Notes/Commercial Description:
In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek - a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries.

This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon's brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boon's offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium's Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert. After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek.

The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish. Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly.

Purchased August 2010

A - Pours a mostly clear red/amber with one finger of white head. Head has pretty good retention and leaves some lacing before fading to a persistent collar.

S - Cherries dominate the aroma, with a nice tartness. Also some funky. Cherry aroma seems a bit dirty, for lack of a better term. Not bad, but not too exciting.

T - Taste starts with a punch of tartness, with cherry flavor gradually coming through. The tartness is followed by a decent funk and a surprising bread malt taste. Has the elements of a good kriek, but both the tartness and funkiness just seem a bit off.

M - Medium mouthfeel is dry and a bit earthy.

O - I didn't have any problems finishing this, but I never thought of it as a very good kriek either. Wouldn't but again.

A: Cloudy, beautiful red with a brownish hue. White head. Little lace and retention.

S: Sorta funky & sour, but in a juice kind of way.

T: Again, slight cherry juice. Nothing special. Disappointing.

M: Sweet and good but no body or character.

O: Like a sour cherry lollipop and sugary water. Meh.

Poured a deep crimson red in color with a pinkish colored head that left a little lacing sticking to the glass. I had hints of cherries upfront almost like it was cherry juice, slight acidic notes, some citrusy qualities and a little vinegary as well. The cherry character was more apparent on the palate alongside vinegary, oaky, and tart accents. The brew was medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a sweet, fruity, and tart finish. It was pretty good beer but would not get more due to the stiff price tag.

I don't know when this was bottled. Was sitting on a back shelf back in a random bottleshop for who knows how long.

A - This poured maybe a finger of light pink head which quickly falls to a trace. Body is more of an indian red in color. Slightly cloudy.

S - Quite delicious. Not a full lambic/kriek scent, but some good sour raspberry. No funk at all.

T - It is a sour, but not very fruity. More bitter sour. Some funky grapefruit rind.

M - Fairly light body and strong carbonation. Pretty good all around.

O - A decent job. It may be a little past its prime. No fruit flavors and a more bitter than sour, but still pretty good.

A - Pours a cloudy ruby red color with a finger of frothy white head atop. The head fades down fairly quickly leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of some cherries with some light farmhouse funk and a bit of malt.

T - Starts off with some cherry flavor with some tartness and sourness. Through the middle some funk comes through with a bit malt. The finish is a mix of more cherry flavor, sourness, and some light pale malts.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sour, sweet, and dry finish.

D - Very drinkable. The cherry flavor is nice and strong from start to end. The beer could have used a bit more depth, it had a nice delicate flavor to it.

Clear ruby and red with a moderately sized light pink head that leaves webs of lace down the glass.

Sweet aroma predominantly of cherries, though the aroma is somewhat medicinal and artificial in nature. Not bad per se, but not good, either.

The flavor too is quite average. The cherry flavor doesn't seem particularly authentic or vibrant, though it is there. There's also a bit of freshly baked bread and mild bitterness.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A boring kriek, though not at all bad.

Pours a dull red, a slight pink head on it, I'd venture to say around 5/16" of an inch, sticky on the edge of the glass. Aroma didn't impart the tangy sour cherry I was looking for. I dunno, maybe its because they're Polish cherries, they haven't figured it out or something.

The cherry is a little more noticeable in the taste, the tartness is respectable, but not like the greats. I don't really pick up much in the way of wood/oak on this or the other counterparts like vanilla and whatnot. Body hides the alcohol decently. Sugar in the mouthfeel is just too high.

Had really high hopes for this beer, but at $15 a bottle, it is nothing but disappointment. How is it the most expensive lips of faith beer is also one of the worst?

Pours maraschino cherry red, very intensive yet sparkling clear. Forms ahuge off white, Valentine's Day pink tinged fizzy head of 3 fingers that reduces to a sparse cap. Rocky lacing on the glass with a good stick.

Thin pale malts with considerable alcohol at first as tart cherry and a bit of woodsy barnyard creep in and ultimately dominate the aroma. Kind of simple but funky is always interesting.

Pale malt, slight cereal and bready character keep this together as juicy cherries fill the palate. But that's as far as the complexities go, finishes with a dull flash of sour on the back of the palate with a bit of yeast as well. Tartness makes the mouth water.

Thin body, very drinkable and prickly carbonation. Not getting the full impact of the sour or the cherries, overall more yeasty and dulled that I would like. Drinking colder makes the beer brighten up considerably.

Just getting my feet wet in the world of lambic and fruit beers. This offering is a bit simple and a good starter, not very intense. In short, a thin blonde ale with tart cherries. Not a good value at $15 for the bomber.
