I've tried a number of New Belgium beers, and I've visited the brewery, but I've never been a convert. They're good beers, to be sure (although Fat Tire is overrated), but I'm not as big a fan of most of their stuff as lots of people I've met are. That said, I like the Ranger IPA.
The Ranger pours a nice golden yellow color with a frothy two finger head. Very nice lace as the beer recedes. The nose is nice enough, with a noticeable hop presence with some grapefruit citrus smell, but it's not as pronounced as I would like. Taste is solid, though, for an American IPA. Fruity up front with an immediate kick of hoppy bitterness. The hops linger up front, though, and the beer finishes clean. There's a lingering funk to the bitterness, as well. But it doesn't detract from the overall flavor.
I like this beer. It's not my favorite American craft IPA, but I could certainly do worse than the Ranger from my selection of beers down here in the Rio Grande Valley. I've had this many times and foresee myself drinking more of it in the future.
