A: Reddish brown, dark copper color. Carbonated, head doesn't retain well.

S: Caramel, traces of cocoa and toffee. Very nice smell.

T: What I get most is in the finish, and that's lemon. Very citrus finish that takes over a lot of the flavor of the beer. Some caramel malts up front with hints of toffee and no hop flavors that I can detect. Don't really pick up the espresso flavors, citrus/lemon flavors are quite present.

M: Smooth, slightly thin body. Sticky, oily mouthfeel but pretty smooth.

D: I don't understand the lemon addition to this beer. Would have loved the espresso to pop through, and without the lemon. I love the caramel/toffee flavors but the citrus finish just makes for a weird experience. However, it is an easy to drink beer.

12 oz bottle, best by April 3 2009. Pours a clear reddish amber with a creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is cold coffee and a little toffee and nuts.

The flavor is coffee and roast with some nuts and fruit leading to a slightly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some sharp carbonation.

Overall, it's pretty one dimensional with the coffee notes, but I enjoy it. It's interesting having a lighter coffee beer with some fruit notes.

Pours a brown with some garnet highlights. Nonexistent head but only a wisp of what was.

First aroma for me is sour to tart before coffee bean rises up out of the terroir. Some burnt caramel notes as well.

Mixed bag of ale, malt, coffee grounds and citrus. Medium roast coffee rises first followed by pale hop with a twist of lemon peel. Bordering on bitter sour. Astringent with some acrid bitterness.

Medium mouthfeel yet feels light hearted due to the citrus. Carbonation is flatlining leaving the feel somewhat creamy.

A 4.5 for effort here that wanes among a small gathering. Fun to try at a tasting for something different. This might be fun to try in a red-eye to give the coffee more base. Just reiterating, a 3 on this site is OK. Not horrible, jus not my cup of tea...er coffee. Coffee and lemon belong in the Turkish cup of pure joe in Madagascar.

A ruddy amber colored beer, some fizz but little head.

Smells like my coffee pot when I rinse out the old cold coffee. Good god, yuk!

Very little "beer" (of any style) flavor here. Malt sweetness is absent, just a little cardboardy grainy husky flavor. Hops - none. Interesting yeast derived flavors - none. Coffee flavors dominate, but not in a good full bodied coffee way, more like a watered down leftover coffee way. There is also a slight sourness that reminded me of when I run vinegar through the coffe pot to clean it. Imagine 1 part burnt coffee, 1 part Fat Tire, 1 part water, a drop of distilled vinegar.

Mouthfeel was thin, finish was dry.

Drinkability, none. After a couple back-up sips to confirm my initial perceptions it got dumped.

To their credit, At least NBB is doing some weird stuff. Sometimes they get a pretty good one, but the Giddy Up is just awful as far as I'm concerned!

Appearance - Pours a mud brown color that turns ruby red when held to light. The head is a sandstone color, one finger width and has fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of suds across the surface. The lacing is small and spotty, with fair stick.

Smell - Strong coffee aroma supported with light notes of chocolate, caramel and a hint of lemon.

Taste - No surprises here. Deep coffee character makes up the bulk of the flavor profile, while moderate notes of chocolate and caramel round out the front end. Traces of lemon zest can be found on the tongue in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with fair carbonation. Not much to it, but it's easy to drink.

Overall - A nice coffee infused ale from New Belgium. If they brought this back permanently, I'd probably buy it a few times a year. As is, I'm glad I got to try it as their featured 'Revival' brew.

My new Brother in law gave me a couple of mix-a-sixes from Colorado for my "groomsman gift" (I was one of the ushers), and he thought that this one would pique my curiosity given my penchant for peculiar beers.

A - Deep burnished amber. This is nearly maroon in it's dark red intensity, and the head is a big fluffy three finger affair that shows decent retention after it drops to a thick foamy cap. A quick swirl brings up a full finger of head and leaves a good deal of lace on the glass.

S - Whoa! Now that smells CRAZY! The dominant note is of crushed espresso beans and it's exactly like sticking your nose into a bag of freshly ground dark roast. Also reminds me of those dark chocolate covered espresso beads. Honestly, the smell is wonderfully authentic but woefully one dimensional.

T - Ok. I've been giving this time to sink in after many sips... this one is just too weird. I can definitely taste espresso, but it's as if someone dumped a couple shots into a glass of V8 vegetable juice. I can detect rotten tomato ketchup-y flavors that do not complement the coffee notes in any way shape or form, and the combination of a lemon-y tang, malty sweetness, and bitter dark roast coffee is not good.

M - Medium bodied and foamy, this has a viscosity to it that does not help the vegetable juice flavors. This finishes terribly by leaving a rotten pukey foulness in the mouth with a lingering feeling of foamy thickness.

D - I'm glad that I got the chance to try it, but this is absolutely rot-gut. It's too bad too, since the nose is amazingly authentic and smells more like actual espresso beans than any other beer I've tried. It's pretty too, but those flavors just don't do it for me.

Pours a ruby red-brown with attractive and tall head. Lace is lovely and lattice-like.

Nose is malty and a little roasty. I get plenty of autumnal notes (appropriate as this is part of the Fall 2013 Folly Pack). There's caramel, wet leaves, and a definite touch of coffee.

Taste is sweet and malty, with coffee up front and a hint of citrus (lemongrass) under the palate. I get a cola-type vibe here, as the coffee isn't over-the-top, though it is present and accounted for. Body seems thin. My overall impression, oddly -- flat cola!

Overall, fair enough as an edgy brown ale, but not one I'd revisit.

Appearance: I was extremely shocked…bright orange, very odd for an espresso beer. The closest thing I've seen is Dogfish Head's chocolate beer that is also orange.

Smell: Strong scent of chocolate and espresso. The smells sneak up on you with the color.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Another odd combination that works: espresso and lemon. The coffee is extremely evident and perks you up, but the lemon cleans the palate while still keeping you interested. Light-medium body.

Overall: One of the strangest combinations, but very well-balanced.

Got this in a pack of New Belgiums. Their newest folly! Hah!

A: Pours reddish brown. I had a hard time squeezing a lot of head out of it and it dissipated fast with almost no lacing on the glass.

S: Smells like a coffee shop. I guess that's sort of the point. I am not generally into this sort of thing, but damn, this smells good!

T: The espresso is at the core of this thing. In fact, it's completely overbearing despite the slight lemon and vanilla trying to balance it out. There's not a lot of complexity here, though, there's almost no bite to it, and honestly, it tastes sort of watery, like drinking watered down coffee with a lemon wedge in it. This one is just not doin' it for me. I prefer that my beer tastes like beer.

M: Thin, with a little carbonation that makes up for it. Not impressed.

D: Well, I could definitely pound these without really thinking about it, but I've come to expect more than that from New Belgium brews. Still, it's drinkable as a session beer, but I'd honestly rather just get Pabst or something cheap like that. As far as red ales go, this is nowhere close to something like, say, Cinder Cone, which is miles above this in terms of quality.

I'm pretty disappointed in this one. Maybe I got a bad bottle or something (if the next one is better, I'll be sure to edit this review to reflect that).

On tap at Naja's on 9/3/08.
Looked good. I had no idea what it was but ordered it because I was curious. Dark red, similar to Fat Tire, but slightly darker.
Smelled like strong coffee, maybe some vanilla, kind of hard to get too much of a smell with the two broads smoking right next to us.
Taste was like a cup of weak coffee. Meaning that this was the most coffee I have ever tasted in a beer. It was fantastic the way the malt and coffee jumped back and forth. I was very impressed and shocked. I had no idea it was a coffee beer until that first sip.
Mouthfeel was good. Smooth, very similar to Fat Tire.
The drinkability suffered because the beer just got a bit old after a while. It was so intense with coffee that it almost got a bit obnoxious. Still a very good beer and I would try it again if I ever see it, which may be never.

Served in a glass from the bottle.

A - nice deep amber color. Head dissipates quickly but a thin layer of foam remains. Moderate lacing.

T- lemon and coffee are apparent. Slightly plithy. Weak coffee finish accompanied by slight hippy bitterness.

M - nothing special. Moderate carbonation with very little bubbles.

O - very easy drinker and a fine beer for many occasions. It is a crowd pleaser and didn't stand out to me as anything special.

S - coffee is very apparent and dominates the smell. Its a shame because I did not get that from the taste. It was almost sweet.

Nice mellow nose with light hints of coffee (duh) and maybe a little vanilla. The color is a warm ever so lightly milky amber. Taste is fantastic. Coffee seems to typically be used in porters and stouts and makes for a really rich and warming beer (like Speedway Stout!). This on the other hand has a great balanced body. The espresso taste is prominent but it somehow makes this beer extremely drinkable. It felt like chocolate/coffee milk but far less oily or chewy than normal coffee applications. Definitely more of an early fall session beer. I'm getting some bottles soon and am interested to see how they fare but on tap this one is fantastic!

A 12 oz bottle purchased on Liquid Solutions.

A: The ale pours with a vigorous carbonation. So much so that the glass nearly overflowed when the bottle was still half full. Three plus fingers of head are lacing in a spiderweb patchwork. The ale is an amber brown color.

S: The espresso is especially strong, concentrated and bitter. A faint lemon tartness, very faint, is a counterpunch.

T: I've never had such a strong coffee taste out of such a light (relatively speaking) ale. The espresso is sweet and sharp with a lactic undertone. Lemon is more peel than juice, a perfect compliment to the espresso (although I prefer my espresso with sambuca over lemon peel). A very accessible ale that shows off the espresso in a pleasant manner.

M: The espresso is the best feature of the ale, so if you don't like coffee you've been warned. The hops and amber malts are almost nonexistent.

D: I was expecting to be underwhelmed, based on the feedback-to-date. I am quite happy to report that it exceeded my expectations. The coffee flavor is dominant and I love espresso.

Saturated copper color, good clarity, some rising carbonation visible. Frothy collar of tan foam, spindly lace in the glass. Good surface coverage, creamy surface texture.

Earthy aroma of mild coffee, odd yeastiness.

Coffee is present in the taste, though subdued and mellow. Earthy mellow coffee and light toasted malt. Carbed a little high, it feels frothy across the palate. Overall its fun to try this retro beer, but wasn't all that exciting.

Rich Ruby coloration with a good head when poured into a pint glass. The head reduces to wisps of lacing about the glass. It had a good balance of malt and low hops. There is a distinct expresso taste while sipping it. The only zest comes at the end when it shows the lemon. There is a distinct expresso aftertaste with little hop.

A - Giddy Up! is a dark copper colored beer that has a fleeting off-white head which leaves little lace. It's dark color makes clarity difficult to see but when held up to the light, small carbonation bubbles can be seen fleeing to the surface.

S - Boisterous espresso evaporates into the nostrils with haste, gently balanced by a smooth touch of toffee and slightly overdone toast.

T - Like the aroma suggests, Giddy Up! is big on the espresso but, it's toasted malt base is light, not beefy like, say, a stout, so the lovely coffee flavor is there but not over the top. While lemon peel is devoid in the aroma, sweet lemon bar notes along with a touch of caramel traipse through the background.

M - Giddy Up!'s lighter body lends itself well to the bold flavor of the infused espresso as the dainty carbonation pours over the tongue, drying the palate out for a balanced finish that's neither bitter nor sweet.

O - It's not often you'll find coffee in a beer other than a porter or stout and, on the occasion you might, they can certainly be hit or miss. After all, pairing coffee's bold flavors with something other than the complimentary chocolaty profile of roasted malts can be tough. New Belgium's Giddy Up! pulls off a non-stout coffee beer wonderfully though! Espresso through and through, this lighter bodied, easier drinking toasted amber brew is just the thing to perk you up!

Appearance: A clear and deep rust-colored body with a solid finger of eggshell head. Decent chunky lacing.

Aroma: Roasted malt body with lots of medium-roasted coffee. Not much as far as hops or lemon coming through, but the coffee is brilliant. In a blind smell test, there's an outside chance I'd peg this as coffee, not beer.

Taste: It's still very much all about the coffee in the flavor profile as well. The profile is of mildly bitter coffee flavors firmly in the medium-roasted coffee territory, so don't be expecting a dark-roasted espresso. The backbone is somewhat reminiscent of 1554 (although much weaker) and nicely sweet. There might be a splash of citrus in there, but it's hard to pin down.

Mouthfeel: A smooth, medium body with average carbonation.

Drinkability: Moderate drinkability. The coffee might get somewhat tiring after a while.

Verdict: Giddy Up is somewhat one-dimensional beer, but it does what it does perfectly, having the best recreation of coffee flavors I've ever experienced in a beer. If you're looking for medium-roasted coffee flavors in a beer, you can't go wrong here. It works perfectly as part of a mix-pack, but I'm not convinced I'd be picking up a lot of six-packs.

A: Pours a clear orange-amber color with moderate carbonation producing a fairly thick 3 cm head.
S: Interesting lemon espresso with citrus hops.
T: Espresso hits first, then the lemon citrus hops start to come through and balance it out. I like the experimentation!
M: Nice--typically smooth NBB feel.
D: A nice surprise from NBB. Interesting enough to make you take your time, yet light enough for good sessionability. A good offering from NBB.

A - Pours up a clear amber with a dense off-white head that dissipates slowly to a thin cap on top of the beer.

S - The aroma if all coffee. And I mean that in a good way. It's a smooth aroma, not roasty, but earthy.

T- Slightly sweet malt starts off, but the coffee flavor fills my mouth. Again, it's not a roasty bitter flavor, but an earthy, chocolatey flavor.

M - Medium bodied with a light carbonation tingle

D - A very easy drinking beer. I really like it.

Double Tree Hotel in San Jose California. Served in a New Belgium over-sized wine glass.

What we have here is a clear deep red colored ale with a small tan head.

Smell is strongly of malt and fresh ground coffee beans. Fainter scents of smoke and vanilla.

The taste starts out strongly of espresso beans fresh roasted and sweet chocolate and vanilla. Easy to describe the flavor of this. This tastes exactly like a chocolate covered espresso beans. After awhile a distinct orange aftertaste develops, rather nice.

Mouthfeel is on the light side.

Verdict is a very tasty and drinkable beer. To enjoy this beer though it is pretty much mandatory to like coffee.

Had this one on tap at The Ginger Man....

pours up a red amber color with a decent off white head. decent lacing. the nose is sweet malts, coffee bean and brewed coffee aromas. the taste is espresso, coffee bean, vanilla, full bodied, medium carbo. I didn't really detect any lemon flavors or aromas but New Belgium holds a solid place in my book when they release good brews like this.

Pours ruby brown with a thin to wispy off-white head. Trailing lace drapes down the glass.

The smell is of lemon, floral notes, mint, spiced bread, roasted coffee.

The taste is of medium, approaching dark, malt (dark toffee), roasted mild coffee, hint of tangy lemon. Spicy, dry-ish finish.

It is smooth, effervescent/spritzy, but not fizzy. It leaves a fresh, pleasant aftertaste.

This is a unique beer - blends a malty character with coffee and lemon, without the porter/stout character - more towards amber ale (as it is categorized). Didn't know by the description if it would work, but it sure does!

Poured into snifter.

A Dark mahogany. No transparency. Thick lingering tan head and lacing down the glass.

S Fresh cut grass. Zesty, citric aroma. Coffee. Hint of burnt malt, pepper, and hops.

T Very forward with the coffee. Sweet toffee and followed by a lemony tartness.

M Medium. A bit chewy with some fizzy carbonation. Easy finish.

O Good coffee beer. Unique. The coffee and lemon go quite well together. The flavor is layered and complex. My only complaint is that the lemon overpowers any hoppy bitterness that may be there. All in all very good brew.

Pours a copper brown color with a soapy off white head.

Smells of coffee and cream with a hint of lemon and some sweet malty aromas.

Up front the taste is bitter with coffee grinds, followed by a smooth caramel malt flavor with just a hint of lemon on the finish.

It's kind of light bodied with moderate carbonation and a crisp finish.

Overall it's a good beer. Interesting take on a coffee beer that I really enjoyed.
