Appearance: Medium golden in color with a touch ofg haze, crowned by a massive, dense snow-white cloud-top head. The glass walls are adorned with Belgian lacing. Numerous streams of minute bubbles drift lazily to the surface.
Aroma: Citric and pine hops dominate the aroma with a mildly spicy undercurrent. The aroma inspires a sense of anticipation.
Taste: Opens with a burst of complex hop flavors, bitter, spice, pine, and citric, tending toward grapefruit rind. Beneath the hops is a wave of lightly toasted pale malt. The rye malt contributes a slight spiciness as well, as well as a slight bread crust note. Towards the finish, the hops really shine, with a flourish of grapefruit and spices. Finishes with a lingering, mild bitterness.
Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and very pleasant.
Drinkability/notes: A stellar example of the style and one which greatly exceeded my expectations. Well done, New Belgium.
Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce custom brown glass long neck bottle, served in a Samuel Adams Boston Lager "sensory" glass.
Serving type: bottle
