gone along with the hops. Still good, but not quite what it was when fresh. Will still age some and see how it does.

Pours a hazy dark orange color with a two finger head that dissipates slowly and leaves a thick ring of lacing. Decent carbonation. Smells of bretty funk, mustiness, sour cherries, tiny bit of mango, peaches, good amount of lemon, white grape, a tiny bit of sweet breadiness. Taste starts with the dry hop qualities. Get peaches and mango, as well as a tiny bit of grapefruit. Then gets much more tart in the middle, along with notes of lemon, funk and some oak. The finish brings just a tad bit of sweetness, but is just overtaken by the funkiness from the brett, as well as more peach, mango, grapefruit, almost a white grape flavor, cherry, tropical fruit. You can tell the beer has been sitting in oak barrels for a few years, as the oak is very apparent in the finish. Very tart, puckering, acidic finish that lingers on the palate and makes you want to take another sip. Crisp, slightly creamy, and sticky mouthfeel with a medium body. The dry hopping adds a whole new dimension to the beer. Extremely complex sour for a reasonable price. This is hands down the best beer I’ve had by New Belgium so far.

22oz bottle poured into NB Globe glass

A - Light straw, solid head retention and lacing

S - Lemon/lime tartness that stings the nostrils. But it hurts so good. Grapefruit citrus notes peak through as well.

T - Like nothing else. Grapefruit and lime juice tartness with a touch of grass.

M - Light, well carbonated, just a slight touch of stickyness.

O - One of my favorite sours, love the hopped up twist on the style!

22 ounce bottle into snifter

Pours a slightly hazy golden straw color with a small white head that last very long. Smell is citrus, green apples, some hop notes and wild yeast funk. Taste is not super tart. I get some peach, lemon and green apples. Nice funkiness. Hops balance it out nicely. Medium to light body with lighter amount of carbonation. Overall a great beer worth picking up.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a New Belgium Globe glass. 2013 bottle.

Appearance: Pours a deep golden amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head which fades into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A tart, fruity, and yeasty Wild ale aroma with a big kick of citrus hops. Upfront scent of tart and sour cherries along with some funky Brett yeast and hints of wood and oak. Pale malt with hints of wheat, grains, straw, and cracker. Sharp and juicy citrus hop presence with hints of orange, mango, lemon zest, peach, pineapple, and grapefruit. Also some fruit hints of green apples. Also some background hints of earthy hops. A very good aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints at, a tart, fruity, and yeasty Wild taste with a good juicy and bitter presence of hops. Big taste of sour and tart cherries upfront. Notes of funky yeast and Brett along with wood and oak. Pale malt with notes of wheat, grains, cracker, and straw. Fruity taste of tart green apple. Juicy citrus hop presence with notes of mango, orange, lemon zest, peach, grapefruit, and pineapple. Some earthy hop notes towards the finish. A really good sour taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Sour, juicy, and fairly bitter and drying.

Overall: A really great spin on a Wild ale. Great balance of sour and bitter hop flavors.
